I feel the same way. I picked up the M11 with a 35mm Cron and 50mm Rit. I almost have totally forgotten the other cameras I own. I am absolutely in love with this thing. I went through several generations of omd em1, and now om1, with all original lenses that cover from 14 to 420mm focal length. It is probably still cheaper than Leica m11 without lens. And I have tons on fun with both Olympus, Fujifilm GFX, Mamiya C330 for film. This is probably close to M11 + one good lens. :)

I've always considered Leica an extravagant lifestyle halo camera (halo from the past film era cameras) that commands a premium just because of the Leica brand. It's similar to premium high-fashion clothes, which doesn't always imply quality is worth the price. It differs from the Fujifilm medium format camera in that no other brand delivers the features that it does. Medium format, 16-bit raw, IBIS, and video.

Thanks for sharing this and I like your goal of not getting another lens until after a year. The M11 is a great camera especially paired with the 35mm. For me, an amateur shooter with no income from shooting professionally, makes it hard to justify owning one but I do chase for one. However, if i do get one, I will follow the same path and commit to one lens for a year before looking at another.

The joy of shooting with a Leica M will remain long after the price is forgotten. My 2015 Leica MP 240 has weather sealing, but the M lenses are not. So I take the risk, but keep the camera protected when not shooting. A leather cloth will do the job. Keep on rolling. BTW: the MP 11 is weather sealed too.

Sound advice, but let me add two things. I’m a fashion/beauty photographer for around 35 years now and based in Switzerland. My personal gear always included a Leica M and I prefer to buy pre-owned. After the first hit of buying new, Leicas depreciate very slowly. Some models even almost not. I sold my Leica film cameras always at a higher price than my pre-owned purchase price. No other camera I’ve had, came close to that slow depreciation. I now own an M7 and M10-R and when visiting the Leica store, the trade-in value of the M10-R was the price I paid for it 2 years ago. The M7 was even €1500 above what I paid 10 years ago. My advice: buy pre-owned, treat it well and only trade-up when you really want to. My second remark is on weather sealing. Leica M cameras and lenses have officially no rating. However, with some basic care they will also survive the toughest conditions. A friend of mine is a photo journalist specialized in conflict areas. He’s been in a/o Ukraine in the winter months with his M10-P and M10-M. His images were award-winning. No issues with the cameras and lenses. Sure, he wasn’t in the trenches all the time, but who of us is? Walking around in rain, snow and cold wasn’t an issue at all. Just don’t let them get soaked.

Agreed about buying it instead of trying to find some "reasonable sub" thought, especially in this camera world. I purchased the Q3 this May, and I find it most like my "ultimate camera," well, at least one of my "ultimate." after 4 months of using it, I still haven't found any reason to replace it. It's totally a different story when I'm with a7r2, z62, or even a1. I shoot much more than before; sometimes, I just walk around with it, and I'd like to. I still remember when I used a1 along with my 2470gm. I even had to fight myself to get out of my sofa. I was planning to get an m11m after I got Q3, but I ended up with a Pentax k33m. that is a fantastic camera, too. BTW: I think they are not mentioning the WR feature on the Q3 website because the Q2 was WR too, and with the same grade, which is ip52, they were trying to make those "new features" stand out.

This hits home with me. I have a box of cameras and lenses, film and then digital going back to when 1.2 MP was considered solid and a 128MB memory card was the largest on the market. I got burned by the horrible menus on an Olympus OM. I lost that camera on a vacation and I never regretted losing it.I only ever used it in full auto because the of horrible menu system. I then bought a Leica and I use it because it operates like a film camera, and a 2006 5mp Kodak that I use because the menu is a dream to operate. As of last year, I am done with camera chasing.

Smart thinking. Same here, I owned the Q -24MP , bought it while the Q2 was already there for a couple of months., not for the money cause I chose the Q-P which was more expensive than a regular Q. Now the Q3 came out after some thinking and watching some reviews by people who really know what they are talking about, I swapped. All the new features like better focussing, the flippy screen, new sensor, bigger battery etc. appealed to me but the main reason was, it has Pixel Binning, so those 60MP can be grouped and give me 36MP or 18MP with an extra stop of dynamic range ! I took only a couple of shots on 60MP to see what it looked like but after that, 36MP is my default for day and 18MP for lower light.

Same story here. I went through a series of cheap camera options because that is all I could afford for a while. Finally decided to get something proper mostly to document life with my family and kids, document life. Did a lot of research and knew a person with a Leica, decided that was what I wanted for "proper" photography. Not that I expected the camera to make my pictures better, more that I felt it would make shooting more enjoyable. Of course the pricetag kept me away and so began the long road to finding what I needed. Because of cost, I got a Fuji XT1, then an XT3, and then an XT4. Never liked what I got from the images. Didn't enjoy the shooting experience. I finally caved and bought an M6 and that was it. Paired it with a Cron 35mm. I wanted a digital counterpart so I got an additional M9 as my first digital Leica because of it's lower price point. It was a "whole new world". I still remember taking my first images of mundane life and every picture was amazing to me. Fast forward to two years later and I shoot a Leica MP film camera and a Leica M10-P. I still haven't sold the M9 for sentimental value but I may one day. (Sold M6 for the MP for film). I love shooting with my cameras and that's all that matters.

Interesting thoughts. I for one went the opposite way. What I mean is I went from "entry" level Sony straight into Leica M. I liked the M system a lot but then a friend of mine bought an xpro3 and I borrowed it and enjoyed it so much I ended up buying one anyway. I agree though, because after a while the xpro3, while being amazing in its own right just doesn't hit the same as the Leica M, I can use Leica forever and yes, I will get bored but I will always come back to it for one reason or another. I guess you just have to try other systems to truly appreciate what Leica M has to offer so honestly I don't think the money you spent on other systems wasn't a complete waste.

