How The VW 2.0T FSI Fuel Pump HPFP Fails

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How VW 2.0t FSI (BPY engine) fails. This was a really common problem issue a few years ago. Failure of the HPFP, the cam follower, as well as the cam shaft. This can cause a check engine light, fault codes, and the car to run poorly

Wow this is on point. I just put my 08 Passat KOMFORT WAGEN in the shop for the exact problem. However the dealer said that because it was so severe, they also had to replace the cam, timing components and the head. When my pump failed due to the cam follower, parts of the spring had broken off and caused extreme engine damage. It sounded horrible. Thx for posting.

Thanks Humble Mechanic, all great/very helpful videos. my question is: once the cam follower wears through, where do the little metal parts that wore off end up going? the cam follower metal flakes/hpfp spring retainer? where does this stuff go? into the engine? if mine was covered under extended warranty, should I be concerned that I have metal flakes floating around in my engine?

Thanks very much for your Top 5 Failures video; it brought me here. I've a 2011 CC 2.0T (standard CC) from the Top 5 Failure video I thought you are talking of ALL 2006-2011 TSI 2.0T engines. @2011 has INDIRECT INJECTION; watching this video you speak of DIRECT INJECTION. Easy enough to believe that the same problem exists for indirect AND direct. Not yet seen in my hand a camshaft, but to look at this and other videos the HPFP cam lobe appears to be a separate part removable from the end of the camshaft (certainly well attached/shrunk and with key, perhaps end keeper (not seen?) ?Can one change camshaft HPFP lobe while camshaft remains?

Mine failed, vw Canada does not have a warranty extension for this issue. The retention nib on the hpfp was starting to get worn through, the camshaft seemed fine so I replaced the pump and the follower. Gunna check on it in 2000 km or so to see if the follower is still in good shape.

I know I may be going out on a limb here, but would you say there is any permanent solution to this cam follower catastrophe? I find that checking my cam follower periodically could cause future damage to the pump bolts by wearing out the threads and removing the bolt from the banjo head fuel line isn't quite fun. I also have been doing some research and I found that there is a "2.0TSI roller cam conversion" for the "FSI"models. Would you say it's any good?

My 2005 golf gti had a power lost problem while driving at 160km/h, I have checked the cam follower and it completely broken, then I changed the cam follower and I still had the power lost problem. After a month I bought a brand new HPFP, when I tried to replace the pump and I found that the cam follower was broken again in only 500km. Finally, I changed the pump and the cam follower but the car still losing power at 180km. Do you think the camshaft need to replace as well?

  • @Mosstachio

My 2013 golf R had a fuel pressure code that went away after I replaced the fuel filter. Around 5 days later the light came back on, took it to the dealership same day, had no power suddenly. Turned out the cam follower got jammed in the housing, tore up the cam shaft, cam shaft ate the fuel pump through the spring retainer, and as far down the shaft as it could basically. Luckily I had just gotten the vehicle a couple months prior, and my gf talked me into getting the warranty 😅

Bad dealership though. They knew the follower had a lot of wear when they replaced the intake manifold (runner flap control arm was snapped off, requiring whole manifold to be replaced), and they said nothing about it and did nothing about it. They also didn't even change the oil after they replaced the cam follower housing, fuel pump, and camshaft. They definitely didn't take it apart a bit further to remove the metal scraps that were ground off either.

thanks for the explanation. question: should I lube the outside of the new cam follower in oil, or would you suggest assembly paste? and should the inside of the cam follower (making contact with the HPFP) be dry?

You can use assembly lube or engine oil for assembly. None of the parts that aren’t visible after installed should ever go in dry. It wouldn’t hurt to lube whole plunger assembly and HPFP O ring that seals into the pump slot.

Hi, cool video very helpful. I recently purchased an Audi a4 2006 2.0T Quattro. The check engine light come on with code P0089. The mechanic who happens to be a german auto specialist at the initial stage said he checked the hpfp and cam follower cam shaft and it looked fine. They replaced the sensor on the hpfp, after a day the light came back on same code. Now he said its that hpfp. I can notice the car does have a little hesitation from idle and if you gently press the accelerator it jumps to second gear. I was told this is normal as its a turbo i dnt notice power reduction the car has power but it does have a slightly louder noise than normal. I am going in next week to replace hpfp and cam follower. What are your thoughts. And also are fsi engines louder i went to audi and test drove a audi a4 2012 and it sounds like my 2006 but a little quieter. Thanks

It takes 15 minutes to replace, the cam follower was ok (repalced it anyway), the pump just crapped out. If the follower is failing there is much more going on, i.e. junk camshaft. The new followers are titanium, and the aftermarket pumps will kill a stock camshaft, so be careful...

