In terms of the Joe/Beezy critical mass combo discussion. I think at the power level you're discussing there's a certain kind of value engine deck (that Beezy likes) with individually low threat/power cards for the most part that can quickly escalate threat level when certain cards come together. They also tend to have a lot of redundancy without focusing on combo/protection for the combo. So as another player I'm not incentivized to use removal on Beezy until it's almost too late and I think it requires changes in play philosophy. There's a KZread video somewhere about the 3 wizards riddle/paradox. Basically in a multiplayer FFA setting (not just Magic) there's incentives to reduce perceived threat level, so in a social setting where everybody is a bit powered down adding a low immediate threat but ultimately inevitable win might be the optimal strategy in that setting

Going to agree here. One of my friends has noted this for a couple of my decks. My Prismari and Rashmi decks both have a level of combo assembly to them, but they’re not as obvious most of the time. That means I can usually afford time to stay in the game, drawing into future solutions and whatnot such that when it is time to go off, it’s possible to take on the whole table at that point. Getting pressured early can make that harder, and so he tends to focus me if there’s not a more obvious imminent threat, and I think this notion of being able to seem more innocuous but being able to represent the potential of a threat / annoyance factor can be a huge boon to winning or riding out to a close second place in many tiers of play.

Wow, this has got to be one of my fav episodes you guys did! Really really good content :) One of my "restrictions" that I have is that regardless of powerlevel each deck has exactly 2 tutors (not including Land tutors). It really helps with reducing the risk of getting "stuck" at a point where my deck does nothing, but it's not so many that it would be making me tutor for the same thing every time. It has worked pretty well for me so far :)

Great episode! On the "restriction" category, I feel this is the best way to brew in general. One of my favourite restrictions is "no instant speed", so everything in your deck has to only be usable at sorcery speed. Makes for some fun gameplay, and forces you to use lots of lesser-played cards, particularly when it comes to interaction.

Always appreciate your content. I think one aspect of Commander that is so tenuous is the fun-o-meter. Everyone comes to the table with nuanced expectations. One's philosophy or approach is different from another's. I'd like to see you guys approach a Rule Zero conversation in a systematic way, if that's possible. Expectations, compromises, mutual agreements. I know a lot of Rule Zero content is out there, and Lynch does a fairly good job of modeling it on IHYD, but if there's one out there that lays out a patterns of A, B. C, D . . . I haven't seen it. Thanks again!

glad you guys seem to be evolving. Typically my decks are at power peak after the second or third iteration. After finding what makes them powerful and what most people would do with them I try to identify what I enjoyed the most from it and then cut the rest. Personally I try to make the mana as close to ideal as possible, some decks ie Karn need sol ring /mana crypt this doesn't make them cedh though. I don't run tutors and If a card feels bad or wins too easily I cut it. I don't win often especially at competitive tables but I always have fun and rarely make enemies.

Congrats on your ressurection. Personally i start with a commander i like the look of, find some synergies and build in some win cons. Then when i play test it i try and move it up or down depending on my plans, free interaction and such seems to make the biggest difference. I also only use one of each card in all my decks other than mana production, so most of the big power cards are in Kess so my others don't have all the staple counterspells etc.

I think one point is often missed: no matter how powerful your deck is (when played optimally), if you don’t enjoy playing it, you’re not going to win as often as when playing a deck that is a bit less powerful, because you WON’T end up playing the powerful deck optimally.

  • @pauldyson8098

The restrictions point is spot-on. I have a Sythis deck with no artifacts (not even Sol Ring or S. Tithe, which makes artifacts). Not only does this allow me to run Stony Silence with impunity, but I feel like it's a true enchantress deck. I'm also big on building in a Plan B in my decks: Siona in Sigarda, Stonybrook Schoolmaster as backup commander in Emmara. I feel like that's less annoying that running tone of tutors. I do love redundancy. I blame it on twenty years of playing 60-card formats.

Great wisdom delivered well. I disagree with one point. I own every card (99%)... Building a 'CEDH' level 9+ deck is the WORST Restriction you can put on yourself. It restricts the amount of fun you can have, since instead of building for fun you are forced to play with all the 'samey' fully optimized specific answers and win conditions. Great video, Nerds!!

I had one question about the mana curve, If your commander is a CMC 3, with you avoid loading up on other 3 drops and lean on more 2 or 4 drops with similar effects. Or does this just depend on what the commander actually does and whether or not you want it out asap. I haven't been able to find a ton of information regarding mana curve and where your commander cast falls on the curve and building around that.

