How To Add a Rim Lock to Your Adventure & Dual Sport Motorcycle

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Many dual sport and adventure motorcycles don't come equipped with rim locks from the factory, but adding one to your bike can have many benefits and offer piece of mind while riding. Rim locks help ensure the tire doesn't spin on the wheel by pinching the rim and tire together. In this video Charles gives a closer look at the benefits of adding a rim lock to your motorcycle and how to properly install one on your dual sport and adv motorcycles.

You should put the rim strap over the rim lock as shown unless you have a rim strap which has an extra hole at the right place for the rim lock. Some advocate using duct tape or the tape which comes with TuBliss. Tape goes under the rim lock. Wheel weight set screws need to clamp on the spoke nipple. A set screw gripping the spoke will create a dimple where your spoke will break when sufficiently stressed. We all break a spoke eventually, there is no point in doing it sooner than later. Factory rim locks are almost never installed directly opposite of the valve stem. There is a repeating pattern every 4 spokes and most wheels will be 36 spokes. The valve stem is located between 2 spokes angled away from each other, this repeats every 4, half way around is 18 where the spokes cross each other making it harder to put a wrench on the rim lock. Another comment made a good point: Put the rim lock 4 spokes either side of the valve stem. This way you only have to treat one side of the wheel special when putting the tire on/off. If you are going to balance the wheel anyway then "Wo what? Its no more than 1/2 oz." But if you were to install 2 rim locks this is what you would do, the first (4) spokes from the valve stem, the next (16) spokes around, and then the valve stem is another (16) spokes continuing around the wheel. The method of mounting the tire, mostly skipped, works but is not my favorite. Go find the TuBliss installation video. Basically put the innertube in your tire. Spread the tire beads at the valve stem then insert the entire wheel into the tire over the valve stem. So now the entire wheel is floating inside the tire with tire beads outside but you have the dreaded valve stem threaded through the rim. Now you lever the bead over the rim from one side, then flip the wheel and lever the bead over the other rim rather than putting both beads over from the same side. This way you don't have to pull the tire over the rim lock then place the bead between the rim lock and far rim. And makes things a million times easier if installing 2 rim locks.

Place the lock 1dm / 4 inches(?) to either side of the valve-stem instead. Makes it a ton easier when changing tires!!!

@ The 3:58 mark in the video, you are showing the rubber band liner OVER the Rim Lock. Is this the way you leave it? You don't poke the Rim Lock stem through the rubber band?

There should be a stamp marked on the side of your rim indicating the rim size. Example: 18 x 2.15 in which case you would use a 2.15" rim lock. Hope that helps!

Thank you for this. Isn't there something made to place inside the rim under the valve to balance the weight of the rim lock?

I got my first bike in 22 and it did not have rim lock nor had I ever heard of it. In less than a year my rear valve stem ripped off twice while riding on the freeway at 80mph I wish I had known this earlier

I have a 2016 Africa Twin in my arsenal. I see that a rim lock is available for the front- 2.15, but nothing for the rear - 4.00. Any suggestions?

You should be running the rear tire on that AT at 36-41 psi, so no rim lock required. Rim locks are good for low pressures like around 15 psi or less.

Rim Lock is ONLY needed if you plan to run 15psi or less!!......which is for off-roading pressures..... If you're running on the street, generally you run 20psi or More.....so no need for Rim Lock, as there's really No risk of ripping a rube....... Generally it's a good rule of thumb to run a Lock anyways, just in case you're riding down the road and see a nice Trail, and decide to check it out, and if the terrain gets rough, at least you can air-down to take full advantage, also if the trail starts to get Bad and you're at risk of getting stuck, at least you can air down for increased traction!
