    Hey Dave, I bought the M11 a few months after it came out and the issues didn’t begging from day one. The more I was getting to know the camera, the more the issues started to show. Freezing on occasions, batterie draining to fast. I soon started to realize that it was too much of a camera for my own liking, not being a professional but more of hobbyist like many of us. I decided to sell it and long story short I bought the Leica M10 monochrome. Cheers keep the videos coming !!

    I've had my M11 for more than a year and I've had may be two freezes, It really isn't an issue at all. Much better stability than my M9 with the last OS. It's now a solid beautiful camera with great handling and creates amazing results. Defiantly worth the upgrade from my previous M10P.

    I bought my Leica M11 in March, and I've been using it extensively since then. I Looove it ! I haven't encountered any of the issues you mentioned in the video. I haven't experienced any freezes, nor have I encountered the 'Please Wait' issue even when pushing it as quickly as possible. I shoot in RAW only, no Raw + JPG. I would say that what I dislike about the M11 is its slow startup time. I wish I could start shooting as soon as I switch it on. My X-Pro3 is faster in that regard. I don't have the issue of white lines turning red in the viewfinder, and I don't see what setup could create this problem. I also notice a tendency towards magenta, which bothers me as well; I have to correct it in post. Anyway, I've never enjoyed using a camera as much as I do today.

Other than that, I agree with everything you said in your video. It was a good, entertaining video. I like the slow process with the M11; it makes me think about my composition. Totally agree with our review. I love mine m11, a bit to slow, mostly a bit to much of magenta but overall it feels and work so great for me. What metering methods do you use most of the time? Highlight weighted tends to be a bit underexposing. And I also use my m6 so I'm mostly in spot metering to have the same method as my m6. What's your method here, specially to compare to your analog metering?

    I’ve a M11P, I used to have occasionally freezes like others did and often find the image review is often showing photos that are not complete with focus (but it is perfectly in focus when viewed in Capture One). This had been quite discouraging given the price tag. But after the recent 2.1.1 firmware update, almost all these freezing and display issues are gone, now I’m starting to fully enjoying this camera like I used to with my old M10P!

    Between the repeated reports of the M11’s lock up issues and it’s double action click-click shutter movement and sound, the M10-R is still looking like the better option IMO. Especially factoring in the lower price. Yes the battery isn’t great, but you buy a spare or two, learn to shoot without LV or constant chimping, and all of the sudden it lasts surprisingly long.

A person speculated in the comments the card speed could be the issue, I wonder if the sandisk 90v which is 300md sec is the fix? (I’ll have to buy a faster card and try it.) Every time it’s locked up I’ve been pressing a button on the back when it has. This could also be a hardware error in the processor chipset as well. It would be nice to know.

    The M11 is a beautiful, lovingly designed, extraordinary camera. The lockup issue is certainly real, and in some instances goes beyond firmware, and, I suspect, related more to manufacture date (the later the better of course). I had a gently used M11 from 2022 that I purchased from a Leica dealer and it had persistent lockup issues, despite having the latest firmware. I tried all of the documented solutions: only certain memory cards, lens detection off, standing on one leg, etc., to no avail. I was able to return it and bought a new M11P, which has been trouble free. And yes, the Maestro IV processor in the Q3 is much more capable.

    Regarding the slow comment… I’ve not had that issue at all with the V90 Sony Tough cards. But a couple things to try maybe. 1-writing to internal first. Maybe playback will be better 2-setting your image review to the “shutter press” setting which keeps the photo up for review after you take it as long as you hold the shutter down. When you totally release it, it goes away. I’ve always used this so I’m able to see it after I take it for as long as I want, and only if I want to. Cheers!

    Have had the m11p about 100 days and very happy. Maybe one freeze up, and yes slightly underpowered when compared to my z8/z9 and even zf. But then it doesn't have to do af, subject recognition etc. Would have been good to have the same processor as the q3, but relatively small nits. On balance this is, for its purpose, a phenomenal camera. Strong iq, satisfying ux, nice integration of old and new, just a great camera to actually hold and use. The 256 gb integrated storage is superior, and of course the glass ecosystem is a revelation. My strongest desire (heresy alert): would prefer an integrated evf. So you can calibrate my pov I think the nikon zf has about the best mf experience to date. But then I'm relatively new to rangefinder so this could change, ymmv etc etc etc.