I actually play a Stuffy Doll Focused deck too! I only used demonic tutor and vamiric tutor to lower the curve a bit because the rest of the deck is basically mono-red and not super broken. It definitely needs to help since it runs a single Tibalts Trickery and chaos warp for interaction. I run Obosh as the commander and a I abuse the interaction with damage doublers + Stuffy Doll/Brash Taunter/Ill-tempered Loner + damage to dish out insane dps. Fiery Confluence + Brash Taunter + chain lightning is the shizz, since you can pay R for 27 damage, then RR again for any number of additional 27 damage. Nevermind any additional doublers, Toralf/Repercussion, or other nonsense.

Big comment on Moxfield: the best thing about it that is criminally underused even by the Nerds is tags. Categorizing your deck by sorcery, instant, ect is the trap that edhrec falls into. I have people at my LGS who build a deck and say "I put in 5 artifacts like edhrec said to" not looking at what the cards do. We need to normalize tagging all your cards and categorizing, "here are my 12 ramp cards", "here are my 10 removal cards", here are my wincons, board wipes, draw spells, ect.

If you don't have Lord Windgrace, I'd suggest him. Discarding lands for cards, reanimating them, and a removal + token making ultimate. Can't go wrong with this value engine. Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait is another suggestion. He's my lands deck commander, he allows extra land drops, and draws a card per landfall trigger. Tatyova is a 2nd copy that is smaller in size and cmc. Along with Lord Windgrace, you'll often have a full hand. Exploration, Sakura Tribe Scout, Dryad of the Ilsyian Grove, Skyshroud Ranger, Uro, and Growth Spasm can ensure multiple land drops per turn, ensuring your win condition sets up a few turns quicker. Hope this helps you.

@@nickhughes8179 thanks, I hadn't thought about windgrace. It is quite a low power deck at the moment, plays well against the Zendikar and Kaldheim precons though (just as comparison). But doesn't stand up against one friends Atraxa, lol. I left out Aesi, but upon thinking I have a spare omnath locus of creation lying around I could drop in. I have a few land tutors to get the mazes end. But my main strategy is to flicker Niv mizzen reborn to get the gates into my hand to play. He's really a great commander for the mazes end win con. The game play is a bit samey but was fun build to try and make use of some cheap cards and those gates.

Planeswalkers, Infect, Counters/Proliferate, 4 color good stuff, Voltron, or Control??

I don't use infinite combos or instant tutors for decks in my home pod. This helps to limit power levels, because you have to actually draw your combo pieces. That being said, every turn counts. By limitations, I have seen many games come down to one turn, which is pretty fun.

In reference to the tutors, I really like tutors that stick creatures in your graveyard. I really enjoy playing with the graveyard because it feels to me like I'm using something not meant to be a resource as my main resource, and it makes it so I can cheat into play the things I tutor. However, I don't feel like it's unfair because whatever I tutor is vulnerable and not too difficult to get rid of if anyone casually runs grave hate.

Totally agrees with Beezy there about playing 4 or 5 colors deck, I had this powerful atraxa deck I used to play, at first it feels really fun, but as time goes, there are more and more auto include staple cards to put in the deck, it does make the deck becomes more powerful, but it is no longer the deck I loved to play. Now the deck is just forever in my deckbox untouched, I'd much rather play my janky decks LOL.

What is fast mana? Does this mean all ramp like Charcoal Diamond and Cultivate as well? Also if it does include these things the like slower ramp cards then what are your plans to replace them? Are you doing like half get replaced with lands and half with spells or just what kind of combination do you look at when doing that? Just really interested in that cause it does seem better as there is quite a difference between those that do and don't hit their Sol Rings so just seems like more fair magic and enjoyable. I just wanted to know what the line was with fast mana and how you define it as well as what you look at when replacing those cards, if its just a what ever fits type thing for the deck, or more of a template change on deck building like "these give me mana and help me stay on curve so with them gone so much of that need to convert to land to make sure those are hit more often".

I also prefer 3 and fewer color decks, I really prefer mine to be super focused, and I end up feeling a lot better about my deck the more synergy there is. I love my Mazirek deck, because it cares about sacrificing all permanents and I’m playing very few staples. Card draw is easier to customize, but I love when I can 100% synergize my ramp and not auto include Nature’s Lore, Three Visits, Wood Elves, and Skyshroud Claim.

I think this was a very needed video - it's way too easy to fall into the optimization/power loop. Even if one isn't exactly trying to build cEDH decks, it can quickly become a bit stagnant and repetitive - and there are a lot of videos out there about BiS cards/precon optimization etc. (your own videos included). I think this is the first video I saw, that even touched on the factor of self-control, regarding the amount and placement of all these powerful staples - which I think is a realization a lot of us has reached on our own. Honestly one of the most 'MUST WATCH' videos from you =) Next up! - does the community need to reconsider the usage of the word jank/janky? It's used about so many different powerlevels, that it has become an irrelevant term. Not to mention that it kinda subconsciously translates to 'crappy' - which certainly isn't how I would describe a deck, that I have used like 20 hours researching and building for maximum fun/synergies - just because it's powerlevel 4-6.

