Музыка
Part 1 (of 2) In this week's guitar lesson, you'll learn how to play the major scale in 5 positions up the neck of the guitar (using the CAGED System). This is the first part of the 2 part lesson on understanding how to use MODES on guitar.

I'm with you guys. This dude is chill. Just found this channel and the Professor is in .
Brian, I just love how you teach a song and explain what we're playing. Your always say, "First I'll show you how to play it, then I'll explain." Then your show EXACTLY how to play something, taking your time to explain any new techniques. Then your say, "Now, what is that?!" (I love the way you say it, like "What the heck is that?!") Then you explain what the notes are, where they're from. That's the part that other people leave out! So there's no understanding of what we're playing, no way to link it together! Now, we may be able to simply memorize the notes and then play them, but we're not learning anything. I've been noticing how I've learned so much about theory, scales, everything... Just by watching your lessons every week (and practicing--can't leave that out!) Case in point: I've always had a hard time justifying "learning scales." So I never did. Oh, I could play all kinds of songs. But I didn't know anything. But after watching you, one day I just sat down and learned how to play the major scale. Simple. Then, today I learned the patterns to play the major scales in each of the CAGED positions. No sweat. That's incredible! It went so easily, no sweating it out, no "Ok, today I'm going to practice my scales, yuk." It just went so easily! Keep up the EXCELLENT job you're doing! 💪
Great tutor, don't understand most of it still, in relation to to the neck, as there are so many options, but will stick with this dude, as he's not showing off at all, he just knows, and if you know, you know, you know !
Good Morning Brian... Yes, it's not about a tour of "tools" at the musical hardware store. It's about "how" to use these "Modal" hand tools. I teach photography in a similar manner. It is a great joy when the light bulb lights up in the students mind. It's not about us as teachers, it's about bringing the student across the "bridge of knowledge". "Unconscious" playing comes from the soul and not the head. Don't just show them the fishing gear, teach them HOW to fish! Well Done Sir. SUBSCRIBED.. I too appreciate a selfless teacher.
I have been a member for nearly five years now. Highly recommended by the way. Sometimes the lessons can be a bit similar which is inevitable over such a long period of time but it is lovely to see something new and different. I understand the modes but I know Brian will cement and improve that understanding and make it more musical.

Chris JS thanks for 5 years Chris!
I have taken almost 3 years of guitar theory under 2 good guitar teachers and have never had using modes explained in this way. Very well done.
Found your channel today, and watched roughly about an hour of your content and it really drove home things I've been working on. You're a tremendous teacher.

He's on fire last few songs, I just signed up a month ago and learning a ton, even though I knew quite a bit, good teacher though
Love your Lessons, always valuable and pertinent information that actually help the struggling Guitarist! Thumbs Up Dude!
I've been playing guitar for quite a long time but had to take a break for a while due to life. Now I'm retired and have been working on regaining my chops. Your modes lesson is fantastic. I hadn't really put too much thought into the modal aspect, and I had no idea how much I actually know. Thanks for a few "light bulb" moments! I actually meant to post this under Part 2 modes.
Next time someone asks what I would like to do on guitar, I’m sending them the link to this video. 🙏🏻
You are the ultimate guitar guru!!! Thank you for everything!!!
Your lessons are extremely helpful. Love your style - tasteful, soulful and I love how you leave space to savor the notes. Thanks
You’re a excellent instructor and communicator.
Hello Friend, I just became a paid member and I love learning from you. I have to say that I really like your New studio set up. Thanks
Wonderful lesson love the way those notes ring out. Wow I'm feeling so chilled right now!
Love the RCA Dalmatian in the background! The lesson as well! 👍
As always--easy to follow and great lesson Brian...
Thanks for making lessons that are so good and easy to follow through and atlist understand.
Thanks for the great video. Finally I am clear about modes. It has been bugging me for ages. :-)
Great lesson and the website has so much great stuff for learning and improving. Thanks Brian
Absolutely fantastic Brian
Thank you Brian. An epiphany for me.
That is a lovely piece of music.
This guy is awesome! I always knew the modes but never figured out how to use them!
Another guitar topic I needed a lesson on. Brian reads minds...
This is great. I always trust you, Brian. Whenever things get even just a little bit muddy, I know you'll always bring it around so everyone understands what you're trying to teach. Every time. This has got to be the quickest, easiest to understand explanation of modes that I have EVER heard. It's such a simple concept, I can't believe I've wasted all that time listening to other people explain, "and in this one, you sharp this and flatten that...". Just trying to remember the names of the modes was hard enough, now I know 3 of 7 without even trying! Thanks, dude! 👍 Oh yeah, and I can play them, easily! It's just a matter of where your start! (I think! --that's right, isn't it?!)
Another great lesson. Thank you.
The first thing i thought when hearing your sound was Bill Frisell, very calming yet intriguing
Another useful and unexpected lesson! Reminds me of a driving car down a road in some noir type movie. Very cool
Love the lesson! I hear The Kinks Misfits at the beginning.
Best lessons ever
Sure wish I'd learned this forty years ago. My guitar road would've been a lot less rocky. Thanks! P.S.- I recommend the AM premium membership. Brian's a really good teacher. Free plug.
The modes have always confused me so I'm glad you have come up with this mini-series, Brian! Coincidentally, I have just been into the major scale - you have mentioned it so many times in the lessons that I thought it was time to finally figure out the Do Re Mi Fa Sol La thing. You make learning stuff FUN :)

