Back in the 1980's I subscribed to Bowhunter Magazine. I read something about dunking your nocks into boiling water and then placing the arrow onto the string of your recurve, which was standing by, ready to receive the arrow, and stretching the nock a little. This worked for awhile. Then one day, my arrow, which was nocked upon my recurve, which was laying across my lap, suddenly fell to the ground underneath my tree stand. This happened several more times until I finally quit boiling those nocks!

Did the knock break or just come unglued. I did the same to fit nocks a little tighter 22 years ago when I was leaving for a caribou hunt and thank God I had extra nocks and super glue with me cause I knocked an arrow to shoot a hull ND my aluminum arrow fell out of the nock (nock still on the string) . Nock another arrow and same thing happened. Never got a shot on that bull because of it. I think the boiling killed the glue or made the nock taper hole open up some.

@@SamkoTradBowNo, the nock didn't break or come unglued. It was simply too wide to stay on the string and arrow fell off while I was sitting on the stand.

I typically slap my arrow on my leg and side of bow to hear any cracks or lose tips.

I used to shoot three under, but stopped, at least for the time being, for several reasons. NUMBER ONE, if your arrow ever decides to come off the rest during a critical draw on an animal, you're screwed. The only way to get it back on there is let the bow down. I can torque it back on the rest with split finger. NUMBER TWO, my bow seemed to be louder on release? NUMBER THREE, the most trouble I have ever had with fractured nocks, is shooting three under. I think there is an increased downward force on the arrow nock (more string whip). I wrap my string serving where the arrow snaps on, with a thin layer of waxed dental floss. It gives a snug nock that won't easily come off, OR slide down the string. Side question: Have you ever experimented with different string diameters? to achieve faster flight, etc.? I typically shoot a thicker string just to help with nock grip AND finger comfort, but suspect a 12 strand might shoot faster than a 16 for example. Increased speed might be insignificant?

I've never messed with a chrono in my life. So no idea about seeing speeds. I like a tick string as it hits my arm less than skinny strings. I shoot a 16 strand b55

Two days ago I was shooting and apperantly had a nock that was cracked also, didn't really feel any change on fittting onto the serving, but it exploded when I released the arrow, yes when this happened it felt like a dry fire, luckly didn't do any damage, so when I nock my arrow now I stay fully awear of how it's feeling. Very coinsidental you put this video up on nock fitting. Thanks

Yep been there before. Scares the crap out of you and the fear of damaging the bow pops into your head. One of the reasons I went back to dacron for all my bows. It's gentler if it ever happens again. ( not saying everyone should shoot dacron, just saying it is one of the reasons I do).

I have done arrow over knock or 2 nocks so I have less issue on needing a super tight nock. I also do run a knock in smaller size where I have heated up nocks so I can fit them on and while warm and on knock I press a bit into the nock so nock will no. I also go using a split finger method of archery but I have had to check when arrow is way loose as I have had a similar issue since kind my better Chinese aluminum arrow comes with is a kind of skinny glue on pin style but being a glue over a pin, how skinny nocks are due to being a glue over, are more durable then most nocks made that skinny that are a press in lightweight glue style where nock needs to be non hollow in design or even solid bone/horn or wood.

2:57 I do the same thing with my split finger grip. It may be a mental thing but I feel like I get a cleaner release not having that pinch on the arrow.

I like mine a little tighter than most I guess but I absolutely hate it when an arrow drops off of my bow while in the tree stand. Not noticed flight problems of my arrows. Just nice to know that the wind blowing doesn’t cause my arrow to fall if my bow is just setting there waiting

Do you use B55 Darcon for your longbow strings instead of fast flight? I have a Northern Mist Classic also, and Steve sent me a skinny string for it, and my nocks were way too loose. I added another serving over the top of the existing serving. And it works pretty well, but I am not the best at applying it, and it's certainly not pretty, but works fine. I have been thinking about going to a B55 string instead of this skinny fast flight string that the bow came with. I just wonder if I will lose any speed to speak of, not that this bow is very fast anyway, since I shoot fairly heavy arrows?

I do shoot b55 dacon. 16 strands. I like a thicker string and love dacron. But 99% of people prefer d97. D97 is tougher and last much longer. St Lawrence traditional on Facebook (mindy) makes some amazing strings if you want a new one.

Yes, up to a point. An exception would be compound bows creeping up into fast compound crossbow or swept back limb super compound crossbow FPS/MPS as hwy mightneed a tighter or looser nock given. Might be different for some lever limb bows where a person is using metal cable limbs as you might want a looser nock so plastic, wood, or bone/horn of knock is not being eaten up by a metal string.
