Hi Sean, does GA4 able to attribute to original referrer e.g. Google Ads just by adding referral exclusion? As old UA it doesn't and just goes to direct traffic thanks

Hi there, thanks; it's an interesting and contested question! In our experience with UA and GA4, this solves the problem. However, like you say, some people have issues with third-party sites then appearing as "direct". Even in the UA documentation from Google it's not 100% clear... in the GA4 documentation, there is currently limited information. It's best just to test the referral exclusions with your own site and see what happens. Each site will have it's own unique user journey which determines how your GA will measure a session start. hi! I dont have the little pencil in the right corner in order to modify/ add thindgs - although I am an administrator. Have you encountered this situation ?

I think GA4 has changed the interface slightly so you may not need to actually click the "edit" pencil icon anymore and instead can add your domain straight away.

Hello Sean and team, I've followed all these steps - will GA4 eventually clear any historical data that had unwanted referrals? Or it only applies to future data collected?

Hi Guilherme, thanks for your comment. Good question. In general, Google Analytics will not be retrospective, or it will not show the changes you made on your historical data ONLY on your future data. So in this case, GA4 will only start excluding the referrals from the time you add the exclusions. Hope that helps!

​@@Guilopes99 It would probably be better to create a filter to exclude that referral source from your historical data and then build a report with that filter assigned.

@@VixenDigital I thought filters like UA weren't possible with GA4, and since the unwanted referrals (checkout payment site) preceded the conversion, I don't want to clear those conversions

@@Guilopes99 Ah yes, if UA then filters is probably the way to go. If GA4 then you may have some luck using the "explore" tab and building a custom report.