Right now I'm working on a Kaladesh deck, it's gotta be Saheeli the Gifted and/or Zara Renegade Recruiter... but I don't know if I want or can even afford Masterpieces to have the appropriate Kaladesh artworks :') Does anybody know of "playable" Kaladesh cards that aren't from the Origins, Kaladesh, nor Aether Revolt sets?

My 5 color deck is ur dragon which pretty easily keeps its identity since I'm running something like 33 dragons. Even mana ramp has 2 dragon specific options dragons horde and orb of dragonkind. Dragon specific board wipe in crux of fate. It's just a fun big stompy deck. The only real staples it's running are in ramp and removal. I agree otherwise about more colors meaning it's hard for a deck to have it's own identity that sets it apart from other decks. 3 colors is a great sweetspot since each excludes certain gameplans and specializes in others.

I bet you make good and sure to tell them that you're pulling punches too. "Handicapping" yourself by playing a high power deck suboptimally is insulting, as the nerds have pointed out. Instead, build a 75% deck and play to win. Finding a path to victory in an intentionally powered down deck is far more satisfying, for you AND the table, than to play poorly and cheapen any wins that anyone else gets. "Good game, you beat me fair and square" > "I could have won on t4 but I wanted you guys to have more fun thinking you really had a chance." Additionally, that you need to feel like your opponents can't beat you unless you walk them through it is straight up disrespectful when you're really just bringing a bazooka to a knife fight. Fight a fair fight and let players win or lose honestly. Again, it's more satisfying and fun for the entire table.

@@anynameinastorm I've had games that have gone that way and honestly? They feel bad. I don't enjoy games that go that way. But sometimes not everybody has decks that are on the same playing field. I bought my friends some precons and upgraded them, but I still didn't have any decks that could play at that level and it made me feel genuinely bad. It's not some power trip or some weird play to show how nice I am - it's normally just a bad combination of circumstances. Commander doesn't *have* a win-incentive. There's no ranked ladder or tournament structure, it's a social format that people play for different reasons. I didn't think that saying "i don't really care who wins i just play for fun" would stir the pot like this. I play Commander because I like building decks for the format AND I like the laid-back setting.

Hey, I'm sorry. I was a little presumptive and I was putting the sins of others on you. A friend and I have taken pains to build decks that are intentionally dialed down to a completely subjective 6-7. We are on a quest to see the format dialed back to 75%, where games have more of a swaled feel.. We play on spelltable often and advertise accordingly. Recently we had a proper villain join a game and proceed to tell us how they were holding back, not tutoring the optimal card for the situation, etc. Then, when the game got wildly out of control, they proceeded to whine that they "should have just won on turn 4". This probably isn't how you do it. I'm sorry again for the hurtful assumption based on my own negative experiences. However, please consider that, even if you don't ever say it, your playgroup will know that you're not giving it your all if they know what your deck is capable of. And giving hints on how to beat you can definitely be seen as patronizing. Maybe your play group is fine with it, but it would be incredibly difficult to get a random stranger to buy into that kind of treatment as a positive play experience. You gave your friends upgraded precons, so maybe you can upgrade your own similarly to play in that group. This entire video was about imposing a constraint on your deckbuilding to replace "best in slot" cards with high synergy cards that are objectively worse in a vaccuum. I can assure you that, once you break the chains of the best cards, you get to explore the interesting ones. Winning a game by copying Guardian Augmenter 14 times and knocking out the table with Esix is far more satisfying than any infinite combo or Thoeacle win I've ever done. That only happened because I put it in as an achievement to unlock rather than something objectively better. Anyway sorry again. Listen to The Commander Sphere podcast. Keep following the nerds. If you're truly interested in leveling the playfield, please consider doing it during deck building and not at the table.

Re: Removing Sol Ring. I think this works only if everyone is going to agree to take it out because while Sol Ring leads to some miserable games, it's worse if you will always be on the receiving end of those because you elected not to play the card. It is true that the total number "not miserable" games (from any player's perspective) will be lower if you personally remove Ring, as you won't be causing those games, but sometimes multiple players draw Sol Ring and it ends up evening out. The other issue is that it kinda limits you to your own group as people entering from outside the group will not know this convention and have it in their decks with the expectation that you will too.

I think I've always subconsciously stayed away from staples like Necropotence, Cyc Rift, Rhystic Study, etc. That being said, my ramp is usually pretty boring. Mono green has all the two drops minus farseek; green+anything has that plus farseek. If I don't have green, every two drop rock I can find that fit my color scheme. Occasionally I'll find a rock that specifically makes sense for the deck I'm running, but otherwise...
