The Canadian singer delivered a lengthy apology on social media after a frustration-wrought DJ set at Coachella April 14.
"I want to apologize for the technical issues with the show tonight," Grimes (real name Claire Boucher) wrote on X, formerly Twitter, after her set. "I wanted to come back rly strong and usually I always handle every aspect of my show myself-to save time this was one of the first times I've outsourced essential things like rekordbox bpm's and letting someone else organize the tracks on the sd card etc."
And the "Oblivion" singer-who was seen yelling in irritation several times throughout her set in videos shared to social media-added that the malfunctions provided a learning experience for her.

as a DJ let me tell you: Grimes's flop at Coachella was literally proof that she cannot DJ, and that she did not prepare her set properly; this mistake would not have happened if she simply made sure beforehand that all her tracks have correct BPM's and that non of them get fucked when she plugs into a console (which she should have checked on the sound check) AND (most importantly) if she actually DJ'ed as most of us do, and not used the 'beat sync' option, which basically makes DJing almost the same as playing songs from a Spotify playlist. The fact that someone without any basic DJ skills performs at Coachella is a bit baffling to me tbh.

I was a sheltered artsy kid so the biggest worries I had (outside of school) were choosing my outfits and working on my creative projects. Honestly I think even her best work occupies this boring valley between pop and more bold or overt creative experimentation. One more notch towards the former and it would have more of a catchy radio quality, one more notch towards the latter and she’d have more of a legit FKA Twigs or Kate Bush quality. But instead she somehow finds like the boringest of all worlds by triangulating something between those. At least that’s how I’ve always felt about her music. I wouldn’t say it’s bad but I’ve never understood the appeal either.

I feel so bad for your age group in this situation. My son was your age and really liked and respected Grimes. Then her problematic comments made him pretty depressed for a while. He used to like Elon, too. He still loves space exploration, but he really doesn't appreciate the way the pair of them pretended to be basically kind and for a less hateful world only to do a 180. Just saying this to let you know you're not alone. And I tell my son that the good he related to in them was part of him, even if it wasn't real on their end. He has integrity where they did not. I hope your generation keeps your love of cool music, even if you guys have to look a bit harder to find it from less toxic artists now. Your compassion will help shape the new music going forward. Distancing from Grimes will make room for ethereal singers who aren't corrupt. (Hopefully they'll stay that way fingers 🤞)

Personally, based on what I've read and heard of her life, it sounds like Grimes is very hyperactive and like a child, has fleeting interests. I believe her activism era was very much real to her, because she sounded genuine, she appeared invested. But it seems she also parrots the interests of her circle, whomever that social group may be. Now that she's with Musk, from whom she seems to be codependent, it makes sense to me she'd mirror many of his views. She just seems like someone very unstable, in the sense they'd have a hobbie one day and drop it completely the next month in favour of the new big thing. Or that's just my appreciation.

Im not sure what happened at Cochella, but from what I know, modern CDJ programs adjust the speed of songs for you, but old school DJs can do it by ear. This is a major crux in the DJ community, many people believe if you can't beat match by ear, then you're relying too much on tech. If she was relying on the sync button, then software is doing this by numbers. If your numbers are wrong and you can't adjust the tempo by ear then you'd have to adjust the tempo using numbers like how the software does. If the bmp was doubled, I guess you'd need to make extra steps for you to achieve this matching.

Programs like rekordbox, traktor, etc. analyze the bpm of tracks within a certain bpm range that you can set, so it can either show up as 160 bpm or 80 bpm (which is technically the same). My guess is whoever prepared her tracks did it in batches and didn't double check, and then she obviously doesn't know how to beat match on the fly so the doubled and mismatched bpms confused her

1000% percent she should know how to handle it in real time if she were even a mildly proficient dj. Unless she’s djing straight jazz or foxtrots everything should be divisible by even numbers since it’s going to be in 4/4 measures or maybe 6/8 measures if she plays a song with that Gary Glitter beat or the Personal Jesus beat. Frankly, she should at least be able to dj without having to have everything preloaded like its homework assignment. You should be able to dj with a working mixer and sound without even the use of a WAV visualization. Also, having someone doing all your prep work for you sounds like a terrible idea for any club let alone Coachella.

