How to Accurately Shorten Bolts

How to Accurately Shorten Bolts
In this video I'm going to demonstrate how to accurately shorten bolts
I will demonstrate how to make a bolt and exact length two within 0.001 or 0.002 inch if it needs to be more accurate than that you would move this demonstration to the grinder using the same setup
in most cases what you do is you would go to a grinder and then just shorten them
In this case I made a fixture to bolt them into an machine the tops off to an exact size it's rare that you need to have a bolt and exact size but in some cases you have to depending on what you're making

Pretty neat trick Ray, thanks for sharing! This is a great way to keep a controlled length on screws and when you need that kind of accuracy, the hack saw and belt sander just won’t cut it! 😂

thank you for the nice comment and thank you for taking time to comment. It is much appreciated. It’s surprise me that these little tricks that I learned when I was doing my apprenticeship people don’t know them anymore

Great advice Ray, my Dad showed me this method many years ago, he in turn was shown this way when he was in the Royal Navy.

there are thousands of basic machining concepts that a lot of the new people are not exposed to anymore Thank you for taking the time to comment. It is much appreciated.

@@shopandmath Definitely, I bet so many past practices and techniques have been forgotten and lost in the past, thanks for reminding me of long ago days machining with my late Dad.

And if you only have a lathe you can drill and tap/countersink a piece of cylindrical stock, chuck it up, and do the same thing. Both methods are an interrupted cut however and carbide doesn’t prefer interrupted cuts. I’d use old inserts because of this.

How do you grind the 45 back on? I always roll over threads when I try

There’s a couple different ways of putting the Champer on the end of the thread that you’ve cut The first way that I used in this video was to hold the screw facing downward at a 45° angle and rotate the screw or bolt in my hand at the same time removing the same amount of material off all the round the circumference The second method of shortening bolts is to just go to a grinder or a bandsaw cut or shorten the bolt but before you do that you threaded a nut on first, by threading a nut on first, it will allow you to be parallel with either the bolt which you need to have an Allen key inside of the nut or on the pedestal grinder. It will help balance the threads with the diameter of the head of the bolt. Grind the 45° in a downward position, you get the required, Champer, then unscrew the nut, and that will guarantee that you have no burrs left on the end of the thread

@@shopandmath Ray, please think about making a video to demonstrate these ways of putting the chamfer back onto the screws.

Early in my career I did service on CNC controls. The owner of one shop I went to often had three spur gears laying on his desk. I asked him one time what they were for and told me he used them to test people applying for a job. He would say if I turn the first gear which way would the third gear turn. He called it a basic apptitude test.

That’s an interesting story. Thank you for sharing. I appreciate that. Sometimes the simplest test could tell you quite a bit about a person.
