HOW THE I.R.A (VERY) NEARLY K*LLED MARGRET THATCHER| Rory Carroll, author of "There Will Be Fire"

This week I spoke with Rory Carroll, author of 'Killing Thatcher"/ "There Will Be Fire" which details the IRA's plot to assassinate Margret Thatcher and her cabinet using a bomb a Brighton hotel in 1984.... and came incredibly close
Rory spoke to me about the years of planning that went into the attack, the effect and closeness of the bomb itself, how far Thatcher was from dying that night and how it effected her going forward.
We spoke about the infamous "We only need to be lucky ONCE.." statement that the IRA put out the next day and the IRA's "England Dept." which was tasked with bringing the conflict to British shores.
00:00 Rory’s own background
02:50 The Troubles up until 1984 Brighton Bombing- context
05:10 Previous IRA attempts on live of political figures ??
08:20 “The England Dept.” of the IRA & planning the bomb
17:10 Were British Intel expecting the attack to come??
19:40 HOW CLOSE THEY ACTUALLY CAME
22:30 IRA STATEMENT the next day- “WE ONLY NEED TO BE LUCKY ONCE..”

What about the mortars that landed in the back garden of number 10. I will never forget watching the famous shiny black door shake due to the shock waves of the explosions. BOOM!

I had no time for PIRA, I of course understand they were lauded by many Irish people & those of the massive Irish diaspora. That said, I had no issue with them attacking the Conservative Party & Thatcher, that unfortunate failure was a huge disappointment to me.

This was such a good interview I was eager to get the book…until he mentioned the name of the book and I realized that I owned the book and was looking forward to reading it until I opened it and found so many factual mistakes just in the first chapter that I never picked it up again. Still the interview was great and I love this podcast. Merry Christmas. 🎄 🥰

@@thegoodlistenerpodcast Had a feeling you would ask that. Have to go back over it, but will certainly get it to you. Honestly, I was really interested in what he had to say until I realized that I had a different reaction earlier. Will get back to you soon! Hopefully in time to wish you a Merry Christmas as least!

I haven’t forgotten your request for instances in this book that i found misleading. I tried to email you but it wouldn’t go through. Going back over it i found the prologue, which he said was for the purpose of historical context, failed to make an understandable background. He managed to omit so much very important information that i found it was misleading. If he wanted to go into the history of the partition, it would be necessary to mention that the treaty of 1921 required that Ulster remain under British control and that this, and other factors that demonstrated British rule, and that this treaty was so unpopular it caused a civil war among Nationalists that lasted 2 years. In addition he glosses over the actual partition to the point that the uninformed reader would think it was all an afterthought of the British, and no mention is given to explain that Unionists accepted only 6 of the 9 counties of Ulster so that they could assure Protestant Rule over Catholics. On top of failing to mention these important historical background facts, he didn’t go into the unequal treatment of Protestants and Catholics that would make the formation of armed struggle understandable. Now he could have written the book without any historical context, but since he did lip service to providing a background for the Troubles, I find the sloppiness of his prologue is actually misleading and certainly not helpful to understanding the circumstances that lead to the Troubles. Actually, I quit the book at the end of the prologue because I just didn’t trust his reporting. I hope that helps a little. I would be willing to be more precise, but i purchased it for Audible, which makes it harder. Also, if I could figure out what i did that messed up my email, it would be better to use that method. Thanks so much for your terrific interviews of a period that fascinates me. I learn more with each.
