How The Suns Built The Worst Superteam Ever

Спорт

When the Phoenix Suns acquired Kevin Durant, and later on - Bradley Beal....the expectation is to win the championship right away. With a roster of 3 players making over 50 million a year, they've severely handicapped themselves, and it was apparent as they got swept by a superior team. This is how the Suns built the NBA's worst superteam.

KD wouldn't be a good fit. Minnesota is about development. Also, say what you will about his legacy, it would tarnish his legacy playing under ANT and KAT. But... KD would bring 30+pts most games. That would be a guaranteed 80+ most games from ANT, KAT and KD. Gobert pushing 20+. And they actaully play defense. ANT would be the only guy under 6'11 lol

Once you pay a qb 45/yr+ million or a reciever 30+ million….the clock is ticking. With the “Stepian rule” in place how can the Suns have no picks for 6 years? The Stepian rule keeps teams from trading draft picks over consecutive years. They can swap draft position with other teams, but that just changes there draft positioning with the team they traded with. So the Suns definitely have a 1st round pick every other year until 2030, but they will be swaps. Which means the Suns will draft in the position of the team they traded with, and the team they traded with will draft in the Suns position if it’s a better pick, hence a swap.

Any general manager worth their salt creating a super team needs to only have 2 main scorer while the third star is the unselfish, creative or defensive superstar. Having 3 score first stars is foolish. I would sell Kd. Beal is expensive but younger. Worth keeping.

The trade for Nurkic and Allen for Ayton i could live with (Allen was very good this regular season), however the Beal trade was an absolute gut punch. CP3 whilst not perfect was a far better fit and easier to move given his contract size and it being non-guaranteed. Now the got 2+1 years of Bradley Beal left with his no trade clause still lurking. It was one of the worst contract in the NBA when they traded for it and probably is the worst right now !

Even the wolves last year without 2 of their best 6 players at least took 1 game from Denver lol getting swept gotta lead to changes Beal may have a no trade but he'd 100% agree to a trade as long as its not to a bad team. But really they should move kd to try to add a few pieces plus some picks for the future if they run it back book gonna eventually want out

Another good example of super teams with multiple super star players doesn't mean guaranteed success, Basketball is a team sport and everyone need to adjust to fit the roles in order to win, The Suns and the Lakers, and many other teams that's been considered as super teams have failed again and again, until they figured out how to co-operate with their teammates.

That's where I have a problem with modern basketball. In the 90s and late 2000s, even role players did both defense and some offense. Where now the socres can shoot 3s to make up for some guys not even scoring. Playing both sides is tough, and only doing half your job isn't fun to watch.

Itll come down too if booker can figure out how to be a point guard and we figure out how to utilize beal. Its bleak. Booker has gotten better every year of his career but this was the first season where he couldnt step up his game to be a full time PG. My guess is since the Suns are all in anyway the plan is this team will sink or swim based on Booker trying to become Harden 2.0 There really isnt much else we can do. The Suns have two firsts they can trade on draft night. They have Nassir Little's 6m/yr salary, they have Nurkic and Allen both making around 18m/yr. They wont get first pick of vet mins like last season, its gonna be really tough. Suns fans know our era died after that humilating Mavs 2nd round exit game 7. Once CP3 fell off and our team chemistry never recovered we went all in for KD, it made sense as we didnt believe in Bridges becoming the #2 guy. KD was the best player we could of ever dreamed to get, he fit too. Our team just wasnt good enough. Then we got Beal, the best possible talent for CP3. If we didnt sell CP3 we would be dealing with declining his player option right now and having to decide what to do to overpay a quickly declining player or lose that cap space that you cant get back. Beal doesnt look good on the team because Booker isnt Harden, and we also play another guard Grayson Allen whos forced to be a small ball 3. KD can handle a wing and Nurkic is good for some matchups but after that it's pretty miserable for us. I think we will sell our picks again and package it with Nassir Little to get a backup wing and center and then gamble again on the remains of the vet mins. Then at the deadline sell Grayson depending on his performance

KD teams always have the same problem, they stack up scoring talent but not actual team depth, that only worked on GS because it was already a 73-9 win team and in all honesty that NBA was not close to as deep as this NBA is, if he didn’t get as greedy with wanting harden on his team back in 21 then he would’ve won another ring, this suns team just needed to get more depth not Bradley Beal.

They sent a bunch of pick swaps to Washington, which just means the Wizards have the option to substitute the Suns' pick for their own in 2024, 2026, and 2030 (assuming the Suns end up with a better pick in any of those years). 2028 is a little more complicated, but they have a first-round pick that year as well

No, the main guy for wolves defense is not Gobert, is McDaniels, it can be named triangle defense with the wolves it's kinda unique what they do, it has the essence of zone defense but only part of the roster plays zone, they will always have one big and two perimetre defenders on court, most of the time it's Ant McDaniels and Gobert, but they also have KAT and Slomo to play centre (Slomo against small ball), and they have Alexander-Walker who is very good too, Gobert on the wolves players rather different than when he was on Jazz, he doesn't have to choose between stay under the hoop or pushing outside to the three point line, there are always two good denders outside so Gobert only need to take care of the inside, and he is much more free to push against mid-range shots because there will always be good rebounders taking care of the space he gave up, like a FIBA style zone arms are moved in unit not individually, Gobert covers a big enough air space but not all, that's what centres do in FIBA defense, always team defense first, centres taking care of the ones perimeter failed to stop, but if you don't have outside great defense, centres do nothing. Just look at his rebounding numbers, he is dropping comparing to Utah but if you watch the game you will feel like he got a lot more, because there are less offensive rebound lost. Gobert is never good enough to be a one man stopper, he is not Dwight Howard, and with the wolves he doesn't have to be, which works for him and for the team, this not-technically zone defense is what he needs and what the team need off him.

If you look at first two games of series the stats were identical except for turnovers (Suns have no point guards to create and dish to all those scorers. This leads to horrible shot selection). Second free throws. Minnesota makes upper 80percent even 90 percent of their free throws. They play D rebound, shoot high percentage so they can set there defense, and they run offensive sets like professional basketball players.
