Learn how to create THE BEST answer to "walk me through your resume" or "tell me about yourself that will impress your interviewers!
"Tell me about yourself" is the same question as "Walk me through your resume". This question is sometimes overlooked and it's actually a very important part of your interview. Moreover, the story you create to answer this question can serve as an introduction for a coffee chat, a networking event or a phone call with a recruiter.

How to structure Tell me about yourself or Walk me through your resume?
Introduction:
* The introduction is just a brief mention of who you are, where are you from and what did you study in college and why. And think that this "why did you study whatever you studied in college" as the beginning of a chain of decisions that leads to you being interested in, for example, the Tech industry.
Your Job or Jobs
* Start with a brief description of your job and the company you worked for. Don't describe your job, but rather highlight the skills that you learned, any promotions you got and WHY did you transitioned to your next role (or project).
* Your whole story is building up to a point where your experiences, your skills and the transitions you made are all connected to the job you are applying to. So when you think of what skills you learned in your different jobs, connect them to the job you are interviewing for.
* You can also mention a very successful project or accomplishment at any of your roles to serve as a teaser and invite the interviewer to ask you more questions about it.
* Transitions from one job, or a project, to next are about new things that you wanted to learn and realizing that you needed more experience on things related to the Job you want today. Remember that if you are a student, you can show how you transitioned from one project to the next or even to an internship and how all your story is building up to the job you are interviewing for.
Closing your introduction:
* There are different approaches that you can take to close your "Tell me about yourself" or "walk me through your resume" - but the constant thing is to be confident of your approach. The interview is also a dialogue, so make sure that you read your interviewer's expressions - if they want to ask you questions, pause and let them talk.
* At the end of your interview you can, for example:
- Finish your story and let the interviewer ask their next question:
- " And now, after all this experience I'm really excited to be here and happy to answer any questions you have"
* You can also lead the conversation and start getting into questions like "Why Product Management" (or the role you are applying to)
- " And this latest experience led me to believe that Product Management is the next step for me. Here are a few reasons why:…"
* Or you can also answer the question of "Why this company?"
- " And after I had the opportunity to speak with Diego about Microsoft, I'm really excited to be interviewing with you today. In fact, here are a few reasons why I believe that Microsoft is a fantastic place to work:…."

Now I know the best way to answer the "Tell me about yourself" or "Walk me through your resume". As product managers, we need to structure everything we do. After this kind of answer, recruiters will start to know our skills are related to product management.

Hey Diego, can I just say the example your provided with the visual prop ( slide ) is the best I have seen so far? I have been working in product space for many years now and this is the first video where I could see simplicity backed with powerful words to define oneself for a PM role. Amazing!

I was interviewing at a large well-known company and got this question. I started off talking about my degree, then experiences and products I shipped. After the question the interviewer was very aggravated. Their response was "It really shows your priorities that you would mention your degree before talking about actual PM experience. Of course you have a degree. Everyone I have interviewed has a degree. Who cares, you should have told me what you built". They also said university should be one of the last items on the CV. The interview ended after only 15m into a 1h time allotment. Did I dodge a bullet with a crazy interviewer/potential boss, or should one be more careful putting their degree upfront instead of metrics and products?

Wow, that’s a crazy thing! Imagine being completely disqualified because you mentioned your degree at the beginning… imo you dodged a very toxic environment

That’s a good question. In the end, this answer should be concise and to the point - it has to be tailored to the role you are interviewing for so some parts of the experience can be summarized if they don’t directly have a lot of relevance to the role. for example: “.... the next 5 years, at worked at X, Y & Z companies where I learned about (skill 1)& (skill 2). In my next role I....” and continue with the story. You want to make sure your story is as related as possible to the role you are interviewing for

Thank you! This was helpful! However, out of the overall experience, if 7 years was into engineering and 3 years was into product management. Does one need to start talking about engineering first and then talk about transitioning to PM?

Yes! Start by talking about your experience in engineering and all the skills that you learned that are TRANSFERRABLE into PM :) Don’t focus just on the technical skills - focus on how your 7 years of experience in eng prepared you for a PM role. I think 5 minutes is too much, max 1- 2 minutes is what I think, interviewer loose the track and get bored in 3-4 minutes

Well, we are able to listen to audiobooks and watch movies for hours. If someone gets bored after 3 minutes of listening to someone’s story the problem is not the time, it’s the story 😉 5 minutes is, in my opinion, a hard max limit simply because an interview will consist of many questions. Remember, it’s not about time - it’s about how you craft your story ✌️
Does anyone else think these answers are very bland and all sound the same as what everyone else is saying? I would be very bored hearing these responses.
