It caused an endless loop of back and forth searching for the the next visible character, fyi. The code was just a simple "If character invisible, check next character", but 'next character' depended on whether it was left to right or right to left, so if you put left to right next to right to left next to left to right... the function determining which character you selected would get stuck in an endless loop of going back and forth, back and forth, until the app or OS crashed.

There was one time when I had a slide out phone back in like 2010-2012... middleschool-highschool days for me and I was just bored one day and decided to just mash on the keyboard until I couldn't type anymore and sent it to a friend and realized that I had accidentally created something that caused another certain brand phones to crash and reboot which at least a couple of my friends had. So I had the message saved, hell I think it even crashed my phone if I read it and would have to send it without looking at it if I remember correctly. It was my favorite trolly thing to do~ Ah good times before becoming a 26yo that now has constant existential crises. ^_^

A lot of these 'bugs' are just people very creatively trying to find something that will crash a system. You very rarely nowadays encounter a bug that you could reasonably expect to come across in regular use.

In my town we had a massive recue effort yesterday. Somebody had reported an unconcious person floating in the river. Firefighters, Police, with boats, a helicopter, all you can imagine. They managed to save the person, only it wasn't a person - it was a coconut.

Zero-width invisible characters are the bane of my existence at work. I'm a customer support rep for a bank and handle the web app and site for customer use. I can't begin to count the number of calls I get from screaming people livid that they can't log in even though they're using the right username and password. Turns out mobile devices apparently really like using that line break-indicating invisible character and stick it right into the beginning or end of the text box for the username on our app and site, and the only way to stop it from happening is erase the contents of the box completely and start again. Trying to explain this to angry people is like trying to convince a hungry bear to leave a picnic.

This problem of "Nobody has ever tested x with specific/ malformed y" is actually solvable (fuzzing). In hindsight I'm quite surprised to see that a text renderer hasn't been tested this way beforehand.

The thing I like about this is, as a screen reader user, a lot of these things don't really affect me. For example, if someone was to use an RTL character on a website, from what I understand my screen reader would likely just read anything normally and if I'm not using my limited vision to look at the screen, I might not even notice.
