How Teeth Indicated Status Throughout History

Ойын-сауық

A pearly-white smile wasn't always the status symbol it is today. In fact, people in the past frequently blackened or filed their teeth - some even replaced their teeth with gold as an indication of their wealth. Throughout history, teeth have been linked to status, and as such, dental fashion has changed over time.

    I remember being stunned what it was revealed that medieval people actually had really great teeth because they hadn’t yet been introduced to sugar.

  • @marzipanmango

    @marzipanmango

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hunter gatherers had great teeth because the only starch/sugars they ate were from wild tubers, nuts, veg and fruits. They ate a lot of meat and fat. When we switched to an agrarian lifestyle though we started eating a lot more grains, which are very starchy. The poor people in the middle ages had better teeth than the rich (who ate refined sugars which are much worse for teeth than complex carbs) but they still would have suffered from dental issues, just not to the same extent.

    A fun addition to these facts: in some poorer countries in abt 13-15 many people would wear false braces for fashion, but the trend started because braces are extremely expensive and it was a way to show wealth. (If your family could afford an orthodontist it means your rich basically). I don’t know if this trend is still happening now though.

Too bad Philippine myths are not much discussed in today's subject here in the Philippines even though it should be part of our literature and history. Some more info on Ohaguro. Like you said it originated with the noble women of the court. The reason why these women began to paint their faces white was so their beauty could be seen even in the dimmest candle light. Like you said, it made their teeth appear yellow so blackening became the solution. This was passed down to courtesans who were considered lower nobility, then to wives which Geisha were considered Married to the arts, so they blackened their teeth as well. It was actually practiced by the vast majority of the population who could afford it. Not mentioned above was the fact that it actually helped protect teeth from rot and decay. As you said, it did get "banned" but Geisha and kabuki actors still practice this tradition. For Geisha, the period before they transition from apprentices to professionals, which is called Sakkou, in more traditional Kyoto, most girls opt for the Ohaguro look. This isn't the same method used in the past and doesn't actually stain the teeth. Instead they paint their teeth with a waxy paste made of a mixture that includes squid ink which comes off super easily, making them need to reapply it throughout the night as food and hot drinks will wipe it away. ^^

    I went through a 4 to 5 month period of only brushing every 2 days and suffered for it bc it gave me cavities. ☹️ Could've been worse tho, I cut refined sugar from my diet a few years ago. Brush twice a day and have your teeth cleaned every 6 months people! Don't drag things out and delay trips to the dentist.

    Look on the bright side: dentistry now is much safer, efficient, and painless than it ever has been, and will only continue to improve. So while yeah going to the dentist sucks, at least you typically won't be in intense pain and risk more infections unless you try really hard.

    @Scott Fantazia Its expensive but so are many other things that the same people who say they can't afford to see a dentist spend money on. Its all about priorities. It also behooves one to remember that if you visit your dentist every 6 months for a cleaning then often a problem is caught early on instead of when it becomes a huge and painful problem that will definitely cost a lot. Kinda like how you change the oil in your car regularly so it doesn't cause a major and expensive problem later on.
