How The San Antonio Spurs Imploded With Kawhi Leonard

Everyone knows about Kawhi Leonard's dominance as a San Antonio Spur. The countless defensive awards, the clutch game-winners, and the 2014 Finals MVP. What isn't nearly as talked about is why he departed from the Spurs in what seemed like an instant. A future that looked like it would have nothing but winning and good vibes turned into a disaster, in a matter of just 12 months. But why did this happen? This is how the San Antonio Spurs imploded with Kawhi Leonard.

Kawhi's uncle was barely mentioned in this video... He was the single largest reason Kawhi left... I remember CLEARLY hearing from insiders that Dennis wanted his nephew to play in LA and CONSTANTLY pressured him about it even before the injury, starting after his Finals MVP and going into the 2014-2015 season... That whole NY second opinion thing was ALL Dennis.. The Spurs only cleared him to play to try and get ahead of the shit Dennis was pulling behind the scenes... and that was just a small part of his involvement. Dennis wanted Kawhi to be the next Kobe... And you cant be that in San Antonio. I still live and work in San Antonio to this day.. At that time, I was doing I/T work for various individuals associated with the organization directly and indirectly.

Sports media was really bad about it too, ppl wanting him in a bigger market and or with their team, wanting a big scoop, being a hater in general or bc Popp preferred Ginobili or bc Ginobili was better and won multiple championships with the Spurs. I remember ppl acting like the Spurs were selfish wanting Kawhi to play bc guys were retiring and wanted a shot at a championship, that the players “called him out” by having a players only meeting and that it really had to be Popp that had them do it, that Popp was too hard to play for bc he actually coached his team, I’m sure I’m forgetting some but these are things that could’ve been covered negatively like they were or as a positive. A player seemingly holding out on his team when they could win a championship would get them dragged by the media in many circumstances, responding to his teammates players only meeting as tho it’s an attack, acting like a coach coaching his players hard makes him Bobby Knight, ex players and the media were feeding these narratives some of which even seemed to enjoy it or felt like they finally were able to grind their axe. I was of the opinion Kawhi was top 3 in the league and had something more than the other stars, he had an edge, I wasn’t surprised Toronto won it all, I wasn’t surprised idiots said Toronto winning it all made the Spurs look bad despite them in some ways being part of the narratives that helped Kawhi in exiting San Antonio.. I’m not surprised despite his not playing at the end bc of the injury that he’s still dealing with injuries. I’m not surprised the Spurs haven’t returned yet to their former glory, or that they have a solid team of young guys who are growing and at times look good when they lose and look bad when they win. I like Kawhi but if he wanted out I prefer him to be gone so the Spurs and Popp can try to build something, and without Stephen Jackson, Steven A Smith, Magic, etc meddling with things. I’m still a Spurs fan and Popp is still coaching them thank god!!

The fact the Uncle Dennis didn’t play a much larger factor in this video is absolutely ridiculous. He was THE reason for Kawhi eventually finding his way to LA. Maybe if Zaza doesn’t have that dirty undercut play on Kawhi, and they make another Finals run, the inevitable is fended off for a few more years. Also, the Miami Heat during DWades career would be really interesting. Like, a 20 year span from them (I know this would be a long, long video). From draft lottery, to having the right pieces to trade for Shaq who supported DWade to win Miami's first ring, to being stuck in mediocrity, landing LeBron and Chris Bosh, winning titles, losing LeBron but returning only one season later through smart trades to a somewhat contender, losing DWade and Chris Bosh, which leads to a small "rebuild" without trying to get a high lottery pick, DWades return and his last dance, and returning just one year later to the NBA finals. And now being a contender when everyone is healthy to win it all.

I said this then an I’ll say it again: the city of Toronto owes Demar an apology. Is kawhi better than Demar? Yes. But look at what happened. Demar continuously lost to Lebron. As did everyone else in the east. He moved to the west; the biggest obstacle was out the way. Ya’ll didn’t even give Demar a shot to see what it would look like without facing Bron in 2nd round or ECF every year. And then in the finals: no KD and No Klay. I think Demar would still be able to close it. Ya fleeced him out a ring.

