How the Past Prepared Me for Van Life

Ойын-сауық

Sometimes life’s difficulties become life’s blessings. I recently received a comment about my “soft life.” Life has not always been that way for me. In today’s video I share a bit of my history and how I believe growing up poor was a gift to me. I believe each moment is a choice and that on some level we create our lives… the good and the perceived not so good.

Bev, *thank you*. Your childhood belief of “There’s barely enough” hit home HARD, and I hadn’t really thought about how much that belief affects me so many decades later when really, I’m in a position where there IS enough. I’m going to have to put some real thought into how to fix that belief myself.

It's always jarring when someone is visibly offended by how I'm living. Thankfully it doesn't happen often. I love engaging them so they get the full story and their perspective usually shifts pretty quickly. I'd say in most of those cases their animosity is rooted in their own sense of life bondage and discontent. They feel so trapped, (and may actually be), by the consequences of their decisions. Seeing someone so free and vital really shines a light on their unhappiness. So, my heart really goes out to them. Educating people on the difference between being a live aboard/nomad by choice vs being forced into it, is always an important conversation to have with people who see anyone who lives like this as homeless. I can certainly relate to lots of your story. It's an inspirational and valuable share. Thank you Bev 🙏

Great video! You have earned your “soft” life. Your dad sounds like a mirror image of my older brother. He was always rescuing family and friends and sometimes strangers with broken down vehicles… rarely charging them. He never left home without a small crescent wrench and a pair of pliers in his back pocket in case someone needed help. When he passed my sister-in-law asked me what I wanted of his, you guessed it, that crescent wrench and pliers sit on a table in my home office. I don’t carry them with me because I don’t have the skill set he did.

I get you. I was raised in a poor family of 12 kids. We learn from an very early age how to work hard and save our money. Most of us kids had 2 job (paper route & babysitting). Once we turned 16 we started working in restaurants or jobs at the mall. All of us kids went to college, which we payed for our self. After college, we all worked hard and saved our money. Luxuries weren’t something we were accustomed to so living smart & saving money was important to all of us. Today, all 12 of us kids have a very soft life. Family First!

Bev … what a life you have lived! One to be so proud of & all you’ve accomplished. Thank you for sharing❣️I decided to start ‘van life’ in my Kia Sportage which allowed me to take early retirement. My parents died at ages 62 & 64 & I’ve lost more than a few good friends & relatives from illnesses over the past few years. This made me realize that none of us know how much time we have in this life. Why work until 70 and THEN retire??? You might not even make it to that age. I worked very hard but was fortunate during my career to be able to travel in Europe & other lovely places but there are so many places I haven’t seen in the US! So I’m living & traveling now in a very low cost way to see everything this amazing country has to offer. I’d like to get a van one day, but so far I’m doing just fine with my mid-sized SUV! Your story is so inspiring! Be well Bev & safe travels. I hope to see you at Fredrock in early September with Jonnie❣️

I love how you took the criticism and used it as the motivation to basically explain that choices have consequences - If you work hard and think things out as you go you can make anything happen - Most of the people who take the time to write a critical comment (oh by do I get them) are unhappy people who never seem to reflect on life's challenges to see the opportunities presented to them. It's always "woe is me", like they enjoy wallowing in misery. Life is 10% "crap" happens and 90% how you deal with it. A positive mindset and attitude can carry you through anything. Every challenge is an opportunity to make a change for the better if you chose to see it that way. When you take the time to listen to some of these people (my family is like this) it becomes very clear that they are usually just making excuses and never taking personal responsibility for the decisions that put them into the circumstances they find themselves in.

I'm glad you shared your journey in life. You are a very intelligent woman. You can never have too much knowledge. We have lived in some of the same places. I worked in Dallas and eventually moved to Houston. I don't have children but I've always had a single income. I liked nice things but always tried to live below my means. Life changed as my Mom had cancer and then Dad needed help. Huge cut in pay but I kept on working. Mom passed but I took care of Dad 16 1/2 years. Then I had health issues where I couldn't work - plowed through savings fast. I wanted so much to be able to travel and get a van. Unfortunately, it's not feasible now. I have a roof over my head and I'm grateful. We never know what life will hand us but we need to choose to be happy

I started living in a gmc canyon 4 years ago for financial reasons. I got used to it and while researching ways to make it more livable discovered van life on youtube. The rest is history. I have the 1999 version of your van, we connected briefly about it in the comments of one of your past videos. I continue to make upgrades to the vehicle itself while I work local and have actually begun to "convert". So far: Webasto gas heater, Maxx fan deluxe, Jackery 500 with solar panel and a roll away AC exhausted out one of my slider windows (I have shore power where I park) I love your honesty and realness. People always want to judge a book by its cover but you need to read the story.... ✌️❤️ and Vanlife !!

I've led a similar life to yours in that I've had opportunities to work in different fields in mostly great jobs (2 exceptions), always making more so I could pay debt or have a better lifestyle. I've lived in the same cities and was also a single mother working 2 and 3 jobs to make it. When my boys were grown I had work that took me all around the globe into luxury I could never afford on my own. HOWEVER, unlike you, it takes me more than once to learn a hard lesson. I'm a senior retired lady now and am recovering once again from some poor financial decisions. But somehow it always worked out and I now believe I can create my happy endings. I'm working now to smooth out the bumps in my life and have found new inspiration from you and a couple of other youtubers. Thank you for sharing your life with us viewers. You are a blessing, Bev.

