The USA should regulate companies that gather data from the citizens of the USA, China does not have the same moral, responsibility or economical concerns the US or its allies do. I think this comment is very misleading because he clearly understands it, he’s simply trying to explain to those who may not. A lot of Americans think all CEOs are created equal and that they are always the largest individual shareholder, that the board answers to them and not the other way around. This obviously isn’t the case and although the job title and responsibilities are the same their power varies greatly and is determined by their shares and their influence and connections with other high shareholders. This is why he brings up Mark Zuckerberg because the truth is that this is what Americans think of when they think of CEO, someone who must approve any and all changes and can easily make their own changes. The point of this video is to let people know that the TIkTok CEO doesn’t have the kind of power that they associate with the position but that there are people in the company who do have that kind of power which is why he lists them. The CEO himself has only been working there for a few years so likely has very little say, instead he is more the frontman for the majority shareholders.

While I share your reservations on TikTok and it’s relationship with US national security, I am having a hard time finding further information on the “puppet CEO” status of Shou Chew. If possible, can you provide more information on his role? When you suggest that he’s powerless at TikTok - does that mean he doesn’t have day to day operational control? Does that mean that he operates the company daily, but is powerless to enforce any sort of data security? Is there good information on how exactly these decisions are being made at TikTok internally, and how much influence Shou actually has?

I found the video quiet biased.. Like it started with a conclusion instead of leading to it. Technically, every CEO is a front of their respective company and yet here it's presented as some nefarious thing, and there's a lot of companies where the CEO doesn't have absolute power and in most cases CEOs have bosses, called the board of directors(secondarily the shareholders).

The problem is blind adherence to certain principles is one of the last moral high grounds that the US enjoys over China. Once the US bans TikTok, they lose that moral high ground and US citizens will become disillusioned with the principles they were taught to believe in. This type of mass disillusionment was what caused the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Your move America.

I know this is OT, but when you brought up Udacity, I felt I had to write this somewhere. In the beginning Udacity had it right. They had classroom communities directly connected to the class, with a link to the forums with markup available, right next to the video without any need to hunt it down. People could quickly get to the forum and get to know each other, and people would get the opportunity to shine if they contributed to the discussions. Free classes where people would get certificates, plus have a community with people who would help them, really gave people motivation. But when other platforms introduced paid certificates, Udacity wanted in on that, and much like when Hippocrates burned his own Temple down, Udacity realized what they built was too good. They Realized with timed classes and exam periods and a strong sense of community in classroom cohorts people had too much motivation, so they had to go about dismantling the system. They started by reversing their position that timed classes were prefered, as many studies show this improves productivity. Peter Norvig used to give speeches about this at Ted Talks, but for some reason they chose to cater to the few by making every class have no time constraints, when they could have just allowed people educated in one class cohort to join another later to take part in a later exam if there was a scheduling conflict. But this wasn't enough. They also realized students could still access the forums for a class and ask their friends questions, so Udacity made these cohort specific classes difficult to access. Ease and simplicity was replaced with difficulty and annoyance. Yet when they realized people would still watch the content for free and no matter how annoying it seemed, they would just use the forums anyway, they made it so you had to pay to access classroom specific forums, and with his move the mentors who could move and help with the class, disappeared. With general forums instead of cohort specific classes, everything was less focused and everyone had become disillusioned. You could no longer shine, being the first to post or reply to a topic. People who were once motivated to help were gone, and people who wanted to learn would stay for a bit before realizing they couldn't get help unless they paid for a credential without much value - especially with no community to help each other find work - and then they would just stop coming. After seeing the writing on the wall, I personally decided to attend a traditional University; although I studied the Design/the Fine arts on scholarship at OCADU. I was already skilled in various areas of development, and Udacity gave me python and some insight into areas I hadn't been allowed to access before; yet, without the community it now feels like a wasteland at times. Nobody wants to learn alone, especially when they are stuck and the tutors made available for a price aren't nearly as caring as someone who just wanted to help and possibly shine by helping. It sucks not having friends to compete with, friends who would show you their version of a piece of code or how they solved a math problem, so you can write much better code. I was often one of the better members in my classes, as I enjoy learning and problem solving, but there were still mentors/students who had skills above my own making themselves available, who that gave me great insights and that interaction, which is now lost, is what often gave me added reasons to improve.

The recent actions taken by the American government have brought attention to a potential threat that could result in unintended consequences. The concern is that other countries may begin to question whether the US has too much influence over the opinions of their citizens, leading them to consider whether they should also restrict American social media access.
