Having just finished the Hum Goes on Forever, coming back to the ideas of The Greatest Generation and seeing how much the band has evolved in its ideas is wild. Soupy has made comments about how Wyatt's song is a direct answer to Passing Through a Screen Door, and there are many callbacks to songs in other albums as well.

Something I always loved about TWY is the regular melodic and lyric callbacks to their previous work. One of the best bands in the genre and still always improving.

What hooked me from the begining and what kept me interested in everything they continue to do is that evolution of ideas. The music in Hum is notably slower, but they still have entire songs as callbacks to songs with much higher energies.

Kind of why I love Hum so much, I feels like the perfect progression for them, growing up but not forget what came before

The wonder years have gotten me through so much. I literally grew up with them. The upsides came out when I graduated high school and was starting college, suburbia came out as I was trying to get sober and find my way, greatest generation got me through the death of a few friends and a relapse and loss of love. No closer to heaven I was kinda fucked up for and didn't find until I got sober again. Sister cities I didn't care for. The hun goes on I'm just now jamming on and right now I'm 6 days clean and so emotional and a total trainwreck and everyone has given up on me which I can't blame them for.... But finding the newest record has helped me feel not so alone and I'm so grateful to hear Soupy and the fellas speaking to me once again in such a dark time. It's as if they've always been in my corner and always will. Thanks guys (I know they won't see this lol) for honestly keeping me alive...

Soupy has a talent of being able to describe feelings and emotions in his lyrics that you understand how it feels to him without having to experience it yourself. You should check out his side project Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties. He tells a pretty interesting story that he himself has not actually gone through but damn it sure feels like he did. If it wasn't for his distinctive voice I would have thought that it was someone else entirely singing about their life.

TGG is one of my favorite albums of all time, and hands down my favorite TWY album. I feel like it's the album where the band stopped trying to be a Pop-Punk band and started being The Wonder Years, and every album they've released since has followed suit. Also, the final track of TGG still to this day blows me away. The way its a perfect recap of the entire album, while still telling its own story just amazes me. For me, the best thing about TWY is their progression through their albums, Get Stoked On It included. Each album has a slight shift in style and tone, while always being pure Wonder Years. I'm excited to see how their new album compares to their older stuff, but I still don't expect it to top TGG for me.

Yeah, I gotta hand it to TWY for not doing the same thing every album. Might not enjoy Sister Cities, but I respect that it was something different. Cant wait to listen to Hum!

Stained Glass Ceilings is one of my favorite TWY songs. Not sure if you were confused about that song and Jason Butler stylistically or lyrically but the song is about racial oppression, so Jason singing about his first-hand experience, with that screaming emotion, fits perfectly to me. It's hard for me to get through this song without a tear in my eye.

that album changed my life. i heard there there back in 2018 and i craved more of them instanly. "we watched the 92' birds take the field without jerome brown" always stood out to me it somehow makes you feel for something you never experienced i dont know how soupy does it.

The Greatest Generation is the only album that I consciously made an effort to learn bass parts for every song. When I'm going through a hard time, I'll just throw that record on as loud as I can, and I'll just lose myself in the basslines. There's something so cathartic of being exhausted by the last minute of Funeral but still throwing everything I have into giving that last bit all the love it deserves. I finished writing for my new record and realized how much it was influenced by The Wonder Years, and TGG more specifically. My lyrics, basslines, and even some of the choices in guitar hooks and ambient lead bits are a tribute to this band in a way. It's just the sound that hit my heart the hardest and stuck around.

Madelyn is recorded purposely like a demo, it was originally made on the floor just messing around and they liked the feel of it and tried to recreate it in the studio.

I Love This Band And Album So Much!! I'm Going To See Them This Friday!