It did this for a few days, and then today, about 10 times. Today was the first day it threw the P0089 engine code. It will lose power while accelerating then recovers after a few seconds. Basically scaring the crap out of you at highway speeds. This could be the [fuel control module] located under the rear seat cushion on the in-tank fuel pump. These modules tend to overheat if they are old, heat and a dirty fuel filter can contribute to this problem, as well as leaking or restricted fuel supply lines from the in-tank pump to the filter, or from the filter to the HPFP. You may also have a dirty strainer on the in-tank low pressure pump. After removing the seat cushion and inspecting, if you decide to replace the in tank pump, control module, and filter, I would siphon the tank, put a few gallons of water in the tank so that you have a good amount to flush the crap out. I use a paint mixing bit on a power drill to swirl the water and mild detergent soap inside the tank, siphon to water out and wipe the tank clean, allow it to dry before adding clean premium fuel, and change the fuel filter. The filter has 3 hoses, one hose you will notice a blue ring or tab on the fitting, if you depress that tab (pushing it in)while pulling straight out, the fittings pop right off. For the one fitting on the out side of the filter you would need to release the bracket holding the filter so that you can access the tab, otherwise it's at the top of the fitting and hard to see.

Hey! I have an automatic 2010 VW CC with 108K miles on it. My check engine light recently came on and I got a diagnosis and it coded P2015 "Intake manifold runner position sensor/switch circuit range/performance bank 1". Afterwards, my engine also began to stall and shut off and right before it would shut off the battery icon would pop up on the dash. I replaced the battery and I am still having this issue with the car stalling and shutting off. Sometimes I have to get a jump in order to get it moving, sometimes getting a jump doesn't work at all. Is this a common issue or something that you have seen before? If so how do I go about getting it fixed and about how much do you thing it would cost me?

Hey Charles big fan. I had a check engine light on my 2.0T FSI for P12A2 Fuel rail pressure sensor. After making some other repairs like torn pcv and diverter valve as well as coils and spark plugs, the code has gone away. Is there any need for me to check the cam follower if I have no check engine lights? The car was not taken care of before I bought it.

Paul1PA Check your thrust sensor. And also check the cam follower... could very well be worn at only 50k miles especially if it is an early revision part. Mine was really bad I had to replace the cam, fuel pump, follower, and other parts that I decided to replace while I was in there .

im lost on what to do already,, my Jetta 2007 2.0T FSI A/T cant start now, it used to have a cold start initially now it cant turn on anymore. i have replaced the fuel pump (inside tank) no change, i have checked the Cam follower even the old one was still quite good, i also replaced the G410 sensor, and today i even replaced a brand new HPFP. and still cant start the car, only cranks. it seems that there isnt fuel pressure with new or old HPFP, i am getting P310B/P310B/012555 error code (only code) with my OBD II, but i do not get any check engine lights i have not buy a new fuel pump control module, as i cant see any damage on it, and it doesnt feel hot as mentioned on the other video..

hi, I have a 2008 jetta 2.0t tsi cbfa .I have replaced the hpfp the lpfp the fuel pressure sensor the intake manifold the pcv .but it is shutting off on me (the car that is). if I loosen the 17mm nut on the fuel line to release the pressure in the fuel rail the car will start only for a short time and then shuts off. It also has that cherpping sound coming from the engine bay. do you have any idea what it might be? I'm thinking the fuel injectors or a vacuum leak .

Have you guys ever seen the HPFP push air into the fuel system from the seal on the back where the plunger goes in and out. There is a seal back there. I keep getting air from the port on the low pressure side of the HPFP. No air bubbles from the lines before it goes into the pump. There is also no fuel in the return line? I tried bleeding it for a long time but air keeps coming?

I have a p0089 code saying fuel pressure regulator, could this be the cause? 2006 A3 2.0t, I just checked and the black paint is worn off the follower, I'll replace that but do I need to replace the regulator that sits under the tank? Soo many chats about this code and people just replacing pumps and filters with no solution. Any feedback is appreciated.

Dealing with one in my shop now. 225k b7 blown engine. Replaced with salvage engine. One problem after another. Sent us bad engine, then sent us wrong engine code, swapped parts to accommodate. Start it up, chsin slap.... and p0016. Replaced chain, tensioner, etc. Then.....it starts, runs rough and only has 200 psi rail, while asking for 700 at idle. Needless to say idles rough. Low pressure pump in spec at 90 psi. How does the hpfp fail in this case? This engine has a banjo on the low pressure feed and looks about impossible to get off in the audi quattro configuration.

Hi Charles, are you aware of any HP/Mechanical Fuel Pump related issues with mk7.5 GTI? One of the two bolts that hold the HPFP in place on my 2019 GTI has some how disappeared. Gone! I noticed this after the HPFP started making noise. I know these things vibrate a lot, but I am still a bit skeptical that the bolt was able to vibrate loose past the engine cover on it's own. Have you even heard anything like this before? Maybe the dealerships now check the HPFP, and maybe during my 20,000 mile service the tech forgot to put the bolt back? Now I am concerned that the driving done with only a single bolt holding the HPFP in place could have caused damage to the Follower or Cam.
