WHY THE LEICA M10 | EVERYTHING A DIGITAL M SHOULD BE

Hi All,
In todays video we cover my first 3 months of owning the Leica M10. I owned the Leica M240 for about 5 years when I decided to sell it, and after 6 months I was missing it so badly that I picked up an M10.
We will be covering 3 main topics, How I'm getting on with the M10, how the M10 compares to the M240, and finally why a digital M in the first place.
00:00 - Introduction
00:51 - Why a Digital M
03:00 - Leica M10 vs M240
07:37 - The Lenses
09:49 - Small size & Leica M6
10:40 - The Downsides
12:49 - Conclusion

To find the right exposure with an M can indeed be a bit tricky. Generally, you’re best off by underexposing 2/3 of a stop during daylight. The M11 behaves quite different from all previous M’s. It reads the exposure directly on the sensor (like most other mirrorless cameras) rather than the shutter curtain (with the white spot) and a separate light sensor found in the M10 and older models. Fuji actually is the other way around. Since Fuji is one of the few brands that calibrate the lightmeter using a 18% greycard (rather than the common 35% greycard), they tend to underexpose. Fuji did this because the older 12 and 16MP sensors were very sensitive to blown-out highlights and a bit of underexposing protected these highlights. So now, they give the best exposure by overexposing around 2/3 of a stop during daylight.

This is fascinating. Metering on the M240 drove me nuts. I always had comp at -1/3 to -2/3 a stop. It uses a grey slat on it's metal shutter curtain to meter off of. If that's true what you say about the M11 then that is almost worth the price of entry (not really though lol).

I like your presentation and images. Thanks for creating and posting them here. The whole “Leica look” is a combination of the lens and the camera. It was a pre-owned Summilux-M 50mm ASPH lens, available at a nearby camera store, that I tried on pre-owned and demonstrator M9 and M Type 240 cameras, that pulled me into adding the Leica M system. I decided to buy the lens, before I knew which camera I would be adding, upon which to use it. I scuttled plans to buy a very large, very expensive Nikon telephoto lens, in order to buy a new M10, along with the Summilux-M 50mm ASPH. Now, 4+ years later, I have no regrets.

Nicely done Goughie. I’m loving my M9, I’ll get an M10 or better one day, and I can definitely notice a change in my approach with my workflow since owning it. I’m loving using it a lot. I’m currently testing ISO invariance of the M9 and your comments about poor ISO performance on the M240 made me wonder how the M10 fairs in this regard. Might be worth a test.

Great review. I use a M-P240 and love the handling of it. As a press photographer I often get in situations where the C mode is handy. Fiddling into the menu to find the setting is too time consuming. Not all M-mount Leica lenses can be used on the digital bodies and some are not recommended to put on the digitals because of the very close distance to the sensor, Meister Camera in Hamburg explained to me, when I was interested in a second hand 2.8/21mm. I ended up with a 3.8/24mm and this turned out to be an excellent buy. The Summilux 50 and Summarit 90 are completing my M-set. All this fits in the Bellingham Small Headley, as you already mentioned. My backup camera is a Q, but after watching your video, I might turn my M240 in as part exchange for a M10. Keep on rolling.

I bought an M10 during the pandemic and simply love using it. The M10 also brings much snappier response time when only using the optical rangefinder. I tend to get very different and more unique photos than when I use my Fuji system (x100f and xt4). Highly recommended for those who are looking for something like the m10. Oh and you can pull RAW over Wi-Fi straight into Lightroom mobile. Which makes it so I can leave my laptop and iPad at home while on trips.

Happy to hear that you enjoy your M10 ! Your Photos with it are very beautiful. I am also very happy with my M10P, the only thing I am missing from the FujiX100V is the close focusing distance. So I am really stoked about the Leica 35mm f2 Apo summicron with its 0.3m close focusing distance but the price is just incredible but I think Leica will make more lenses with better performance in that regard. Peace and love from Germany

Nice review .Covered all the important points.Been a Leica user over 20 years M3/2/4. with 50 ,28 ,90 and just bought the VL 50/1. For digital I use the CL with its native lenses and an SL2s. Of course I can use my M mount lenses on both those bodies too and do. However been toying with getting a digital M .It would seem from your experience that the M10 would be the only sensible consideration. Its a big outlay though and I`m not sure it would offer much over what i`m using now.Certainly it would be less flexible in terms of glass. I need af for some of the sports work although prefer the M glass . I guess for the while I`ll continue to use the M glass on the CL and SL2S . Thanks your review has been helpful .