Absolutely love this band. Greatest Generation is definitely up there for me but the way all the instrumentation hung together in No Closer to Heaven tops it for my ears. I’d say thematically, The Hum Goes on Forever cuts deepest for me as a parent with young kids. The line about finding hope in the pocket of a winter coat, the gloves a reminder of not being alone. And being brave for your kids or at least trying to hold it together for them when really you’re struggling. I wept singing that line more than once. This band continues to grow and evolve and learn from sounds like sister cities and bring it all back home and reintegrate. It’s brave to venture off and I think it’s a main reason we haven’t heard the drums or instruments phone it in or water themselves down. Just a wonderful reduction of all the good stuff. Great video by the way. So cool to hear thoughts on something that’s so well etched in my brain.

I was there when the album released. Living in the moment. Reading the lyrics while listening in my bedroom with my best friends. One of which passed, this was his favorite album. Saw them on tour and at warped. What a time to be alive

I just saw them live this weekend, not knowing much about them and having gone for the other bands mostly, but my god they blew me away. So loud, so sharp, and so genuine. They ended with come out swinging and it brought me to tears

One of the most underrated bands ever.

The wonder years has been my favourite band since the upsides came out, and I feel like I’ve grown as the band has grown, from struggling through my teen years with the upsides, suburbia and greatest generation, all the albums leading to the hum goes on I feel like each one meets me where I’m at in the world.

I was 15 when I first heard this album, I was into a lot of metalcore and never heard of “Pop punk” at the time. My friend however, was very big into the genre of Pop punk and had randomly asked if I wanted to go to a show with him, that show being The Wonder Years TGG tour. They were accompanied by Citizen, Real Friends, Modern Baseball and Fireworks (man did I take that lineup for granted not knowing any of these bands). Anyways I said sure because I’m always open for new music and sure it would be fun regardless. Ever since then this band holds a special place in my heart and has opened me up into a large amount of the music I now listen to today.

I already really enjoyed The Greatest Generation when I listened to it, but your review helped me open up my eyes to plenty of things I never picked up before. I always admire pop punk albums with plenty of depth and storytelling, and I can see myself revisiting the album a ton. You should listen to We Don't Have Each Other by Aaron West And The Roaring Twenties. It's Dan Campbell's solo project. Aaron West is a character that Dan Campbell made and he uses the music to tell his story and he acts as the character in live shows. We Don't Have Each Other is probably tied for my favorite concept record of all time.

Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties is for sure my favorite concept record(s) of all time, but I also think it might be better than TWY. I have been of the mentality for a couple years that We Don’t Have Each Other is way better than Routine Maintenance, but having listened more in depth to Routine Maintenance, I think it might be better. The catharsis of Aaron helping his nephew out and being his Rick when he doesn’t have one is such an emotional scene. There’s more catchy songs on the first album, but I think there’s more substance on the second. Both are incredible though. S class storytelling.

Great video mate, Suburbia was the first album of theirs that I listened too. Hooked immediately!

Really enjoyed this one man. Not much to say since I read the script but damn this goes so hard. It’s a good ass one. Editing is great and the script has some good emotion to it. This album is tied to an important former relationship of mine. It has an extra level of bittersweet and I absolutely love listening to it and going back to that year

I was huge on TWY from 2016-2020 and while I fell out of the band and pop punk in general the last few years, becoming a father a few months ago has really changed my outlook on life and I’m excited to go back to their last couple of albums and see how they impact me now

This album got me through a lot growing up and still is my favorite album from twy. I feel like for me, I’ve moved on from that wallowing mindset and where I could once relate so closely at the time I just no longer have that connection or relation. I still give it a listen every now and then, but with a smile knowing it got my through some heavy shit and that Dan seems to have gotten through it as well.

I've listened this band since 2015 when I was 16 and they've been my favorite band since then. TGG is my favorite album specially cause I can relate with a lot of the themes in the album and it sure helps enjoy the album on a whole other level. I realized that cause their next albums resonated less with me, even tho I'm still able to appreciate them from what they are. Glad to see a great video talking about them and giving them some of the recognition they surely deserve!