@@_ftreiv5129 if that’s how you feel, you really doubt Demar. A lineup of Lowry, Demar, OG, Siakim, and Marc with valanciuas, Powell, Ibaka, etc off the bench could get the job done. If the warriors were at full strength or Lebron was still in the east then yes, Kawhi over Demar would make perfect sense; he would be more likely to beat those two teams. But as it turned out? Not KD or Klay and Lebron out west not even making playoffs? You could sticked with Demar. At the very least a finals appearance was guaranteed either way.

I feel we will never truly learn what happened between Kawhi and the Spurs until after Kawhi retires and has some kind of deep interview like we've seen from retired players. I do think however that the blame is on both sides. I think the team and organization didn't handle the situation the best they could've and Kawhi also ghosted the team which I dont see many people bringing up much. That's the deciding factor in personal respect for him. I'm sure Demar didn't want anything to do with San Antonio, but he came to work everyday and was a true professional and I will always respect that about him. Kawhi on the other hand pulled a Ben Simmons before Ben Simmons did. I remember David Robinson even tried multiple times getting in touch with Kawhi just to be left in silence. Extra: also to those saying the spurs would've lost anyways in the warriors series, just remember that the 3 games the Spurs and Warriors played against each other that regular season, 2 of those were blowout wins for the spurs and game 1 was looking to be the same case.

Their biggest mistake, assuming that Kawhi would be exactly like Duncan in terms of personality. San Antonio struck lightning with a bottle twice with David Robinson and Tim Duncan, perhaps the two most humble Superstar players ever. So when faced with a star that wanted things that most normal stars want (aka. recognition, growth of their personal brand etc...) they had no idea how to handle it. It certainly didn't help when players like Tony Parker made comments about Kawhi's injury

Long story from a Spurs fan skip to end for summery Your correct about your first statement. I thought he would go down the same path as Timmy the humble superstar who let his work do the talking, then the whole debacle happened and I was on the fence about it even after he left. That's when instead of listening to mainstream media(SAS who has his own agenda his pushing) I did my homework. While on the spurs Khawi was trying to get strings pulled asking the team for big name star to team up with ironically Paul George(who was his last option), Russell Westbrick, and Jimmy Butler( around 1:40 mark he mentions it kzread.info/dash/bejne/mGWdpNOeh8mwXcY.html ). Then you heard about how Jordan lowballed Khawi on a shoe deal ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/g3p5pNeMf6XgkqQ.html ) basically if he was on a big market team with the numbers he put up he would got the the deal. Then something that went under the radar was Uncle Dennis asking price for Kahwi services ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/pHqOo8uRY8S3Yps.html ). If he wanted that from the Lakers imagine what he got from the Clippers(look above). TLDR: Dennis and Khawi(not just Dennis) wanted ALOT MORE CONTROL of a sport organization and a WINNING organization like the Spurs were not going to let a superstar dictate how they do business(IMO Also why alot of superstars don't go there even though the Best Head Coach possibly ever is there(KD, Kyrie , and Lebron)).

As someone who got into basketball full time because I saw the Raptors buzzer beater (and then every Kawhighlight I could search on KZread): thank you. There is no telling what could have been if Kawhi were healthy, but that being said, he has 2 amazing rings. Besides LeBron, Kawhi is the most complete player of our generation.

If that’s when you became a fan; then you missed out on the best version of Kawhi, when he was a Spur there was debate in the media if he was better than Lebron. He was a beast defensively and way more explosive.

LeBron is a better playmaker, by a mile. Kawhi is much better defender, more efficient scorer (always close to 50-40-90 club) though about athleticism LeBron has a slight edge. Kawhi is a beast for sure.

You're missing huge factors here. Kawhis family was very vocal about him moving to LA and only LA. He went to Toronto because that was the only team willing to send anything of value back to the spurs for a 1 year rental of Kawhi. This was just always going to happen. Kawhi wouldn't accept anything but LA and (I believe) was willing to fake an injury to force the spurs to trade him.

I'm a spurs fan so this would be a bit biased but i'm pretty sure Kawhi just wanted out. The Spurs has one of the best health facility/staff in the nba, he just used the injury to get out of san antonio and play for his hometown. His stint with the raptors proves it since there is no reason for him to not resign with a championship team that favors all of his requests. I don't mind his decision but i just wished he didn't leave the spurs like that wherein people think the spurs mishandled him.