YMMV I transitioned from a full GFX kit to a Leica Q; then Leica M10-P ... started with the 50mm cron v5, changed to new 50mm lux; added the small 28mm summaron; added the 28mm elmarit; added the 90mm elmarit; achieving the 28-50-90 ... upgraded the Q to a Q-P for the -P set... realised its impractical to have three sources of 28mm; and im planning to trade the 28mm elmarit for a 35mm cron. For Leica, who takes pride in making their lenses backward compatible (M mount), I wonder how much of an engineering effort it would take to design weather sealed lenses? Of course, all of this is subject to change without notice. :)

In terms of just not wasting money, the wise choice is to buy used - no matter if it's a canon, fuji or leica. If you buy it on a good price, you'll waste no money. Second is that glass go first so instead of buying the best camera you can afford i tend to buy the best lens in my interest and just murder my old camera to the ground. Let's be honest, there's no need for anything better than 5Ds / A7R2 / D850 when you're making prints and you can easily get the job done with 15yo camera just for the internet usage. It is not the equipment that you have but what you do with it (e.g., how you use your equipment) that counts. Instead of getting sucked into constant equipment upgrades, it is better to learn the equipment you currently have and use that learning to its fullest. One of my friends has a first gen Panasonic micro 4/3 camera and he has taken many great photos without upgrading to the last and greatest camera. Even his lenses are the same ones he bought early on - he has not bought any of the newer lenses. I suspect you probably could have achieved results similar to the Leica by sticking with one camera and a lens or two and shooting in B&W.

That’s the M11 Monochrome. Don’t you miss the colours? Just asking, because the colours offer the possibility to go b&w in LrC and do with B&W sliders you need filters on the monochrome. Specially a blue and yellow one.

Can't fault Jay for getting his dream camera. Years ago I got my dream camera, the Nikon F2, best film camera ever made (sorry Leica). Today, who cares. Buy a camera like a Leica and look at who makes the sensor. Buy a Jeep Renegade and find out it is made in Italy with a Polish engine. Get the camera that fits your wants and needs. Like yesteryear, we looked at the label printed on the camera. Leica had a reputation no one questions. Nikon F and F2 has a reputation that no one questions. Today, so many cameras are the same, use parts from other manufacturers, etc. It's all an illusion to think a certain camera with a name that starts with an L or S or F will make a difference. They are nothing but tools of the trade and your eyes is what makes or breaks a picture. Don't mean to rain on your parade, but you are just fooling yourself. In my question for my Nikon, I got it for cheap when stationed in Japan. But in reality, pictures I took with my first SLR, the Pentax Spotmatic F are just as good as the pictures taken with a Nikon. I just wanted a Nikon because I could buy one. I also bought a twin-lens reflex and a 6X7 Mamiya camera and had a ball with them. None changed my style; all were fun to use. Vanity unfortunately drives us to this day.

@bondgabebond4907 including vanity, to each their own. I find that people's justification are personal, maybe not my cup of tea but I can understand. Some might see your desire for a Nikon F2 the way many see me with my Leica M. I simply live and let live. Thank you for watching and adding your comment to the conversation.

I understand its all subjective. To each their own. Is it cheap wine or expensive piss. IDK you tell me? What I know is that when you commit to your craft and put your money where your mouth is - it hits different. I shoot Leica for a number of reasons but any Leica shooter will tell you, its a feeling that almost can't be put into words. Call me a fanboy, I'm proud of it. But - I will warn you: don't go touching a Leica because once that happens you will not look at your other cameras the same way again. lol I'm messing around do was you wish.

I agree, the people that say Leica is too expensive how much do they spend on a new Sony camera every year? I’m planning on getting the new 50mm Sumilux it could last me another 30 years. I have a Leica 50mm from 1948 takes beautifully photos.

This doesn’t happen though. People don’t buy Sony cameras that rapidly even though they’re released rapidly. Like Leica glass is incredible don’t get me wrong however if you want amazing vintage glass just get a Zeiss planar. Also this man would not have saved money because he would have upgraded Leicas

The M11M is a dream come true for me. In the past when I shot in color I would always converted to B&W, so when I finally made up my mind and went all in on B&W. Til this second, never regretting my choice not even for a millisecond. If I want to shoot color I use my Xpro3 which ironically is set to monochrome, lol. But to be honest the xpro3 just sits there because the M11M is my EDC. In any event I appreciate you watching and adding your thoughts to the conversation.

Sounds much more like you are saving money by stopping buying into a new camera system every few years, Leica has nothing to do with it. I know people who use the same DSLR / lens they bought 10+ years ago and do fantastic work with them. There is almost no need for average users (if you make a living from photography then you can probably afford to buy newer gear way more often) to be upgrading cameras every few years no mater what camera system they are in. If you are somebody who wants to enter photography then it is way more cost effective to grab a used Nikon / Canon DSLR for less then $1000 and hold onto it for the next 5-10 years. If you want a compact street camera then there are the masses of much cheaper mirrorless cameras out there that will last the average user 10+ years.

Leica m lenses are the reason it’s moot for M camera to have weather sealing. The lens would have to be sealed too. Never did I think going from a Q2 mono to M11 mono would have even such big leap in robustness. The M is camera for artist. You’re making pictures instead of taking pictures.

Nice, but if you want to save your money, you can buy SIGMA FPL, for FOUR valuable reasons: 1. 60, 2 mecapixels, 2. Much smaller size. 3. 7 times is cheaper. 4. With proper lens adapter you can use huge array of lenses, beside the very good and dedicated SIGMA lenses.
