    I can't tell a difference between 48 and 60 FPS in a video, but when playing a game, I notice instantly when FPS changes from 60 even to just 50. It's in the "feel" of the controls. It's not gamebreaking by any means, just noticeable.

  • @Jadder88z

    @Jadder88z

    That's a result of input latency. The time between your input and the most recent buffered frame displaying on your monitor. Higher FPS just reduces this input latency as a more recent frame, which has been calculated based on your inputs, is displayed. That is why higher FPS gaming will feel more responsive. It is this responsiveness you can "feel", but your eyes would really be incapable of perceiving just the change in frame rates when you're talking about say 100fps vs 140fps - though I can certainly "feel" the input latency difference between them.

    @@Jadder88z no you can definitely see a difference between 50-60 or 90-144, swiping my mouse left to right while in an fps running at 60fps vs 144 is a huge difference in fluidity and has nothing to do with latency.

  • @OGPatriot03

    @@KezJUNGLIST Yes, it's visual, not just input latency related obviously. My brother's PC is right next to mine, and I can guess with great accuracy what FPS hes getting on a Freesync Display (That's Adaptive Refresh rate) with a margin of error that's probably in ms per frame rather than FPS which just means a 10 FPS difference between 60 and 50 is WAY bigger than the difference between 144 and 134. Near 60 FPS a change in 2 FPS even on an adaptive refresh rate display is immediately noticeable and visually jarring to someone used to 144/165 refresh rate gaming. 60-70-80 and 90 being distinct to me. I would say after 110 FPS the motion becomes extremely fluid and it gets harder to tell the difference but if you are gaming at 165 FPS EVEN 120 FPS will feel somewhat choppy by comparison and 80 FPS will feel down right awful! Play at 5k res at 40 FPS or so and all of the sudden 80 FPS is so smooth it will make you dizzy!

And its 2022 better to improve more and monitor should be able to run diffrent areas of the monitor in diffrent frame rates, like when watching youtube, 24hz video looks smooth and true because that part of screen is true 24hz meanwhile other parts are still 120, 144 or what ever your monitor is. Actually as a quick add on to your point about frame rate being an added point, one of the examples you showed was “spider man into the spider-verse” which used frame rate in a really interesting way. Early on in the movie the main character (Miles) is animated at half of the frame rate of the world around him. The idea was to make him seem a bit clumsy by keeping him frozen every other frame, but then as he becomes more confident in himself later on in the movie he becomes animated in the same frame rate as everything else. It’s a really great example of using different frame rates for artistic purposes.

    (3:00) This video felt randomly stuttery at 60 FPS, and I couldn't tell why. It wasn't something I could _see_ directly, but just something I felt. Like the video playback wasn't running perfectly, maybe repeating a frame here or there. Then CD confirms this by saying it was playing in 48. - I might not be able to tell if a video is 30 or 60, but if you switch between 30 and 60, the difference during the switch is noticeable.

    It's called frame pacing lol KZread uploads can only ever be a single framerate throughout, and CD tried showing the difference between several kinds of framerates in a 60FPS upload. This means the only playback that was actually correct was the 30 and 60fps moments and animation. Everything else was either 24FPS which suffers from 3:2 duplication (every even frame is held 3 times, every odd 2 times, which is definitionally stuttery), and at "48fps" every 4th frame is duplicated. If you ever notice jitter in videogames, this is why. Humans are actually VERY good at picking out when things are out of synch, when we get used to what actual smooth motion is like.

    @@stealthis yes, but in the context of movies most modern TVs can deal effectively with judder, either through adaptive refresh rates as you said or frame interpolation, black frame insertion or even if the panel is 120/240hz and not adaptive the frames will divide evenly so each frame is consistently repeated as opposed to an odd ratio. However the video is pre rendered and running at 60fps regardless so you're forced to deal with the irregular repeated frames causing judder, thats kinda what I meant.

    @@spookmeister4528 It does actually have jitter, because the output framerate is 60fps and to display 48fps on a 60fps render, you need to either interpolate or freeze every 4th frame. If you choose the latter option (which is what CD did in this case), you’ll see jitter. If he had interpolated every 4th frame or uploaded a separate video in 48fps, the difference would have been much less noticable.

    I noticed that too and was really impressed. It's a really neat touch, especially considering that this video was released about a month before the interlacing one. I'm sure they were already working on it as well so had it planned, but it's still a damn cool effect. Pretty rare that youtube creators really play into the medium that well.

    Interesting history lesson, I guess gamers are quite familiar with this. We had to play slower version of games for years in Europe, compared to Japan/US. And yes, I can't tell the difference between 48 and 60 on movies, the difference between 24 and 48 when watching The Hobbit in theater was really disorienting to me. However when gaming even slight variances in the framerate become immediately noticeable, more so in certain genres, especially shooters. I'n not a purist that insists on gaming in 120 FPS or even 60 FPS, most games are fine in stable 30 FPS. But a game that drops from 60 into the low 40s constantly is immediately unpleasant to play. My hypothesis variances in frame-rates are easier noticeable than differences in constant frame rates (especially for games).

    3:05 I mean it depends a lot on what kind of animation it is. A steady panning shot composed of sharply contrasting parts for example is going to look very different between changes as little as 48 to 60. Playing games at 60 compared to 144 the only real difference I ever notice is camera movement smoothness but I really notice it.