Really nice video that sums up everything you need to know about the M10. You also really get everything out of the files. Really great pictures and grading. I was in wetzlar a few weeks ago because I wanted to know for myself how a digital M feels compared to my m6. I had tried the M10 M10R and M11 and was really amazed how analog they felt. The M11 was another really big step up from the M10. Together with the summicron also almost 13,000€ around my neck. that makes you really nervous. :D

This was an interesting take to hear. I've only seen a handful of videos of user critique about Leica that actually talks about pretty big deal-breaking flaws. I can't believe that the WB and Exposure is frequently wrong with the m240. That seems so fundamental to me.

Just waiting for delivery of my newly acquired M10, so watching a lot of vids to gen up on it. So thanks for this one Goughie, its a great help. I would say a couple of things. For travel I have eventually arrived at carrying a Leica Q, it is awesome for night and close focus and street and also subject isolation and ok for landscape and architecture with a bit of care. If I was like you bringing all that M10 kit on hols, I would also pack one of my Ricoh GRiii's (probably the GRiiiX which 40mm equiv). As it is hands down the best pro level pocket/street camera with lovely raw files and will give you great results close up (the GRiii is better which 28mm equiv) and not bad at night. It will sit snugly in your bag with the rest of the gear. I picked both of mine up for £650 a pop on eBay almost new.

Nice review, you covered all the points a photographer needs to know as opposed to the usual statisticians review out there. I think the M10 is a brilliant camera overall and regret selling mine even though I had no choice as it was a case of needing funds for a car purchase. The M10-P with the Leica hand grip was the perfect handling camera for me and if only I could afford to buy one again. Worst thing about the M240 for me was it was just so fat, I’d go from my film MP to it and it just felt alien whereas the M10 feels almost the same.

I only just recently found out Fujifilm had different manual focus assist modes like split prism etc. I never knew what manual focus was like until I borrowed a friend's Leica M-something (I'm not familiar with Leicas). Experience was pretty game changing, and far superior to peaking which often isn't accurate enough. Funny how we can have ultra accurate computer mouse but focus by wire is still pretty bad on any system. I kinda wish Fujifilm would make a new line maybe of fully manual lenses that had electronic communication to pair with their X-Pro and X-E series. Would be cool if it worked like SLR lenses where focus is done open and stopped down automatically when shooting. Strip off the motors, keep the optics, maybe make the aperture click/declickable so it'll be attractive to video shooters too.

Recently made the switch from the 240 to this as well. Id say all the points you made are spot on. One of my gripes is how difficult it is to actually lift and unlock the iso wheel, it requires a good amount of force on my copy of the m10 so I mostly just leave it in auto. As for metering, there are a couple modes, I’ve changed mine to spot metering so that way if I ever shoot anything backlit, I just aim the center at the shadows and keep the shutter half pressed to lock the exposure, compose and fully press, works like 80% of the time 😂 Every now and then, I wonder what it would be like if Leica started changing the mechanics of their bodies and lenses to focus down to SLR levels like 0.3 meters, thatd be something. I think the thing I like the most is the slight weight difference, I feel like I’m getting a little less neck strain with the m10, maybe its just me.

Some of the new Leica glass does now focus at 0.3m I think the new 35mm APO is an example if you can stomach the price! But you have to use the EVF! I guess closer than 0.3m you’ll always have parallax issues! But Fuji get around this quite well by moving the frame within the finder Agree the ISO dial is pretty tough to move! And the M11 I think has fixed the highlight issue, again at a pretty steep price aha!

I started in the Leica system recently with the Q2, but recently swapped over to the Mono version which provides a totally different - unique! - experience. I absolutely love it. This was my "cheap" entry into the Leica ecosystem, saving the full digital experience of the M system for when I'm better prepared to afford not just the camera, but the multiple lenses "required". Will it be the 11? or 12+ by the time I'm ready?? No matter - all good!

@@Goughie not really.. shot the m11 and a fuji at the same event. Talent had a white suit jacket. Fuji’s dr400 mode created hilights with detail and color, with the highlight tone giving me a filmic roll off on the highlights. The m11 had no detail in the highlights and even clipped highlights. “Well why didn’t you underexpose the shot!?!” Because I’m not going to shoot incorrectly and have underexposed images to accommodate a shortcoming in the camera that simple software can fix. Fuji dr 400 does this. Even canon has a highlight priority mode just for wedding dresses that would clip in wedding photos without it. What would you do? Underexpose any image with the bride in it? 😱 The client would think you are nuts as you try to explain to them how you would fix it in post. Yeah right. There’s no reason why the exposure can’t be slid down a few stops in the dynamic range curve and have the software raise the mind tones and blacks. This would give digital sensors the headroom where max white would be at 80% of the max range, not 100. Anything over that is read as “whiter than white” in software, data retain, and interpreted with a curve to provide a falloff instead of a hard clip. Just like film. The cost? Some noise in the black…also just like film…something easily corrected with NR software. Unlike clipped highlights. Leica, please do something like this!
