How the culture wars engulfed society by the man who coined the term

“To deny there is a culture war is in fact an act in the culture war.”
James Davison Hunter, the sociologist credited with coining the term culture wars, tells Stig Abell how technology “inflames” cultural conflicts because they “free people form accountability”.

Very thoughtful and thought provoking, thank you. I'm glad you mentioned the corrosive power of the algorithm. I would underscore your point about "some people making a living off it" by adding that in my opinion it is the devastating combo of [the algorithm] + [the profitability of selling hate] which has now brought us so low and to the brink of true horror. While he didn't quite invent the art of hate-salesmanship in America, Rush Limbaugh certainly helped elevate that endeavor and show the way for ever-more insidious souls like Murdoch and Ailes to build on and accelerate the great wrecking ball of grief which he helped get rolling. I do suspect that the coming bloodshed which is likely to accompany the 2024 election, either way, will offer us an opportunity to collectively reflect on the problem of getting our greediest and seediest corporations OUT of the business of steering their audiences towards society-killing levels of hatred as an acceptable way to make a buck.

“Hate journalism” is a lot older than you think. Read about the Hébertists (also known as ‘the exaggerators”) during the French Revolution. it’s also worth reading about the Gordon Riots (and “King Mob”) in England in 1780. They put the January 6th protests in context. It’s often been said that, in a debate, you should be able to represent and summarise your opponent’s opinion in a way which they would recognise. I don’t always live up to that. But I try.

Respect and tolerance are both in very short supply, but desperately needed. Some people(s) refuse that their children are even exposed to those concepts. Very disconcerting.

Correction: Otto von Bismarck, by James Davison Hunter's own admission was the one who coined the phrase "culture war" to describe the fierce religious divisions in Germany during the 19th century. Divisions within America stem from the fact that the nation is itself based on a fragmentary culture with links to Britain, but whose origins stood opposed to the imposition of an imperial ethos with its set of mores and norms tied to the monarchy.

Erm no, it was an active policy. Kulturkampf was an all out war of propoganda between the new imperial government led by Protestants against the Catholic church whose response was directed from the Vatican.

Exactly what I remember, I studied European history while at university and saw many historical places while traveling Europe in the last century, I would love to go back and, among other things walk through the Brandenburg gate. When last in Berlin there was barbed wire and machine guns keeping us capitalist out of the workers paradise.

Studies show that political activists are, when compared to the general population, less likely to be able to understand arguments put forward by their political rivals. This obviously leads to a distrust of motives. Because if you can't understand why someone holds a view in opposition to your own, you're more likely to believe its simply down to malevolent intent. So the answer is, the less input from political activists on any particular subject, the better.

  • @ClemHem

the German term is Kulturkampf, which means 'Culture Fight' or 'Culture Struggle', so to call it 'Culture War' is rather a deviation (slight but significant) from the original concept - because this is a sort of combat conducted by civil methods rather than a military confrontation; a conflict occurring between opposing ideological persuasions within a civic context, not a battle of armed forces (which latter can also be described as a Kampf but then it's not a Kulturkampf but a real Krieg i.e. War). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kulturkampf and it appears that the phrase 'Kulturkampf' was actually coined not by Bismarck but by Rudolf Virchow: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudolf_Virchow

Disagreement over culture will always happen but, for me, culture war means something distinct from the normal dynamics. It means deliberate amplification and populism of social issues to distract from economic issues. This is most easily seen in US politics, which is owned by the corporations, especially over healthcare. As the Democrat party have adopted the previous Republican healthcare policy, the Republicans have no healthcare policy, other than to shout 'socialism'. As the corporate lobbyists write economic policy, there's little to discuss other than social issues. How to get elected despite being a corporate lackey like the other corporate lackey? Explode minor social disagreements into culture war.

She called out your phoney dismissive accusation as a diversionary tactic made you look a fool. As you couldn't really deny that was what you were doing in its particulars you bring out your big gun from across the pond, to pontificate in general terms. Another diversion.