Greatest Generation and Suburbia really mean a lot to me despite only finding them over the past 2 years or so. Early 2010s, talking about the city (me being from Maryland makes it slightly easier to connect) and a lot of evolution in the lyrics about growing up and things changing. It's a perfect recipe for me and the fond memories I have growing up in the era that these albums came out in even if I found them later. But the fact I did find them as a young adult probably made them even better.

Also at 6:25 I think this is something that works out well for them, as their albums were made in certain parts of their lives. People can apply them to themselves however they see fit. I can apply a lot of their newer and older songs to my life at almost any stage. It's so dynamic.

Soupy seems to release music that echo the struggles I’m going through at that moment. Back in 2014, I was just starting college but I was at one of the worst lows in my life. I was dating a woman who was extremely controlling, pushing me to have a kid with her while simultaneously berating me for spending time with my roommates. Devil in My Bloodstream spoke to me on a few different levels. My granddad fought in WW2, came back shell shocked and later developed Alzheimer’s before I got to know him as the brilliant college professor he was before he later devolved to having the mindset of a toddler. Knowing that Alzheimer’s is hereditary, along with the unmanaged depression I was feeling at the time, I didn’t wanna curse a kid with that fate, not to mention curse a kid with a horrible mother as well. I was terrified when she told me she was pregnant, and I felt even worse when she had said she lost the baby, because a part of me felt relieved. “We Don’t Have Each Other” from AW20 came out and I had a listen, and it spoke even more to me. I joined the military in 2018 after flunking out of school where I found out about a tumor in my leg. I was separated for it, and I was kinda lost as to what to do with my life. Job hopped for a couple years. All the while I had a playlist full of TWY and AW20 bc the songs made me feel like I wasn’t near as alone as I was. Up until recently, I still didn’t want to have kids bc of the “devils in my bloodstream”. Therapy, medication, and supportive friends have kinda changed that a bit. I’m still terrified, but more for the world my future kids will grow into adulthood in. Enter “Hum Goes on Forever” and “In Lieu of Flowers”. The right music at the right time.

Suburbia has always been my love for some reason, I think more nostalgia reasons I've been with em from the beginning. TGG is one of my favorites I honestly can't choose a favorite though, they all have a special place in my heart, I literally grew up with them. Now the newest album having a newborn is absolutely wild also missing a friend that's passed on with the Old Friends like Lost Teeth I just love everything they do cause it ALWAYS somehow relates to my life to the T. I've had Hank tattooed on me since I was 18 im 29 now. Love this band!

The lyric “I’ve been looking for tears in the screen door” is just awesome. So simple yet so effective of what it’s trying to say. To me, it means there are some things that you want that are so close that you can see and maybe even hear and smell- but they’re just out of reach. Looking for tears is like looking for a way through to what you want to achieve or obtain, but you just can’t seem to make it through.

Going to the anniversary tour for this album going to be sick, they have been touring basically non stop for the last two years. Every show I see them is an experience and the vibes are always on point. Sad there was no show in my state for the hum goes on :(

I've been telling people this is one of the best albums of the 21st century for years. Not any individual song, but a full album experience. And while I like each new TWY album more than the last, I think this is their best album specifically for drums and backing vocals. The consistent backing vocals that aren't harmonies of the main melody, and without lyrics. And the drumming is just nuts- fills and beats are all over the place and give the whole album a frantic and textured feel, riding that fine line and never quite being too much. Both aspects serve the songs very well. Mike Kennedy is one of the best drummers in rock music. The production is what sets this album apart more than anything, though. Those backing vocals sound so crisp and clean. Soupy's vocals always sitting just right in the mix, never any masking despite the insane amount of high-mids present. How the mid and low ranges of the bass sound like two separate entities in the context of the mix to keep control of a MASSIVE bottom end and not let the mids get in the way of the guitars. And those drums, they are perfect. The snare and kick that always cut perfectly without too much high end, crack or click. The cymbals that wash over the whole mix but leave plenty of room for the guitars and vocals. The dynamic control over the whole album is also incredibly well done- high contrast but never losing power or momentum, building and taking away just the right amount at the right times.

