A BYD plant being in India explains a lot about the pricing of Nothing Phone 1 in India. The Phone 1 initially launched at around 40,000 INR (~500 usd) but in the suddenly the prices fell to 30,000. This was probably when they started manufacturing the phones sold in India in Chennai.

@@TimelyTurtle would've been true around a month ago. I think Moto edge 40 is the best buy in that price bracket (as a competitor to NP1). I think there's also a realme device with an SD888 that goes for 25K at times. Still, I do not regret my decision to get an NP1. It's been almost 6 months now and I love this device.

Easily the most interesting tech video I've seen this year.
This is not only an interesting story about making the NothingPhone1, but a good business lesson. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
bro, the fact that company is called "nothing" made me confused so many times during the video
Amazing dive into the suppply chain. Great video!
The reason it took them one year only to develop the phone is because this phone didn't bring ANYTHING new other than a couple of LEDs in the back. Even price and spec wose, this phone can be overtaken by any Samsung A series phone.
Really well made video, enjoyed it very much!
Wow, this is an eye opener for any potential startups that want to make their own hardware and also how most phones develovep. Thank you for sharing this.
Great insights. Enjoyed this video.
Uploaded in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. Thanks
This video is gold... thank you tech altar
man the tone from your last vid is so different. Carl Pei made good and affordable a advertisement choice
And $50m+ later the native camera app still takes forever to save images while zoomed in
Gsus, I never cease to be amazed that anything made by a new company at scale makes it. So much money tied up in (at best) about 3 months - that's crazy! Thanks for another fantastic video!

This was a very insightful video. Thank you.
Amazing video and really interesting topic!
Amazing information. Thanks
Awesome video man!
This video taught me something really interesting and yet still underwhelming; You can start a generic android phone company with little to no experience and little to no in-house production, by outsourcing everything including the software and only designing the back glass/ cover shape. I think that should be a thing too Diy phone where you choose the chasis shape and size from 2 or 3 options and then all the other components depending on your budget
I can relate to the whole process and problems being a hardware startup. Very well covered. Whole idea of beating the odds is heavily dependent on the vision of a company and a clear plan to success.
Hatsoff to the guy in 2:47 reading a realllly biggg book to build NOTHING 😅
what an interesting and informative video. thank you!
You've met Carl Pei, the creator of my favourite smartphone ever: the OP7. I hate notches: OP7 had the best popup camera ever. I love curved screens: OP7 had one And everything else was just perfect. Only way to make a better smartphone would be to add a removable battery. Mister Pei, I you release a Nothing with a popup camera, I'll buy your phone(s) blindly.

Thank you for such a well-narrated examination of the realities of the process. No gimmicks, just a great job.

Interesting case study. I used OnePlus one and OnePlus 5, infact I am using the same OnePlus 5 since it's launched, it's been 6 years and it still works fine. I guess Carl Pei and his team are unique. If I need to replace my OnePlus 5, I will choose nothing either the phone 2 or 3. They will reach their quality standards eventually.

Amazing video! Nice
I have a nothing phone and I have been using it every day for a year or so. The input responsiveness is laggy sometimes and the lockscreen glitches and hangs sometimes. These things might be forgivable if it weren't for a serious flaw with the camera. Apparently the phone has a 12mp and a 50mp mode. You take the same picture with each mode in bright daylight, zoom in, and there is literally no difference between the two images. Maybe this is one of the outsourcing companies cutting corners? Anyway, I won't be buying another nothing phone.
I normally don't agree with your opinions on tech in general, but your ability to gather information, breakdown topics and explain the nuances is stellar. This was one of your best.
Who would've believed anything useful would come out of TechAltar's obsession with nothing. This is incredible.

🪄✨ Made with SummarizeYT 0:00 - This phone costs around 50 million dollars to develop. 1:07 - Large companies like Samsung or Apple usually start actively working on a new flagship phone around two full years before they are released. 2:08 - Nothing is able to keep that process to about 10 to 14 months with their phones. 3:01 - The first thing those people have to do when designing a new product is coming up with a concept and for Nothing, that mostly happens in Sweden. 3:45 - 17 people in London are tasked with turning concepts into actual products that can be manufactured, including phones and earbuds. 5:27 - Nothing follows the industry standard practice of having four distinct stages of prototyping. 6:03 - Prototyping alone can cost the company 4 million dollars. 6:31 - While the hardware is built, software has to be developed too. 7:08 - Nothing has gone on a hiring spree to improve their software development team. 7:39 - A massive focus area for any phone's software team is its camera. 8:23 - The software stack is put together on their behalf. 8:27 - The development process includes engineering, design, licensing technologies, and prototyping. 9:01 - Samsung outsources about 70 million low-end devices to Chinese manufacturers. 9:24 - Nothing has over 40 employees as quality inspectors and engineers at the external factory. 10:04 - Nothing's manufacturing partner is a company called BYD Electronics. 11:01 - Nothing has a direct relationship with about 20 key suppliers such as Qualcomm, Samsung, and Sony. 14:00 - Cash flow and supply chain management are critical challenges for hardware startups. 14:23 - The company has raised 150 million dollars from venture capitalists and celebrities. 15:00 - Many hardware startups fail due to high upfront development costs and manufacturing issues.
It is a good choice to change the name of the video, I didn't watch the video when the title was how to maks a smart phone
Wow, this sounds like taking a huge risks but it seems in the case of Nothing it will pay off. I believe they could become very good competitor of Apple and their ecosystem but they need more time. Thank you for sharing the information with us through this video!

isnt nothing using visionox or some other supplier for display?
I've been watching Nothing devices and am very curious about them, but as a former and twice badly burned customer of OnePlus, I'm still a bit leery of Carl Pei.

wow... gees... that's crazy numbers...
Thank you🙏

Amazing video
Wow Nothing, thanks so much
Anyone know how many years do they provide OS update?
Very interesting video. Although I am firmly embedded in the Apple ecosystem I appreciate the way Android (as a "production ecosystem") enables opportunities for smaller companies to get into the smartphone market. Some kind of ideas can only thrive in a smaller environment and will be beneficial for all in the long run.
Do you think Nothing will be the top flagship company in the coming generations due to their transparency as a company, or do you think this strategy will hinder their growth in the flagship market?
This is amazing .
Come back HTC with a version of the M9+ !
honestly so sad that not enough people are going to buy this phone no matter how much they put into it....
So much money and they still F up the audio quality on the phone (not joking...see some reviews). 😅 Anyway with that out of the way mad respect for a company which shares this info. 🎩
