How The VW TDI Balance Shaft Module Fails

Today we are looking at more failed Volkswagen parts. This is the failure of the TDI Balance Shaft Module. This part came out of a 2005 B5.5 Passat TDI. This is not an extremely common failure, but it can be very expensive to fix. You may also hear this referred to as the Oil Pump Module.

I currently have a '99 Passat with AFN engine, 223,000 miles, runs beautifully, doesn't use a drop of oil between changes, it's done 80,000 miles for me, and I've never had to touch the engine apart from service items. I had two 1Z s before that, and they were the same, for the last 12 Years. The early 1.9 TDI is by far the most reliable engine I've ever owned ;)

I started hearing a very slight scraping chain noise today under the car that be heard on both sides of the car. I knew the only chain in my car is the balance shaft once since its chain driven. It's very slight and can hardly be heard but thankfully I caught it in time

373000 kms on my 2001 golf TDI ALH, changed a maf replaced some old vac hoses replaced a fuel temp sensor and a belt tensioner and that's all the grief she has ever given me. I go 17000 kms on oil changes I run Shell T6 in the winter cause Canada gets cold. And run liquimoly in the summer. And aside from general maintenance I imagine the body will fall off before that 1.9 decides to pile up. If you get the chance should get into some ALH videos some of the more difficult trouble shooting or ways to increase mileage and tricky part replacement. Wicked vids though none apply to me yet i still find myself watching.

Charles, once again a very clear explanation as you always do. I have a TDI engine that I bought at our local pull-a-part, hoping to eventually swap into my 2002 Passat. Doing so, I would like to keep my costs as minimal as is reasonably safe to do. Is there any thought about just replacing the sprockets, chain, chain guide, etc. on the balance module with new OEM parts without resorting to some of the more expensive methods as mentioned in the video? I only expect to have this working engine for another 5 years or 50k miles before I trade my vehicle. Thanks for your comments. Appreciate the all the time and expertise you put into your videos.

I'll admit I'm a newbie to the TDI world and recently purchased a 2005 Bug with the 1.9tdi. Is this something that is a common failure on the engine that I have or just the 2.0 Sorry still learning the generations of the engines along with their common issues and what I should do to the newly acquired DD. (skid plate for instance) Thanks for your channel been going through a lot of your videos.

I have a question. (sorry for my bad english) I have heard the same problem often it happens on the 1.4 tdi engine (on Vw polo, Skoda fabia, Seat ibiza) in the 2001-2009 version. I always regularly performed maintenance with Castrol Edge 5-30 oil and original filters , however, I'm still worried about the possibility of such a failure, even if for the moment everything is perfect . I have traveled 215,000 kilometers and I would be happy to continue . Should I do to change the chain , rotors and tensioners , even if for the moment works well ? I found on ebay the repair kits to about 150 € , but this assumes that the replacement should be done in a multi-brand company, in Vw they do not accept spare parts by customers , and I think it is much more expensive . You have tips, advice ?

Funny of all the Passat TDI I work on the only issue I saw was the chain tensioner wore out and actually made a small hole in the front crank seal cover and there was an oil leak . replace the tensioner and the chain and sprocket were like new and this car had like at least 300 000 km's the only thing that I see with theses engines is the cam lobes will eventually wear out but they are way better than the BRM engine the engine to look for with ballencer shaft module issues is the any FSI engine the timing belt type I'm starting to see a trend I think is if a car has a blown lifter for the fuel pump then this car is a good candidate for a worn balancer shaft module I'm talking the actual shaft get loose in the aluminum housing and then you get a low oil pressure. I think all the metal particules floating in the oil wear the balancer shaft.

I've got a pretty serious vibration going on with my B5 TDI Wagon. It is noticeable in Park and Neutral, with Neutral producing slightly less vibration. But when in Drive and stopped at a light, it is like one of those coin operated bbbbb-beds you find in cheap hotels. I was told by a VW mechanic that it was "probably" the balance shaft. Call me apprehensive, but I would like more than a "probably" before I go spending $3-4K on a repair. You described a huge rattle coming from the front portion of the engine. Would it sound like a metal on metal sound, like a chain slapping or gears slipping, etc? The only rattle I hear is the rattling of the door and dash components. What causes me to question the mechanic is that the vibration completely goes away when I increase the idle. Currently the car idles at about 800 RPM. If I steady the pedal and hold at about 1,100-1,200 RPM, the vibration is gone. When in gear, and I let off the brake it is nearly gone. When I accelerate down the road, it disappears and performs and sounds normal. At stop lights, I have to put it in Park or Neutral to keep my hands from going numb. I replaced an axle upon the advice of a VW mechanic after his initial diagnosis. Later, I replaced the transmission mounts resulting in a slight improvement. The non-VW mechanic who performed this indicated that the motor mounts are due to be replaced as well, and that it would likely solve the problem. I am hesitant to do anything at this point until I can hone in on a more definite cause. Would I be way off base to think that it is transmission related; as if it's constantly trying to engage and the torque is causing the vibration?

Is this exclusive only to diesel or is it common in TSIs too? Cause. I have 2012 VW CC with 140k and the oil pressure light just started to blink and I don't know what to do. If it helps, the engine jerks off a bit when I first start it. Also recently I sprayed a CRC intake valve and turbo cleaner through the air intake at 135k. + Usually I use liqui moly 2041 every 5k but I decided to try out liqui moly 4100 last time since only difference is, 2041 is only for petrol engines and 4100 is petrol and diesel according to liqui moly customer service. The engine does show signs of an oil leak but it doesn't seem excessive.

+Harley Landsbergs I completely disagree with Humble. The only advantage to using a DMF on an ALH is less noise at idle. The SMF handles more power, is generally trouble free for many miles and has a lighter pedal feel. They are also far less expensive.

It this the one you talk about in your video? I have 150k on the car. I have replaced all the normal maint items, a cam, a fuel pump, timimg belts etc. Seems like endless thousands of bucks. I’m not sure if those parts are available. You can replace the balance shaft module or or a balance shaft delete.

Hey mate, or anyone for that matter. Trying my very very best to find a BMR workshop manual, or at least torque specs for balance shaft module and sump re-installation and can't for the life of me find it. Anyone have any reliable sources or have software they can use to look it up for me?

bought a b6 passat for around $6600 and 8 months later the horrific "low oil pressure, turn engine off" sign appeared. The auto repair shop demanded $4600(!) to repair it, so that was a no go.

Yeah the Passat might not be the most common wagon but let me tell you there are Bazzillions of balance shafts on all 2.0 tdi VW Audi Skoda, and they are all waitting to blow on some dudes hands. Im currently at 157000km on my Audi 2.0 BLB, crossing my fingers and praying to the balance shaft gods to hold up them a few more km untill i get my delete kit.

That's what I meant. Long day haha. My Mon has a 2004 Passat TDI. When she is stopped at a stop light, there is a lot of vibration. My Dad thinks it's the drive shaft. But I would think that the drive shaft would be an issue when you are driving and not stopped.