I really fell in love with Suburbia last year. I didnt even think to listen to any of their following music but ill have to give this a listen

I found them in 2017 on Sirius Radio's The Emo Project! I got into them more in 2020, and since they've easily become one of my favorite bands!

For me, the best TWY release will always be "Won't be Pathetic Forever" EP. It's such a product of it's time, the perfect snapshot of the scene in 07/08. Is it a lyrical masterpiece? Hell no but it's dam catchy and still has one of the best chants/sing-alongs in any punk song from the title track.

Ah I used to love this album. Over the years I my love for it has died a little but I still put it in my top 5 pop punk albums probably

No Closer to Heaven is great, and I love the natural direction they took on that album, but The Greatest Generation really is their magnum opus. And I really enjoy Get Stoked On It! As you said, it's a nostalgia trip for me. The scene at that time had a lot of bands with raw ass debut albums like this and they were so much fun to mosh to at concerts. There are some clunkers, but also def highlights: Bout to get Fruit Punched, Homie; What if We Swam into Nothing; We Were Giants.

I couldnt disagree more, about their newer releases (with Sister Cities being my favorite record of theirs, despite 'The Hum Goes On Forever being brilliant), but there is something trully special about songs from The Greatest Generation. Cul-De-Sac especially hits me, since it became sort of Anthem for me, during the changes I took on in my life in past few months. Sometimes it feels like, this band makes songs based on my life. Sister Cities released around the time my grandfather died, and listening to 'Raining in Kyoto', song that tackles that topic, was really soothing to me, and Cul-De-Sac truly hit me in the gut, making the point about value of true friendship, and yourself.

@@RoweReviews Both No Closer to Heaven and Sister Cities took awhile to grow on me, but I continue to have the opinion that each new TWY album is their best. I think they have really become a band where you have to explore their intentions and concept to fully appreciate the record. Sister Cities in particular, having a much darker and intentionally muddy sound at times, with less focus on catchy anthems and reaching for raw catharsis (but I still think brilliant songwriting). It also deviates from how they tend to arrange the three guitar parts and backing vocals. The Hum Goes On Forever is something of a return to form, but with even more clarity in the production and some surprising moments in the vocal melodies.

@@adamlee6389 Yeah i feel like NCTH kinda isnt appreciated by a listener unless theyve lost someone super close and then listen to it, specifically the title track and Cigarettes and Saints. I personally did not like any song from Sister Cities except for Sister Cities and TWY is my all time favorite band. I like THGOF though, because it had a bit more of the TWY style mixed with that Aaron West feel. I just love Dan lmao

No closer to heaven is CRIMINALLY underrated. I didn't like it at first either, but the more i opened up to it the more I started to like it. A lot like The Front Bottoms stuff there for a while.

Best TWY album and top 5 albums imho. Lyrical masterpiece. Love the references and metaphors to generations past and I Just Want to Sell Out My Funeral is a medley of everything summarized perfectly.

Wonderful video! Was that a hint that a Remo Drive video next?

Sadly no. This was a bit of a one off video, but Greatest Hits is one of my favorite emo/pop-punk albums. Love its attitude.

New fans here. KZread algorithm brought me to Low Tide, and then Wyatt's Song. As a father, Wyatt's Song almost make my eyes wet. Search for their album, found The Hum Goes On Forever. Goes on repeat for this whole week. I wonder if I ever found them earlier. This band grows up with their fans. Since "seventeen with fire in my gut" until "keep you and your brother safe". Oh, and I found Hum Goes On Forever's both opening and closing is "I don't wanna die".

Great video and great album. I can confidently say that THGOF is definitely rivaling TGG as The Wonder Years best album.

They started as Bangarang. As in from the movie Hook. Im from the same home town of Lansdale Pa. You do have a lot of history correct. However, where they started is not from the street they claim in Philly. Given the song "Wanted to be brave" says specifically whites road. It is a road that the local pool is located on as well as the red door on the church that is on main st at the local Episcopalian church. Not to mention the train ride that starts at the lansdale train station at main and broad called the R5. Try me. I lived there for 30 years. You really should visit places you about.

