Wow, thanks!
Out of all the "adjust pushrod" videos I watched, yours was the icing on the cake. I did exactly as you instructed, ignored such things as TDC, and had no knowledge of my brand names to use any such calculator charts (flats info etc), and now my bike runs perfectly after a complete rebuild! I cannot thank you enough for solving what I believed was a mysterious pain in the ass problem with no solution in sight. THANKS!!!

Wow, the best explanation on simplifying it for everyone. Every video you got on KZread of this exact same install these guys are taking about lash and thousandths and adjusting to gap spaces and bla bla bla. But you have made it understandable for any gearhead and I can not appreciate that anymore. Going to save my self almost $400-$500 in labor for a cam swap

I’m adjusting push rods now after having top end rebuilt. I find TDC on the compression stroke by watching the lifters and feeling compression in the cylinder. Then check with by inserting a straw in the cylinder to make sure. Then adjust as you show. Thanks for making this video.

paper clip and a rubber band to hold covers up. also when cam lobes are down 'base circle' piston is up on TDCC. top dead center compression. so you did it correctly and had it on TDCC :)
This is a awesome video great explanation and greatly appreciated. I am confused as to why once you have adjusted it to no slack and go through your “3” turns and lock everything down how does it become loose again? How do you know how many turns you need?

Hey Great explanation...procedure is explained very well...one pointer I would add.. on the cylinder you are adjusting the pushrods on, it is absolutely ok to do intake and exhaust, then wait the 10 -15 minutes just once per cylinder... Be Safe. Don HD PHD MASTER TECH..

Hey Don, on my 99 sportster 1200 I've got oil blowing out the trans vent tube all over my back tire, not good. can you tell me what it could be?
I did mine and the pushrods would turn easily right as soon as I finished. I squirted oil in the oil hole til it came out the top of the lifter. Still they would turn easily. Did I do something wrong or you think it just bled down before I could get the pushrod tight?
That's about the same principle I use on the old Chevy engine, or most for that matter. Thanks
@fixingorflipping

Thanks for watching!
Ok so what happens if when they bleed down you still can't free spin them? Just back them off a little more til they free spin? I'm still unclear on this and I'm going to install a 1275 kit with SE heads on my Sportster. So please reply. Thanks.
@HRMartin-ud1gf
16 күн бұрын
If they don't bleed down to the point where you can spin the rods with your fingers, you most likely turned more flats than is required for your specific push rods. Check your threads per inch and correct accordingly. S&S quickie push rods are 4 turns (or 24 flats) for example. Other brands may only require 3 turns, (18 flats).
Thanks! Simple easy explanation! That's a good video!

So I have a softail evo here and I want to adjust the pushrods. The bike is noisy right now so I am sure it needs to be adjusted. My question is. With them all ready pre adjusted in the bike. Do I just get the cam to poition, and then adjust them to slight lash?
@fixingorflipping
2 ай бұрын
I would totally back them off and start over with the adjustment process. Usually once pushrods have been adjusted correctly, they don’t require re-adjustment. So if the bike was quiet and then over time got noisy,, you could have a bad lifter.
I can dig it.
Thanks for posting this but get 4 paper clips and big rubber bands or small bungee cords and pull the push rod covers up out of the way.
Where did the three turn figure come from? I have unknown type ( to me) adjustable rods in my engine and am trying to figure what proper adjustment is.

Can you do both rods on each cylinder at the same time, if not why?
@fixingorflipping
Жыл бұрын
Hello, no you can’t. While one cylinder is on the base circle of the cam, the other is not. They will never be on the lowest point of the cam at the same time. Thanks!
Get your self a holly carb return spring for throttle Linkage from are car ,been doing this for 35 years
Frt intake up ,adjust rear intake, frt exh up, adjust rear exhaust. Do same for front cylinder rears up ! Simple!
Can you give me your definition of "over lap?" Does it mean the same thing as "base circle of the cam?" I know you said that in your procedure, you do not get involved in determining tdc, but just for my edification, when the cam (twin cam) for whatever cylinder you are working on is on overlap, does that indicate that the cylinder is on tdc?
@fixingorflipping
Жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct. When the tappets on a cylinder are NOT moving up/down, it is because that is the “base circle” of the cam.
@jhoytmaddox
Жыл бұрын
@@fixingorflipping appreciate the video. but.... valve overlap is when both valves are open (and so would both be moving). Overlap allows the the escape velocity of the exhaust gasses to aid in the intake of fresh fuel and air. So... one cylinder is experiencing overlap and the one you're adjusting is on the base circle.
@cindysullivan4265
9 ай бұрын
Hi All, valve overlap is when both intake and exhaust valves are briefly both open...as exhaust gases exit, intake gets a little boost via low/ high pressure difference.. as intake stroke progresses vaporization of fuel droplets gets enhanced.. Be Safe Don

@fixingorflipping

It depends on the tpi of your brand.
@rchdist
Жыл бұрын
correct, if it is a 6 sided nut, 3 turns from mark to mark is 18 flats
My whole problem is that I bought a bike with unknown aftermarket pushrods lol. I'm thinking just bottom them out and back them off halfway.
@fixingorflipping
Жыл бұрын
You should start by measuring your pushrods TPI (threads per inch) so that you know what you’re working with and then can find out how many flats, turns, etc. you will need for adjustment. You need to literally count the number of threads there are in 1 inch of the threaded part of one of your pushrods.
This is a great vid on setting adjustables but again- I have to ask- WHY are adjustable rods in the bike in the first place? You're introducing 4 more points of failure in a Harley engine- as there isn't enough already. For what?? ... so you can save an hour and a half labor?? How often are you in there to justify cutting rods? People- think. You're eventually going to have to go upstairs anyway, valve seals don't last forever, breathers on twincams DO need to be changed. Unless you're running solid lifters - which if you are, that's a whole new convo; then just say NO to adjustables. As I stated in the beginning, IF you are going to install adjustables- THIS is the vid to watch.
