Hey Guys! Have you ever wondered what Stream Entry REALLY is and why there can be such a thing as ``no turning back''?
Well, if you are not spiritually inclined, you probably don't even know what it is, but for those who are interested, this video might be very interesting.
While there are countless names for Stream Entry, they all point at the same thing, and today we learn what that is!
It is difficult to understand how Stream Entry can be irreversible.
This is due to popular wrong views.
Dhamma is all about non-doing of the unwholesome.
You cannot get there by DOING a method.
Stream Entry is the complete understanding of how to escape suffering -- not a mythical experience!

    This video brings me relief. I feel like I’m off the hook from following the breath to the ends of the Earth. I can literally just sit there and feel the goodness of having nothing to do.

    I was stuck in that "blip" Buddhism for so long. Thankfully, by never giving up I did come across the real dhamma eventually. Took me 17 years of confusion, jumping from one master to the next.

    @@TheDhammaHub Yes! I hadn't made zero progress though, as I had understood non-self and couldn't go back on that knowledge even if I wanted to. Like your duck/dog analogy. I wish I could go back for a long time because all I could see was impermanence and suffering, but I hadn't really seen the escape yet. In the next 15 years, I made no progress. I would cycle between periods of practice and then giving up, as my methods brought me no real relief (belly watching 😅). But I was unable to let go. Tme and again, I would have periods of depression and I would consume dhamma talks and books like a mad man. Noble search or mental derangement, right! I didn't realise that the work lay with letting go of craving towards feelings here and now. It's so obvious, but somehow that eluded me even though it's in plain sight. I also didn't understand the practice of non-greed, non-aversion and non-delusion. I thought belly watching would magically lead me to these states. Actually practically relinquishing these states? It didnt cross my mind. I was stuck in modern mindfulness methods half wandering whether that blipping out Buddhism was the answer. I couldn't make up my mind about it since I knew that I had understood non-self without "blipping out" and had experienced such blipping out moments with no effect from them. Yet, not being free from suffering, maybe I just hadn't blipped out long enough lol. And don't get me started on the jhana controversies. Wasted a good few years there too. This mad search makes me believe in rebirth. Why would I be so stubborn about the dhamma, immediately converting upon first hearing about it despite an atheist upbringing and all my friends going the opposite direction, if it was not the result of past life actions? I certainly hadn't done anything meritorious in this life as teenager which would explain this level of good luck (discovering the Buddha's teaching). It's strange how when you finally see the truth, you are baffled by how you were possibly confused before. Hindsight is 20/20.

    @@kzantal After seeing it, it is indeed hard to understand how others could _not_ see it ;D (even though it took everyone eons to arrive at the Dhamma too). It is a bit like learning to add numbers on paper. It is intimidating as a child and hard to do, but once you understand it, you cannot understand how others cannot understand xD

    "when you have incorporated doubt into the framework of anicca"... as doubt and natural skepticism is my current barrier, this phrase hit me strongly. I need to think more carefully about this. I just wanted to thank you for what you are doing.

    Buddha often recommended to either be discussing Dharma, or maintain the Aryan silence/ aka meditation. The term "silence" as a quality for meditation seems appropriate for the "non-doing" quality.

    Just a small correction: Sotāpanna has nothing to do with Pañña (wisdom), it is sota+āpanna, āpanna is a past participle and means something like 'entered upon'.

    Interesting! Well, even if the etymology does not represent wisdom, all the descriptiosn the Suttas give us focus on nothing but that. But will keep that in mind - I am not too invested into Pali

    Technically, the Anapanasati Sutta was directed at people who _already had_ Stream Entry. So what most people lack when it comes to Stream Entry is virtue. people cannot see their intentions clearly at all times and thus they don't know what actions to restrain. So its not so much about not having read the right teaching or the right method, it is much more that people do not bring the necessary foundation for the insight of Stream Entry to find footing

    What ceases is not experience as a whole, that would not be too liberating. What ceases are craving, clinging, self, and suffering. Experience stays more or less how it is with the only difference that there is no longer any craving or suffering on account of it

    Do you believe stream entry is possible for a westerner in the USA who works a regular job 40 hours a week . Or do you believe some periods of asceticism and retreats in a monastery are nessisary 🤔

    I am 100% certain that Stream Entry is possible if you are willing to make some "sacrifices" when it comes to sensual engagement. Many householders in the Suttas were very busy too and even said so and were still able to become Stream Enterers. So if you make Dhamma practice a priority, you can "enjoy" the freedom that the Buddha described. Once you are there, you can reassess what you want to do further. That said, it is _not possible_ to still indulge in sensuality, instant gratification, company at all times etc. and make it to Stream Entry.. those 2 are mutually exclusive. BUT you can totally not do many of the things most people do and then it makes little difference if you are a monk/ascetic or a householder. In fact, in the Suttas there were a _LOT_ of "lay people" with very high attainments!

    @@TheDhammaHub I am 100% celebate . No girlfriend . Everybody makes fun of me. Who cares they don't understand the suffering attainments bring. But I still need to work. I am only able to meditate about 2 hours a day . Do you think 4 hours would be better?

    @@matthewrousseau2982 Hey! It is not so much about the work itself. You can and in fact _must_ also "practice" _while_ you work. The biggest chunk of the practice before Stream Entry is about "clarifying your intentions" and that is very much something you can do at _all times_ and not just on the meditation cushion. You must _always_ know _why_ you do certain things. Based on that, you can the _stop doing_ the unwholesome actions. Dhamma is quite literally about _NOT DOING_ harmful (unwholesome) things and you can _very much_ not act in harmful ways while you work. It is an extreme misconception that "the bulk of the practice" happens on the cushion. Quite the contrary, most of it happens during other activities. Wen you make sure that you do NOT act based on greed, aversion, and the urge to distract yourself at all times, you are already very close to Stream Entry. NOT doing certain things is very much possible at all times and not just while sitting. That is why Dhamma practice _IS_ sustainable for almost all people. It is just that many people misunderstand what Dhamma practice actually is. Hope that helps!

    @@matthewrousseau2982 Oh, and celibacy is very good btw - just make sure that that is actually what you _want_ - in the end, it is about the "mental value" sexuality has for you. If you just don't do it because you cant but would immediately jump at an opportunity that presents itself, then that would be "tainted celibacy".
