I start truck driving school in April!. I'm an old lady and have wanted to drive OTR for over 20 years. Been watching videos like yours for months. So very helpful. I have my CLP and just recently learned what tandems and a 5th wheel was! No kidding. Thanks for making these videos.

JJ I love that that is so great for the new drivers coming out there and learning how to drive because I've been driving for 40 years and I love it
Thanks for showing us the proper way to slide the fifth wheel. It was as easy as it gets with me watching your video.
Thanks you're awesome dude you're better than most sites that are just generic and they just go through showing how much fun they're having or but appreciate the technical step by step real world application. You are a guy I would love to ride and train with.
Thank you so much for your video! With your instruction I was able to move the 5th wheel successfully!

Step 6, visually inspect and make sure all the pins popped into the slots. A tug test can fail you if the slide is locked up and it will feel like you have the resistance you think is right but then when you have to slam the brakes or something and the 5th wheel slide breaks free, it will slam your load forward and may cause harm to your load or even worse.

100% always make sure if that
Instead of cranking the handle a few more times to take weight off the tractor you can just dump your airbsgs. It prevents you from twisting the landing gear rod.

To move weight off the drives on to the steers which way to go?
How do u get bake lights to work hook to ur truck
What if the locking pins don't engage after all of this?
Does moving ur 5th wheel all the way up help you maneuver in tight areas?
@thedillonsmith

Moving your tandems all the way up on trailer will help you a lot more
@well-dressed-bird
5 ай бұрын
Also moving them all the way back makes backing up into tight spots easier. The trailer reacts quicker with less overhang (think of rear tires as a pivot point) and is just easier to maneuver when reversing.
Can the plate on a fifth wheel get thin and get a hole in it ?
I cant get my 5th wheel to lock back into place. Is it like the trailer tandems u gotta release the trailer brakes to make them lock back in? Having issues
@samknott6294
Жыл бұрын
When you get your fifth wheel close to where you want it . Flip your switch back to lock then rock it slightly forward or backwards . You'll know which way you need to go once you get out and look . But once you move slightly in either direction it should click into place. You should be able to hear it with your window open.
You know it
Thanks how about if I want move one hole and want stop in the middle not all the way

Is it an air system or the old type where you pull the handle?
So if the 5th wheel is all the way back that’s better for heavy loads? Please explain the reason to move it back or keep it in the front middle.. thank you
@thedillonsmith

It’s really just for weight distribution if you’re to heavy on drive axles but have some wiggle room on steers you can move weight from drives to steers and vise versa
@lr-pf4sj

@@thedillonsmith explain?
@drewrbunn
2 жыл бұрын
@@lr-pf4sj It depends where the shipper puts the weight in your trailer. We're legal for 12/34/34 for a total of 80 - But sometimes a shipper loads you 12.3/32/30. Too much weight forward. But by shifting your trailer axles and you fifth wheel you can move weight to where it's legal.
@thedillonsmith

Good advice! Did you know depending on what your tires on your steers are rated for you could technically run 12,500 on the steers. AS LONG AS YOUR TIRES ARE RATED FOR IT. Did it many times went through scales no problem. The axle up front is actually rated for 13,000lbs but the tires are usually less. Usually each tire is rated at 6,250lbs
@drewrbunn

@@thedillonsmith Yeah, up in Canada we're registered for 13/36/36, but really - is it worth being stopped in the coup so they can read the fine print on the sidewall of a tire? :D
Whats best position for 5th wheel to have best ride ?
@thedillonsmith
2 жыл бұрын
Best position is the legal limit 😂 haha but if weight isn’t an issue I always liked it right around 40ft
Wait so it’s opposite than the tandems ? You slide to the problem to take weight off but for the 5th wheel you slide to the the place you want to add weight to ?

Try setting the Trailer brake and releasing tractor brake and then go into reverse so you release pressure off the lock and then pull tractor brake so it stays there.

No. I've released and slid mine by hand many times. Properly lubed slid rails, with liquid dish soap only, will make it easy. Wear disposable gloves or a set you don't mind getting very greasy. Sliding by hand will allow you to be far more precise on which notch you wanna grab. Using liquid dish soap makes cleaning the rails easy when covered with grit and grime from the road way and rains. It'll simply wash off taking the grimewith it. Greasing the rails will never wash off and collect all the grit, making the slid very difficult. 31 years out here and own my own trucks, I've listened to others and learned a lot.

All you have to do is put your dollies down then let the air out of your tractor suspension that will take the weight off instead of trying to crank the dollies on a loaded trailor. You'll only hurt yourself doing it that way.

I have a '17 cascades with an automation 5th wheel release pull button. I put my landing gear down, remove lines, dump air bags. But can't detach. Smh. Frustrating
@thedillonsmith

You can usually manually pull it also
@williejaster

It can depend on how tight you put the landing gear down. It could be that the weight of the tractor is hanging on the pin jaws. Maybe try pulling ahead just a few inches before dumping the air bags
Step # 6 U forgot the weight distribution. Very important.
