How the Kevin Durant Oklahoma City Thunder Era Crumbled

The Kevin Durant era in Oklahoma City will forever be looked at through the unfair lens of hindsight. Fans endlessly discuss his polarizing decision to join Golden State, but what isn't talked about is what lead to him leaving, and why he departed from what seemed like a great situation. This is the real story about the rise and fall of the OKC Thunder, and why Kevin Durant left.

Presti really did an amazing job especially since Russ and Harden were considered bad picks by a bunch of people when they happened. Also Reggie Jackson was an incredible pick in the late 20s. Presti literally did as good as anyone could have constructing the team initially the only bad part was letting Harden go. Other than that the only thing they couldve done better was get a superior coach to Brooks those prime years. The rest was just bad luck with injuries a few of those years that killed there chances.

They had a surprinsingly poor execution on offense; always taking bad shots, very little ball movement, forcing plays etc... the only reason they were able to beat so many teams was due to raw individual talent, yet they lacked a solid offensive system, so when facing the more strategic Lakers, Spurs or Heat they just couldn't come up on top. Those OKC teams were fun and Durant was incredibly humble. I’ll never forget how glad I was to see him win MVP and give his Mom all the credit. He knew how far he’d made it. Then, he got lost in the Twitterverse and became greedy and arrogant when he joined Golden State. All of these guys did gradually become divas and it’s sad considering the humble, team players they once were. You’d never see Harden be willing to come off the bench now. Sometimes, I wish I could go back to these days of the NBA when teams were still organically grown through the draft and smart, fair trades and everybody dreaded the big, bad Miami Heat.

This video does a great job at really framing what KDs mindset was potentially like when he made his decision to go to Golden State. From the beginning, KDs team was never OKC, it was Seattle, and that team left to go somewhere else, really abandoning this idea of loyalty. Because honestly, how can you expect a player to be loyal when an organization can't do the same thing with a city. When OKC chose to ditch James Harden for financial reasons, that must have really left a mark for KD, a team trading away a player because of money, another example of failed loyalty. You can criticize KD for joining the Warriors, calling it a weak move or an easy move, but you can never criticize him for leaving OKC.

The thunder had no real team system, neither did any of the other options he had available to him. Him and Russ traded iso possessions with no consistent shooters around, that’s not real basketball. Golden state allowed him to do that. As a fan of the nba obviously I didn’t like that, but as a hooper I can see why he went that route.

Should've never traded Harden who was like 24 at that time. Plus, the haul that they got for him was stupidly low. Harden and 3 players for Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb and picks? Tf. OKC undervalued Harden. At least they're poised to bounce back with like all the picks they have now.

What sucked is that year the Thunder went to the Finals, we knew it was the beginning of a dynasty even tho they lost that one. Im from OKC. When they announced they traded Harden, I knew at that moment it was over. Oklahoma is mostly a football state and I heard a lot of people say, “We can replace a 6th man.” I knew these people didnt know what they were talking about. Harden was a potential franchise player who was a 6th man in name only. A 6th man doesn’t ordinarily come off the bench and drop 40 points multiple times a season. What’s even more sad was how little the Thunder got in return for Harden and Harden later coming out and saying that he wanted to stay in OKC and wouldve worked out a deal to stay had he not been traded.