I'm a fan of all their albums, but the first was pretty good 👍🏿 teenage parents is a really good song from TGG but Napster removed it from the platform so I'm going to try to find it on vinyl.

One of my favorite records from them next to suburbia I've given you all and now I'm nothing.

TGG was definitely their best, until The Hum Goes On Forever. It doesn't have a single skipable track to me. It more or less feels like the "answers" to the past albums' questions.

I listened to their new one last night and really enjoyed it. Massive improvement from Sister Cities, the writing is really good, and it had solid variety. There were some songs I wasn't as into, but it had plenty of highlights. Wyatt's Song and Old Friends Like Lost Teeth were my favs.

And now, I’m unfortunately beginning to question my decision to even watch this video. Do I know too little about The Wonder Years? I mean, “You’re The Reason I Don’t Want to World to End”-which is a *_mouthful_* of a title, by the way-is still their only song I’ve heard to this very day. Please tell me that song is in their album _The Greatest Generation._ Otherwise, what’s the dang point?!

Don't plan on making a video on it, but I really enjoyed it! Just a solid project from them all around. Lots of highlights.

The upsides, suburbia, and the greatest generation are just amazing imo. But other than the track "Cardinal" i couldn't really get into their last 2 albums. I love the wonder years.

In my opinion TGG was the best pop-punk album ever written. The WW2 era metaphors are some of the most clever lyrics ever written. Soupy is just on a different level. I wish TWY was still a pop-punk band.

TGG is a really good album, but I don't get how the general consensus is that it's better than Suburbia or Upside. Maybe I'm missing something? I think I lyrics might be the best of any Wonder Years albums(either that or Suburbia) but I think that Suburbia is the best across the board. Although I will say, I think TGG is the album that Dan had his best performances on (other than Madelyn)

I find TGG to be the more ambitious and better project ofc, but Suburbia really has a ton going for it. It's fun, heartfelt, and very catchy. So I could see why some would like it more than TGG

I don't get why people call them pop punk. They're clearly emo. They make use of dynamic song structures with regular shifts in tempo, screamed vocals, odd time signatures and sad, confessional lyrics. These are characteristics of emo, not pop punk.

I think they developed into something more akin to emo and have always incorporated some of those elements in their music, but to say that everything up to Suburbia and even tracks on TGG onwards aren't pop-punk is a bit of a stretch. They just do the genre much more authentically and with much more nuance than most of their contemporaries.

@pushon10 I definitely know what you mean and to be clear, I love TWY, but I still think what they're doing is essentially power chords + palm muting + verse chorus bridge chorus. When I think emo, I think way more complicated musicianship, non-linear song structures, open tunings etc. Listen, we can both agree the band are great regardless!

This seems like an attention seeking, biased, immature review from a Gen-Z who did not grow up on pop punk. (The way you skipped passed "The Upsides" was a dead give away.) I think you have to have lived and experienced loss to really appreciate albums like "No Closer To Heaven" and "Sister Cities". I also think you should do more fact checking before reviewing what you think some of these songs are about. I have yet to hear a TWY album that I don't enjoy. Every one has it's place. Every one tells its own story of what they were going through and what mattered to them at the time. I grew up on pop punk. I've been through some shit. And every time they've released an album, it has been exactly what I needed to hear at the time. This shit is like therapy for some of us. So much respect for Dan Campbell and his song writing gift👌🏼❤️ Also, who hates "Madelyn" ??

"Attention seeking" christ, my channel is not even focused on pop-punk music. I just happened to like an album and wanted to write about it for fun, it getting a bunch of views was just a stroke of luck ;) And yeah, I didn't grow up on pop-punk, but I do know that the Upsides was an integral part of building the 2010s scene, I only brushed passed it since I didn't have much to say about the album itself. I'm glad their other albums matter to a lot of people, but as a more general, young music fan, I'm just not into it. Tell ya what, I'll come back to those albums after my whole family is dead lmao.