I love this lesson. So helpful and it pushed me to join your patron. You mentioned you used the Kemper for your tone. How are you amplifying your Kemper? If you don't mind sharing.
Cool and nice 👍 Everything you teach is clear and clean, but the one thing I always get stuck is with the rhythm part... it is very difficult to comprehend at least for me... Any help or advise will be highly appreciated.
The backing track song reminds me of Ballerina from Van Morrison (Astral Weeks)
Thanks are you recording direct from kemper in this video ? what profile you are using ?
You lulled my and I wife to sleep. Lol
Moody modes👍🎸🇨🇦
awesome lesson as always! many thanks! ... do we use chord voicing with the 4th chord when we mix rhythm and lead together?.or is there another strategic way to do it?.......and thank you very much! you rock !

@@activemelody sorry for that ... I'm a big fan of ur music and the way you mix lead and rhythm under the title ( play blues by yourself). I also was a member on active melody for sometime. one thing confused me ,when I try to mix lead and rhythm, is the order of the following( the base line or the groove, the chord voicing are used based on caged, and the licks in between). so my question is there a specific order when u put all this together ?? ....sorry for the long writing English is not my first language.Thank u so much for ur help!

@@mateos4685 not really a formula per se, i usually just start with a melody, and then try to work chords around that.
And yet, six dickheads who think they can do better still gave this a thumbs down. Keyboard warriors strike again. Keep going Brian. You make this world in guitar a better place.
There are a lot of guitarists on the web that can show you how to play, but I found no one can TEACH you how to play like Brian does. (Paid member)

So all of the notes remain from G Major but you start from the C note if playing C Lydian or the Whole step, W, Half Step, W, W, W, H sequence begins on that C note? I’m thinking the notes stay the same just a different starting point?
@activemelody
3 жыл бұрын
EatAtTheDanglingDiner yes, the notes stay the same - it’s all just the G major scale in this lesson. I’ll break down the mode thing next week I’m better detail
@craighaggart
3 жыл бұрын
That's right - you still play just the notes of the G Major scale. When you play those same notes but start on C, it becomes "C Lydian mode" and the intervals from that point (the C note) are W W W H W W H. If you started on C and instead played the major interval series (W W H W W W H), it would simply be the C Major scale. Hope this makes sense! There is a nice chart on wikipedia that shows the mode intervals, making it very easy to see that each mode simply starts at a different point in the same sequence of intervals: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mode_(music)#/media/File:Modal_Interval_Sequence.png
Ho, do you have some TIPS fpr a person Who Is blind?! 1 how tò move free on the fretboard 2 how can I feel wher Is the note whithout see It?!
I’m more confused than I was before I watched this video. Why do you have to play the Major Scale in those different positions? And why do all seven notes work for this song when usually you only pick five notes from one of the pentatonic scales?
You're not sharpening the 4th of the G Major Scale; the 4th is sharpened because the tonal center changed to C Major. By definition it is sharpened through that concept, but you haven't actually changed any notes from the original G Major Scale, correct?
“Don’t give me the thumbs down” 🤣 Never gonna happen.

Did anyone else hear part of the Reading Rainbow theme?
...so if you play in the key of the song (not the key of the current chord) and the chord changes like from I to IV to V or any other in the key you automatically play modally, lydian an mixolydian in this case, right?
@activemelody
3 жыл бұрын
Michał Wiechowski yes, but you aren’t really in control that way, the chords are in control and dictating it. The goal is for you to decide which mode you want to use and at what point.
I'll have to hang on for more lessons. It always kills my brain when someone says, "I'm in G major playing C Lydian with that sharp note." My brain says that it's not G any more. I'll be back.

James Duffy don’t worry about that for this week. Just play the G major scale - that’s all this weeks lesson is
Wish there was an easy way to get there...
That's a great lesson, can't wait for the second part! While studying the positions for G major in CAGED, I came up with a simple melody that sounds to me a lot like a medieval song. All I know is that it must be E minor, but what does it make sound medieval? Is it the aeolian mode? Some intervals in it? Or just the rhythmic repetition? If you're curious, here's the MP3, PDF and Guitar Pro files for the composition: www.dropbox.com/sh/83euqljubfp8wyg/AAArsQPkYho23qxL3kKeAxaja?dl=0

Why are guitarists afraid of a simple explanation of what a mode is and where it comes from? Teachers treat it as if it's kryptonite. Are we really so fragile that we can't think a little when learning?

Curtis Miller you would be surprised how many people complain when i do - and say things like “just shut up and play” - or “just show us the notes, stop talking!” :)

I guess I'm not surprised. I love theory because it helps me understand what I can do on my own. If you didn't explain the theory behind what you do then I would not be that interested in your lessons. I have thought a few times that I wish you would call out the scale degrees as you describe the notes you're playing. I'd rather know that you're playing the third of the chord than the fourth fret second string. I can see that on screen or pick it out by ear.
What the fuck is Eric Clapton doing here?
Not my cup of tea. Want more Chicago Style Blues.