  • @boblozano

    @@davidherring that's fair. I would hope that the rangefinder is in it for the long term as well. I would just like evf as an optional, first class alternative, perhaps even as a different model. A Q with m-mount is another path to get to a similar result, but probably a larger chunk of engineering to getting there.

    I’ve had three digital rangefinders - M10, M10R, and M11. Both the M10 and M10R were used when I bought them. I treated them normally - didn’t baby them, but also didn’t throw them around - and I’ve never had an issue. Yes, due to the mechanical nature of this camera, I could see the focusing alignment getting knocked around. But even my M6 which is as old as I am still works fine. I think those concerns are a bit extreme, and if you treat your cameras as anyone would, you’ll be fine.

    I have the M11-P and have not experienced the buffering wait at all. However I have had it freeze up on four separate occasions and I am running the most current firmware 2.02. As for color, this is my third Leica digital camera. I had an original C-Lux with the Kodak CCD in it, a D-Lux 7 and now a M11-P, My impression is the M11-P is the closest to the original Kodak CCD C-Lux in look of any digital camera I have used. I have not played around with comparing the M11-P’s pictures at the three different resolutions yet, perhaps the pixel binning has a color impact. The M11-P has a different board in it because of the addition of the CAI, content authentication initiative hardware chip, maybe this has a impact on buffering performance or the 256Gb internal memory makes the camera faster. My only real complaint of the M11-P is the electronic shutter.

    Leica owes its digital existence to Kodak. Leica use to write about how Kodak was the world expert in digital Leica wanted the best so they went to Kodak for development help and to buy the CCD sensor. Leica knew the value of digital photography but Kodak didn’t. Early on Kodak owned the CCD market but the had no understanding what they had and to much to loose from the film business. The engineers at Kodak understood color. I remember reading a lot of shade about how bad the M8 was when it came out, it was out of my budget but a C-Lux wasn’t. Changing to digital saved me tons of money in developing costs for work. Leica won’t be able to fix the rolling shutter issue until they return to a global shutter like they had in the original kodak CCD’s. The color science of sensors is interesting, I find Leica colors more accurate without being clinical, one things for sure there is as many variants in CMOS sensors as there is in film stocks. The M8 vs M11 will be an interesting comparison. I look forward to it.

    I’m waiting for my 3rd copy (warranty). Freezes, file name showing up like you said, insane chromatic aberration (50apo) blamed on the sensor?! And streaky artifacts while shooting in bulb mode. Hoping New Jersey sends me a new one soon. Also turned in my lens for CLA (warranty) because it’s not as sharp as the name, reputation, and price promised. Still a fan, but all of this in my first year of shooting with it.

    Wow, that is rough! Sorry that's been your experience. Do you have a Leica store nearby? I know when I've had issues, I can just pop into Leica SF and they take care of things, call people, and make stuff happen. I had preordered the 50mm close-focus when it came out, and when I got it, it was back-focusing. It was hard to get this lens, and they were able to secure me another one within a week and swap it out. I can't imagine calling Leica and trying to warranty it. Probably would have been months!

    @@davidherring Thanks - ya, I bought it from the Leica store here in LA, and they've been great! I even went to Leica Paris, Florence, and eventually Wetzlar last summer - just after your trip to Europe, I think. The main guy there in Wetzlar customer service was able to replicate my streaky artifact problem there in the moment (erratic rows of black and colored bars on the images when in bulb mode). He took it to an engineer in the back who was able to repeat the problem too (phew!). I just happened to be there as a loyal Leica pilgrim. I got a new body out of that moment. Months later I was getting freezes and the file name on the display - as you said described. Anyway, I paid full retail for the best and "my last" camera (ha!) so I'm not ashamed of chasing every problem and expecting warranty support. Sadly, today is the one year plus a day, so from here on I'm hoping for stable joy. I'm asking for an M11P, even if I have to pay the difference - we'll see. Leica LA is helping me with that special request too. Thanks for your videos. Old Bay Area guy here (Berkeley, Oakland & San Jose), but now I'm down south.

When I was in Rome, my sensor had gotten dirty and the Leica store there did a full camera cleaning, free of charge, and gave me some snacks while I waited. Really solid review, but I'm surprised you moved from the M10R. A few more Mp, better battery life... but a whole load of issues the M10/P/R/M don't have. I think they tried to cram too much tech into the M11 and ran into hardware/heat issues. The increased complexity of the camera for me dilutes the M experience and the gremlins are unforgivable on a camera this expensive. Firmware updates just can't overcome fundamental problems.