And in comments that followed she said the thing about being a human supremacist, and later when someone said something about "white power" she said she was okay with it because "white achievements have been underrated" or "underappreciated" or something like that. Then a bunch of her own friends and followers were asking her to apologize and delete the tweets and she said something like "I'll never apologize for loving the human race," or loving European achievements or some such. @@fattern111no. It doesn't. Black culture, especially in the US, came about under extreme circumstances that forced a label on a lot of people from a lot of different places. They had to form their own culture, much of it in secret. They had to sneak away from horrible people to be able to dance. They were banned from reading, so they had to find ways around that, ways to learn, ways to communicate. They would make songs, go dancing. They created their own dances. That culture very much only belonged to them. And it wasn't some gift from slavery. They created it in spite on slavery, through the strength of their own will to survive. And they fought for their freedom. They regained their equality. And white people have been trying to take it back ever since. There's not a white culture. We didn't all come together and bond as one people based on our skin color, or get forced to do that because of discrimination against our skin color. We're way too fractured to be a culture. There's American culture, and a lot of subcultures, but there's not really "white culture." We don't have a special way to mill wheat that only white people do.

As for the dj stuff: basically in rekordbox (dj software) it sometimes analyses the songs at different bpms or half time. I dj drum and bass; so 174 a likely dnb tempo sometimes is listed as 87 bpm. When you have sync on, it will change the track that’s listed at 87 to 174 (ie syncing the tempo); however it means the sound sounds double speed. The way is an easy fix you just press x2 in export mode in rekordbox. She would have encounter the issue if she had time to practice her set 😅. Most DJs know how to dj by ear (with visuals - vinyls is not for everyone) and don’t 100% rely on sync; like it’s a case of just turning off sync, reloading the track and then making if as she stayed 173 (what sub focus usually is) just 86.5 . I have a phone with a calculator. The other issue is she outsourced her rekordbox prep - which I get it’s annoying but like…. Girl no 😂.

  • @sentimentaltrash

    @sentimentaltrash

    2 ай бұрын

She also mentions the sub focus track reading at 134 instead of 173 which is weiiiiiird; as I dj him a lot and his transients (ie where kick / snare) are prominent making it easy for rekordbox to pick up the tempo. So that is honestly really odd to me. But yea an easy fix would literally just turn off sync and then wait for a moment in the track that has no beats to blend in the next track at any bpm; 3000s (standard for headline shows) make it really easy to do beat jumping and looping but that I would say is more intermediate. Which again…I get she’s busy and has a lot going on but a dj 101 would have saved this 😅

Of course her morals and political beliefs suck so I don't support her.

New sub. You’re doing a great job kid! Also sorry if that offends you but at 40 everybody is a kid to me now. You have a great no-nonsense, unbiased point of view and I like your rather droll delivery. Cheers and keep up the good work. P.S. I was a young hip kid in a hip college town when Visions first dropped in 2011. And let me just tell you: she was absolutely a trailblazing, unique, one-of-a-kind thing at that time. That album is fully a 10/10 masterpiece and even though she has followed it up with decent stuff, the best thing she ever could’ve done was drop that one album and fade intentionally into obscurity Jai Paul style. Her myth would be legendary and people would talk about her like she was a musical deity til the end of time. Some people are better left behind their personae in this regard.

i grew up low income in vancouver and as a kid in the alt/punk/rave/subversive art communities I definitely have always been critical of Grimes particularly because of her poverty tourism. she'd made bangers for sure and I will give credit where it's due, but her putting in her bio that she "got her start in crackhouses in Montreal" when in reality she was the one charging people rent, is just the biggest eyeroll ever. if she was just for real about where she actually comes from i think she would be more likable...maybe...except the whole nazi thing like Claire what are you DOING

Yeah. I appreciate the backstory, but I can't like her again after the nazi stuff. I'm still kind of stunned that she never made a retraction of those comments, or apologized for liking and following those accounts, or how she doubled and tripled down instead as if that was showing integrity. 🤢 And the sad thing is, I still really want to like her, but to me she is lost. I don't even know if she knows what she did. Or if she does know, but she just feels she needs to live in that racist zone to access her kids or get child support. No idea. I wish she had never met that guy. But, like you mentioned, maybe she was kind of a corrupt landlady type all along.

I feel like there’s a few things wrong with this video. Just because grimes comes from a wealthy background does not mean that she has been supported from her family in her music career. She is a college drop out who left to pursue music, whilst in college there’s interviews of her saying she couldn’t afford to heat her apartment. It is very feasible she wasn’t supported in artist endeavours when her family appear very academic. However, upon this, even if she had been supported by her family I don’t understand why this is relevant to anyone because she has never claimed to be or not to be, and this has no impact on her art apart from her own personal influences, and if her art is not appealing to you because of her upbringing or background just don’t listen to her? Another which I think is my main point is that you’ve held over her head a clearly abusive relationship. If you have any knowledge on how domestic abuse happens, they influence many parts of someone’s life including what the say and their beliefs. Love and attachment can make people act in so many ways, but when someone has clearly been taken advantage of, I find it vastly unfair to hold this over them especially regarding her children.
