How The Continents Are Actually Divided

Have you ever questioned how many continents are really there? This is a common issue and it has something to do with the way we were taught geography at school. It turns out continents are divided in an arbitrary way which changes from region to region, and in this video I'll explain all those differences.

    Great video, I grew up with the 7 continent model but I like these better: - 6 continent model #2 - I've always found the Europe-Asia border to be unsatisfying geographically. -5 Continent Model #2- Not mentioned in the video, (Africa, Eurasia, Oceania, America, Antarctica). I like this model because it condenses both the Americas and Eurasia (which each of the 6 continent models selectively do). The problem that makes it hard for me to fully commit to this is that I feel like if we combine the Americas due to panama isthmus, then why aren't we combining Africa to Eurasia due to the Sinai isthmus. -4 Continent Model- I find this one really appealing in that it sticks to one defining characteristic (A huge landmass) and just rides it out. Only problem is that Afroeurasia is so BIG. In general I like the idea of restricting the term continent to a purely physical geography concept, where continents are mutually exclusive landmasses that divide up the world. This doesn't remove all arbitrarness (how big for a landmass to be a continent) but does limit it. I think cultural boundaries are already much better described by Regions like "The Middle East", "The Anglosphere", "Latin America" etc. These commonly overlap because culture is much more amorphous and most people identify with more than one group (be it a linguistic group, religious group, political group etc).

    Love the video! My own (radical) take is that there are two continents. I think a visitor from another planet who came here would intuitively see two big, connected land areas, and a bunch of increasingly-smaller pieces of land. Afro-Eurasia and America are the two continents, and on that scale, Australia and Antarctica would be giant islands instead of continents. :)

    I could argue there are a measly *two.* Australia and the rest are too small, just a bunch of big Islands. Same with Antarctica, which isn't even really one island anyway assuming you don't count its ice. That leaves the two big continents, afro-eroasia, and america. Two main big continents with bundles of semi-connected and semi separated land masses we call islands, or maybe just small continents. Dwarf continents maybe...? But hey, that's just one idea.

    no there isn’t Central America 🇬🇹🇳🇮🇭🇳🇸🇻 is not a continent. there is no model where central america is a continent. That is just a name for the lower isthmus of North America (I am central american) it would make no sense because in your model, Saudi peninsula is a continent, India is a continent, Greenland is a continent and all the subcontinent in Oceania are continents.

  • @Mayhem12345
    @Mayhem12345 Жыл бұрын

    I'm from Romania (Eastern Europe) and we don't go by the "6 but different" model. We are taught in school that there are 7 continents. North America, South (Latin) America, Europe that is linked to Asia, but there are 2 different continents, not one, because they are divided by an invisible line, Africa, Australia (yes, not Oceania, but Australia) and then Antarctica, which most of people even forget that it exists, but we know there are 7 of them. So yeah, North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and Antarctica, exactly 7, and this is taught in school throughout the entire country. I don't know about the other Eastern European countries out there (if any fellow Eastern Europeans see this comment, let me know about your country), but here in Romania, we are taught that there are 7 of them. What we are confused about is if The Arabian peninsula is part of Africa or Asia or both. Some say it's part of Africa, others say it's part of Asia, others say it's part of both, and others say it's it's own thing. I personally like the thought of Afroeurasia, The Americas (as one continent), Oceania and Antarctica, so, yeah, the idea of only 4 continents existing, because basically a continent needs to be divided by a big ocean. But that's just my opinion, which doesn't really matter or change anything. And by the way, the map we all know is actually wrong, because Greenland is not actually as big as is depicted and it's roughly the same size as Madagascar or maybe a bit larger (correct me if I'm wrong, cuz I might be), but not the same size as Africa, or larger than Australia. This map tends to shrink everything in the middle and enlarge everything in the upper and lower parts. That's why Greenland and Africa appear to have roughly the same size, while in reality, Greenland is smaller than even some African countries. If we look at Greenland, it's larger than South America, Africa and Australia, but in reality is much smaller than all 3 of them, that's why is an island and not a continent in it's own. Anyway, this was my ranting, if you read till the end, thanks for listening haha, have a nice day!

    if we remove all the water on the earth, it's just all one big continent, or land, or huge rock. The water makes it seem like there are different "lands" but it's all connected underneath, and so the "Continents" are just simply land that rises above the surface of water.

Also, the culture is just so different between canada & usa which are similar vs mexico with several central & south american nations which are more similar.