    It is such a beautiful camera and such a wonderful tool. But it is a shame that Leica is not able to fix such a simple bug, looks like an issue of 15 or 20 year old digital cameras from a time where camera software was built by camera engineers and not by software developers. It is a shame Leica for such an expensive cameras. Leica gives a shit on the users.

    I wonder if it's hardware. Seems earlier serial numbers have the issues, later ones do not. It's perhaps unredeemable with firmware. I have no idea, but I know I've never had issues, and I know a few people who also have later versions and they have no issues either. It is unfortunate, though.

    Couple of things: I think the freezing/bricking thing has to do with the speed and type of SD card used in conjunction with how the files are set to be stored. (I've only experienced it when I'm saving to SD + Internal and I'm using the full size DNG + JPG, with the JPG utilizing a customized Film Style). Since switching to a V90 with 512gb capacity, and only saving DNGs directly to the card, so far, I've escaped the weirdness. The VF frame line thing I think has to do with light entering at JUST the right angle and reflecting off of the red LED(s?) running to signal exposure. The frame lines are designed to be brighter in full sunlight and dim more grey in darkness to even how the eye sees them out a little, but I think there is probably some sort of design limitation internally that allows reflected light to bounce around and catch that LED, intermittently illuminating the frame lines red. Definitely do not believe it to be a feature, just an intermittent quirk that only shows itself with specific conditions.

  • @davidherring

    @davidherring

    2 ай бұрын

    I think you're likely right in most of this, but I don't think it was the light that made my frame lines red. They truly turned red in certain parts, as if it was intentional. So weird.

  • @ansleythestewart

    @ansleythestewart

    2 ай бұрын

    @@davidherring right, that's happened to me before as well, and like you - I thought I'd stumbled into some new feature that was buried somewhere. lol. But we know that, unlike the M6, the M11 has a hybrid way of displaying the frames lines. There is a mirror to throw the middle rectangle into the VF - and that's there whether or not the battery is in or not. So it's analogue using existing light only. The frame lines and the exposure display are both LEDs, and the frame lines switchable with the lens and/or lever. Clear LED for the frame lines and red for the exposure info. So there's a mirror and at least 2 sources of artificial light crammed into that small area. I'm hazarding a guess that the intermittent red frame lines is something unintended with a design quirk with those sources of light mingling. Something where the center box mirror catches the right light and the frame line detection thinks its brighter than it is - increased the power of the lines/exposure info, and the red led bleeds into the glass that is projecting the frame lines. Might be wrong - but that's my best theory to explain it. By it's intermittent and erratic nature (when I saw it happen to me, it was moving around in the frame lines as I moved around) I don't think it's a hidden design feature that they've not fully implemented.

    To me, the M10R RAW files opened in Lightroom Classic desktop looking so much like Portra, in fact, like Portra 400 shot at 200 or 320 (about one stop overexposed). I loved that, and combined with excellent contrast yet softer finest details of the Leica 35mm f/1.4 ASPH, the images really looked like they'd been shot on that film. The M11, on the other hand, has a color balance that I don't like at all. For my preferences, it is worst to me than just leaning magenta, althogh I absolutly agree with you that it does. The camera also doesn't seem to respond well to any kind of difficult lighting situations, especially grey, drab, overcast lighting, which make the images just look weird. A much fun as it has been to carry various Leica film then digital bodies over a lot of years, I am thinking that I am just about over dealing with the colors, the lack of image stabilization (I enjoy street shooting at night) and the other quirks that you mention. They sure are fun, though! Thanks for sharing your honest thoughts.

    I have an M11 until later today when the rental is getting shipped back. It’s OK, but I won’t be buying one. One thing is the rangefinder not being able to give any indication of filter effects. It’s an obvious fundamental, but not one that I thought about or one that any YT video had mentioned. I shoot a lot of nature and use a polarizer to take the glare off leaves, wet rocks and such. On a rangefinder camera I have to use the rear screen, which I would need reading glasses to see properly. I also rented the visoflex 2, which I can adjust for my eyesight. However I find that unit to be poor compared with the EVF on my mirrorless camera. Similarly in low light (which the sensor is well able to deal with) I cannot see my camera settings without that crummy viewfinder. No rangefinder camera for me.
