Hey, I will try to briefly explain why it might not work for you. The main issue is that the 3d file you get from google maps doesn’t have manifold geometry, which means it won’t work in your 3d slicer. So to make manifold - 3d printer friendly - I extrude the bottom, add a cube, and most importantly use a remash modifier. However, with such highly dense geometry, it might fail. I'm aware that this solution is quite unreliable but I haven’t found any better yet.

Great video mate thanks for spending the time on this. For anyone having issues with the extrude to create a base: You will need to bisect the floor of the city and add a bisect in the cube (same cube added in the tutorial). move the new vertices in the middle of the cube created by the bisect to where you want the floor and right click to add a face which will create your floor.

Hello Andrew! Great tutorial so far, one quick question at 6:38 you did something to add the cube to the city, I'm stuck on that part so I can remesh it, if I just click remesh to the cube it doesn't do anything. Thanks for the help in advance!

Hey, I don't exactly know what you mean. I added the cube inside the edit mode of the city with shift A, then matched cube dimensions with the edge of the city and deleted the top face... with these steps I tried to quickly make the city model manifold. however it is not very reliable workaround and It might not work in newer versions

I couldn't get RenderDoc to work reliably (Chrome kept changing GPU processes every time I hooked one) but Google recently released 3d Tiles so it is very easy to use BLOSM add-on for Blender to bring in the data. I've been trying to perform the steps that you show but have been having problems. First is Blender 3.6 vs yours. Second may the resolution/complexity of the objects. Any ideas or help are greatly appreciated! Your video is currently the best one out there that describes how to take data from GMAPS through Blender to 3d Print. Thanks!

hey, thanks for feedback. I use blender addon called Screencast keys. You can find it online is some blender forum. Dont forget to press Shift+Alt+C to activate.

When I increase the voxel resolution to 2 certain buildings go missing. Is this because of internal geometry or gaps in the model?

It's because of holes in your model. If you spot those holes you can fill the them by just putting a plan on top to cover it up and merging the model with the plane. The remesh modifier just seems to look at the mesh no matter if it's connected and just creates a new mesh from scratch that's manifold.

hey, sorry but its hard to tell. You can try extruding all vertexes(shortcut - A) instead of only bottom ones, but you might lost buildings details. Also try if it really does cause any issues when you carry on in the next steps.

I'm following along with the video but when i get to the part where i need to remesh, Blender locks up and crashes because it turns up the CPU usage to 100% and uses ALL of my ram. I'm running an 8th gen core i5 with 64gb of ram. I didn't think that would be a problem but apparently it's not powerful enough. What am i doing wrong that is causing this issue?

try going into edit mode first and then adding the modifier. This way Blender will only calculate the remesh once you exit edit mode. If you increase your voxel size while still in edit mode Blender can handle it!

Really great tutorial but I have the same problem as below, when I extrude the floor is going down and appears gap between the vertex. Please help! 😅

When I extrude towards the bottom, there is no volume generated the layer just shifts downwards and im left with a hollow model. What am i doing wrong?

Select the bottom faces, shift and d to duplicate and enter. Then extrude z axis as seen in the vid.

Mate, i'm not exaggerating when i say i've spent WEEKS of my life trying to figure out what was going wrong. Couldn't tell you how many posts on reddit i made, and on different forums too, all to no avail. Tonight after spending 10 fucking hours today alone trying to do this, i stumble across your comment and you have totally made my fucking year, nevermind my day. To think it was simply 3 keys to get the bottom to extrude boggles my mind that nobody was able to figure that out but you my man have saved my sanity. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!!!!!!!!!@@tskuhac

New version doesnt have the inject into process button on render doc. I am not sure how to get around this.

Not sure why its not working. However you can instead use BLOSM to import google earth data to blender. There are many tutorials on youtube.

You will only need blender Blosm addon and Google Cloud platform... in blosm addon settings - "buildings with details" option is enough and make sure to disable Join 3D Tiles option

​@@andrewsponer7973am using the blosm add on.. It gives more and clean details.. But it requires a google key.. And to active your google account you need to add your credit card.. Then you can use it for free with daily limits.. But for some reason it's not allowing me to do that
