How the Buddha Escaped Death - The Special Teachings on Dependent Origination

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hey Guys! Stream Entry is a very interesting topic for most people who follow this channel and one thing is very important for that:
The Buddha even called this the (only) teaching that is ``special to the Buddhas'' -- everything else can be attained everywhere.
The talk is on the teachings on dependent origination or (non-temporal )``this/that-conditionality''
Today we find out how all of this works at the core and how to put it into practice.
Wisdom and insights in Buddhism are heavily misunderstood and even mystified.
In reality, they can sound quite mundane, yet they turn your world upside down.
They can remove all suffering if you understand dependent origination directly in your experience.
If you want to be beyond death, sickness, and old age, this is what you must understand!

So what you are saying for example is that its not that sankhara causes vinnana, but that identification with sankhara leads to identification with vinnana? Do you have any resources that can help with understanding what exactly is being denoted by each ‘link’ in the chain, and how it causally relates to its neighbours?

That is pretty much it, yes. Concerning resources, I like to only go by the suttas. There you can see many examples of the Buddha saying that e.g. "the aggregates remain standing in the world - but the wise remove longing and desire for them" and similar statements (The only reason freedom from suffering is possible is because it is _not_ in the aggregates even). Same for Feelings, as an example. The Buddha more or less said that "feelings as we know them" vanish, but not the aggregate of feeling itself. The Noble Disciple simple experiences them "detached" (without identification). The Pali Canon is full of similar statements that only really allow for that interpretation if you want to have the entire body of lectures free from contradictions. If you are ok with secondary literature and somewhat versed in philosophy, I would recommend "Wettimuny - The Buddha's Teaching And the Ambiguity of Existence"

What's your view of Goenka retreats. Do they stick to the dharma.?

Hey! I think Saif and I answered a similar question in one of the QnAs. But in short: some of it is in line with the suttas, some of it is not. If you benefit from such a retreat depends fully on how you make use of it and your level of progress. A very advanced practitioner will likely not profit from such a retreat but a beginner can. The problem is, they kinda expect you to do exactly what they say or play from tape and disregard the Suttas on several key points. Even their main body scan method is at best a fringe occurrence in the suttas and definitely not taught like that by the Buddha... that said, for a beginner it can still have certain benefits

Hi Friend, I have a question for you. Even if you understand the dependent origination in this level, you still have a doubt of pre and post ends. How do we verify that sankaara causes rebirth. If we do not care about rebirth and previous births, then it is not a big deal for many people who have a pretty decent life in this world. My understanding is, we need to develop our mind to see previous births as buddha explains, 10, 100, 1000 ...expanding kalpas and shrinking kaplas. and come to a conclusion. That makes sense even in terms of statistics, to see the full spectrum you need enough data. Or one may trap in the hell realm for many lives and may come to a conclusion that only the hell exists beside human realm if he can only see 10 lives. What is your thought on this?

Hey! The buddha explained that "those who are inclined that way" can develop their minds in a way where they can see their past lives. The way to do so would be a very firm establishment in Samadhi, which allows for "any state that can be realized to be realized". The Buddha himself looked at his past lives and mainly came to the conclusion that he cannot find a point where it all started - not so much to verify rebirth as a whole. Seeing past lives can be one way out of many to create a sense of urgency to escape the cycle of rebirth and death. If the Sekha can bring forth that motivation by other means, then that is also fine. That said, if one still has doubt, then there might be the Right View, but still not the fruit of Stream Entry. With Stream Entry, such questions usually lose all their previous importance. Cheers!

@@TheDhammaHub Thank you for your reply. I understand it now. But the question remains. May be that is my level of understanding as you mentioned. There is no reliable means of verifying the link Bhawa -> Jati even if you realize the Stream Entry. What happens to the Five Khandas after that, Does it cease? or does it continue? Those are the questions one may have. I would like to point out Chulla Hatti Padopama sutta for further clarification of this point. One who sees dhamma, sees me, one who sees dhamma who sees dependent origination. Buddha explains how to see him in that sutta. 🙏

@@odtoyreviews The 5 aggregates "affected by clinging" vanish more or elss completely. The "regular" 5 aggregates remain standing, however. As long as there is a body, there is also experience, even for an arahant. With the breakup of the body, the aggregates do also break apart. Concerning Bhava and Jati, I would suggest to think of it more in term of "birth applies" just like "death and suffering apply". Without Bhava, those things no longer apply to you and that may very much be verified. That said, if you really put your mind to it, the Suttas very much tell you what must be done to see past lives etc. it is just that that is a _very_ difficult task if you make that a precondition for further practcie, as an example.

@@TheDhammaHubSo if one escapes the cycle of rebirth then what. Eternal non existence? I have always been a little confused by this. Life is tough at times but I would rather return than end up an eternal nothing. I know many of the Mahayana sutras do speak of the Tathagata as being sovereign, and being able to traverse all realms.

Can you clarify the 7 grains of sand left over?

Once you have reached Stream Entry, you start feeling your feelings "detached". You are no longer affected by them the same way as before. The vast majority of suffering that you have previously experiences has fallen off and is a mere shadow of what it was before. If you previously experienced a "whole earth" worth of suffering, all that remains is suffering worth about 7 tiny grains of sand.
