Clutch hydraulic lines PART 1 - BMW Motorrad R1150R
#BMWR1150R #CLUTCH #SLAVECYLINDER #HYDRAULICLINE #BLEEDLINE
As in the previous episodes, I do service for my BMW R1150 motorcycle
Diagnosis & maintenance BMW Motorrad R1150R 2003 engine R28
- Location of clutch vent pipe and ventilation screw
- The only purpose was to change the clutch fluids but a few variables came into play...
- Turn the handlebars to a position in which the clutch fluid reservoir is horizontal
- Keep the brake fluid away from painted surfaces
- Choose a well-fitting screwdriver so you don't break the screw head from fluid reservoir!
- Two screws do not mean to open from fluid reservoir
- Gently strike the power tool slightly while trying to loosen the screw
- Clutch fluids should be replaced every 2 years!
- Release bleed line from the frame
- The intention was just to warm up a bit bleed line socket-head!! To make Loctite give up better!!
- Result was; Need to replace a new clutch vent pipe, so we need access to clutch slave cylinder
- Remove rear brake caliper and rear wheel
- Spread the brake pads off the disc by turning and pushing to get the brake caliper off better
- Now is a good time check rear wheel bearing play by tilting wheel
- A good time to check the brake disc thickness
- Remove rear wheel bolts
- The tire cannot fit out without removing rear silencer first
- Slacken the clamp from rear silencer
- Make sure you remember to put the spacer of rear wheel back in place
- Need to remove frame tube from gearbox for better access to clutch slave cylinder
- A lot needs to be disassembled from the front to remove the frame tube ...
- Remove side panels and fuel tank
- Remove intake pipe bolt from rear frame
- Support the final drive with a jack
- Release upper bolt from rear spring strut
- Remove brake line from the rear frame
- Release rear brake fluid reservoir from its holder
- Loosen the fasteners securing the left footrest plate
- Remove rear screw of left footrest plate
- Remove top screw of left footrest plate
- You can leave the front bolt loose in place
- Remove fasteners securing rear brake master cylinder to footrest plate
- Remember the correct order for the sleeves of rear master cylinder
- Remove the right footrest plate
- Remove rear-frame fasteners on left and right at front, but only loosen strut fasteners
- Disconnect the air temperature sensor plug, remove air filter cover and filter element
- Remove screw from air filter housing to frame
- Tilt the rear frame up and secure it with a strap attached to the handlebars
- Lift the rear frame up only enough to remove the frame tube from the gearbox
- Now you have access to remove frame tube from gearbox
- Loosen frame tube screws
- Remove the frame tube
- Now I have room to get to change that clutch bleed line (vent pipe) I broke
- In the next episode, we disconnect the clutch slave cylinder and replace the clutch vent line
Let’s continue with the next episode! Stay tuned!

My purpose is to encourage people to do things themselves!
Plus, this is a nice hobby for myself and at the same time I have the opportunity to save a lot of money by doing all the maintenance myself!
I’m not a professional with cars or motorcycles, I just want to learn how to do things myself.
If you do this service yourself, always check the correct instructions in the official service manuals. This is just my way of doing it!

Beautiful german engineering on making the slave cylinder of the clutch system, (a system that fails oh so often) so easily accessible ! Oh wait…..

Mistakes happen, I prefer to call them 'Opportunities to learn'. You've gained far more experience and knowledge about your bike and it's systems than most. Thanks for sharing, I'll look for you in Finland should I have issues with my GS!

The best videos are the ones where something went wrong. Thanks for helping us all not fall into the same pitfall. And when we do, how to sort it out. Great instruction!

I changed my rear tire and the brakes but I did not know what that line was that was hanging under near the tire. I been trying to identify the "clutch Bleed Line" for the past three days!! Thank You, Thank You. Now I know what it is and can put it back in place.

Very Helpful!!! I watched both parts. I lost some of my fear in jacking up the back sub-frame which you so clearly showed how to do. This will help me with the clutch slave, but also when the clutch needs to be done. Very Helpful!!! Thank you !!!

When you take off the wheel, it will slide out easily- at an angle if the piece of wood is not there

You can remove the tyre without removing exhaust either by jiggling or by placing the bike on a block of wood on the centrestand before you start!

Possibly. Removing it is not a big deal. By removing the rear silencer, it is better able to handle the clutch slave cylinder and its joints. 👍

If you mean the connection pipe axle, frame, ie the shaft in front of the clutch slave cylinder: The footrests must be removed on both sides, and the 2 bolts of the shaft must be loosened. As in this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/nJ-MsKeLoM7aoLw.html For me, it came off relatively easily. 👍

Да, все сделали как вы показали. Ножки сняли, два болта вообще выкрутил. А ось вытащить не можем. Она без резьбы? Боюсь выбить, вдруг по резьбе закручивается.

I ended up breaking down because i couldnt shift gears and noticed my resevoir was empty. i put some dot4 in and its not leaking by the slave cylinder but looks like its dripping kind of next to the starter, will the clutch fluid leak into the clutch and if so do i need to replace the clutch?

  • @JaniVoutilainen

If you remove starter, you can see if there are any signs of brake fluid from clutch system 👍
