How Thomas Edison (Accidentally) Created Hollywood

✪ Claim your 2 months of Skillshare Pro (free!) ► gobc.tv/skillshare
Next time you look at LA's famous "Hollywood" sign, you can thank Thomas Edison!
Edison-owned Motion Picture Patents Company dominated the movie industry way before anyone even heard of Hollywood. In this video, we'll show you how Edison's monopolistic practices forced the then aspiring moviemakers to migrate from the East Coast to LA, where land was cheap (and Mexico was nearby)!

Great video! The impact of Edison on American history can never be understated. I understand that the first World War 1 impacted film production in Europe but are their any other reasons European feature length films were not able to compete with Hollywood in the United States after the war? Europe produced some fine film makers during the 1920s such as Fritz Lang.

By January 1879, at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, Edison had built his first high resistance, incandescent electric light. It worked by passing electricity through a thin platinum filament in the glass vacuum bulb, which delayed the filament from melting. Still, the lamp only burned for a few short hours.

No. Edison forming the Trust did not "create Hollywood". Vitagraph was part of the MPCC and they had a studio in Santa Monica in 1911 so it would make no sense for non-MPCC studios to "run away from Edison" by setting up shop 5 miles away in Hollywood. There was film production in Fort Lee NJ (1900+), Jacksonville FL (1908), Santa Monica (1911) and many other US cities. It finally consolidated near Sunset and Gower starting in 1911 because 1) the train to NY was easy to get to and brought everything you needed, 2) Westerns were popular and Florida/NJ don't look western, 3) Los Angeles was much cheaper than Florida, and 4) existing studios from the NY area quickly consolidated production to as few locations as possible. You need talent, film stock and gear and Los Angeles became the place outside of NY where you could get all of those. Once it reached critical mass it grew and it didn't make $$$ sense to shoot anywhere else until the mid-1970s or so. Universal Pictures began in Chicago. Paramount in NYC and Fox in Fort Lee, NJ -- again not hiding from Edison/Trust. Production moved to L.A. but most of the money men stayed in the East. You could defy Edison and the Trust but you could not hide or escape from them. There is little evidence that anyone expected to hide from Edison.

this video is a real prove why you should become Thomas Edison, and not Nikola Tesla even Elon Musk himself admire Thomas Edison, Tesla name is just because of the engine of the car nothing more please dude, look at reality, Nikola Tesla is just a lonely poor old man who died alone his apartment room, he's seriously trying to build a tower for ambitious project and it was a failure, while Edison *accidentally* build Hollywood

No offense to anyone who idolizes Edison but Tesla was still a much better and greater genius. In fact anyone who still thinks Edison was better than Tesla clearly needs a lobotomy because they clearly have something badly wrong with their brain. Most of the love for Edison and hate for Tesla stems from the fact that Edison was an American and Tesla was a foreigner from Eastern Europe. That's just xenophobia and blind nationalism at it's worst. I stand by my support for Tesla regardless of what anyone else says. So anybody who has a problem with this comment of mine feel free to leave hateful trolling replies. You'll just be wasting your time because you will NEVER change my mind. God bless Nikola Tesla and may his great legacy forever live on.