You worked hard for what you have and what you accomplished. I have too and also have a "soft life". ( whatever that means) I've taught my kids to save, pay debts off quickly . Anyone can do it...if they really want it. One son spends as soon as he gets it..the other listened to my wisdom.... he's young and has a nest egg already, never pays interest on credit cards, doesn't need the latest and greatest things. People who claim they can't do it or criticize you for having a "soft life" need to look in the mirror and say I Can Do It if I really want it. ❤👍

I must say Bev, You dear are a very well rounded person with a great outlook on life. You are business savvy, a woman whom has worked hard to get where she is at, at this point in her life. You mentioned that along the way you had the good fortune of catching a few lucky breaks which in turn helped to form a mentality to "just go for it" things will always work out. I believe these not to be lucky breaks, but more because of the fact that you made them happen because you are driven, and with this mentality you put yourself into the right place at the right time, this is how people get ahead. Anyways, you have every right to enjoy your "soft life" not only because you have put in the effort, and hard work to get there, but more important you're a smart lady whom is bestowed with good values learned from your parents, you paid your dues, and you enjoy life to the fullest. Anyone else whom says different is jealous, and just full of sour grapes!

You did have riches growing up. Awesome parents, aunts, uncles and cousins. A close-knit community. Those are priceless. Money is useful, but it's a cheap substitute for family. The van life isn't necessarily an either/or decision. It can be both financially driven, but happily embraced. I just watch a TedTalk that said people are indoors 93 % of their day. Vanlife is sunshine, fresh air, nature and getting out and meeting others. It's lots of exercise, by necessity in a tiny space, LOL. I think your pretty decor choices can strike some as lavish. But it could easily be achieved on a budget. Law of attraction will bring you more lovers than haters, cause you radiate positivity. Feel their pain, but know it's not on you to fix them. You encourage many of us. Keep on being you. Everything you do is good. We learn from our mistakes. It just takes some of us a looong time. 🥰

Thank you for being so open about how you live. I bought a van a couple of years ago and have taken several trips. I still have a house payment but no other debt. I have been considering renting my home a month at a time. Where I live the rent would be 3 times my house payment. The extra could help pay off my house sooner. I can not tell you how much you have encouraged me to follow my dreams even if I am 71. My health is excellent so I best enjoy my life! Thank you again Bev.

Wow! What an interesting life!. This is the first video I've watched of yours so I am not familiar with your van but it looks so cozy and beautiful in the background. Thanks for sharing your story and not rambling and going off track. I never lost interest. You deserve all of your success and "soft" life. You paid your dues. A lot of people don't understand that you either pay now or later. So many people don't want to work hard when they are young and want to just go off and live in a van but if they haven't worked for years, they will pay for it when they are 70 years old. I just retired and I get some smart remarks about having money but I worked all my life for it. I too only know how to work hard but oh well. Better safe than sorry. Since you have worked so hard, I know you want your daughter to have more but please teach her the same values and don't just hand things to her or she will struggle later in life. Enjoy your van life!

As many of your videos...this one is a blessing... sometimes people are jealous of others...they don't see the years of sacrifice people take to attain their dreams...you were very sweet and gracious...to that person's answer ...as so you needed to explain yourself and you really don't it's really actually nobody's business... We all get the opportunity to make choices in our lives and the person that type that message to you probably hasn't made or understand how to make or research how you did or even work hard enough to understand that their choices could make a soft life as well..... I was homeless once I understand how rough life can be and I also was married to a dentist .....I also had a good life can be... I was married for 15 years and gave him three kids and we worked very hard to have a good life.... I have no regrets I have three amazing kids and I currently am working towards a better life so that I can travel just like you 😃

Hi Bev, I am about to retire, and will be travelling around Australia, doing sections at a time. I am keeping my property in the country as my home base, because, for me, I think this is important, in case of illness, etc. I also want to be able to rest and plan my next trip, then go and enjoy it. I need to plan ahead, because I do travel with my dogs. I am choosing to travel in my van for lifestyle, rather than necessity. I have worked hard all my adult life, and have saved hard, now I get to enjoy. To that person having a go at you, I say this …… if we do not knock you, don’t knock us!!! We all live at different levels, and we live accordingly …… no-one is better than anyone else ……. Stay positive, and good luck to everyone!!😌

Of all the episodes you’ve done-This is my favorite!! I’ve known you for over 20 years but somehow never knew many of the parts of your story that truly describe how you “Became Bev!” I feel so blessed to know you and to have known you for all these years. You’ve helped change my life for the better so many times through your wize counsel, humor, honesty and by example of how to live abundantly. (No matter the circumstances that show up in life) . I don’t have the words to really say how much I appreciate our friendship (especially since I’m so much older than you)! You are just an incredible human being. Thank you for being my friend and for all the joy you’ve brought into my life! ❤️🤗🙏🌈

Agreed. This is the best video she's ever done. Very inspiring. I'm just shocked that I was the one who instigated it. You're lucky to have her as a close friend. She's got soul.
