How spontaneous brain activity keeps you alive - Nathan S. Jacobs
View full lesson: ed.ted.com/lessons/how-spontan...
The wheels in your brain are constantly turning, even when you're asleep or not paying attention. In fact, most of your brain’s activities are ones you’d never be aware of … unless they suddenly stopped. Nathan S. Jacobs takes us inside the always active, surprisingly spontaneous brain.

try this, control your breaking taking deep breathes. In 7 seconds out 11. Keep doing that for a minute or two, and practice it while you do something else. If you practice it while doing another repetitive task it becomes like walking. Your aware of it but you can pretty much do it on automatic

How does the heart work? I know that sinoatrial node spontaneously depolarizes in a rythm, keeping the heart cells contracting in a specific pattern. But aren't the PNS/CNS involved in _any_ of this?
@bhavishuvishu5071

That is why SA node is called 'auto'excitable.It doesn't need any help from CNS/PNS.

The neural connections can tell the heart to increase the heart beat or decrease it, but it can't regulate the heartbeat on its own. Hearts in organisms are of 2 broad types - neurogenic, myogenic. Neurogenic hearts are controlled by the brain totally,like in insects. Myogenic hearts don't need brain's help.

It's because mylion(the weird marshmallow stuff you see on the stems on neurons) Isn't fully developed in the pre-frontal cortex and the frontal lobe meaning the neurons there don't have the marshmallows which a neuron with them is faster than one without meaning the neurons there are slower than the Emotional Amigula and the *Yeeehaaaahhhh* parts and brainstem.
@NoriMori1992

Rashad Because critical thinking is not instinctive. It's something you have to actively learn, and most people don't, due to lack of knowledge, opportunity, or interest.
As complex as the brain is, there are still people who say there's no God. SMH 😔

being much smarter than we really are...how? All our 'smartness' comes from a brain or does it?
omg what if we slept with our eyes open... do u knw how creepy that'll look lol
@perfectlybalancedasallthin9319

Actually, some people have tried that, but I don't advise you to try it though. If the eyes remains open for prolonged amounts of time, it could result in damage as it won't get the required 'lubrication' that it receives when you blink.
You do not try not to think. You simply acknowledge in the moment that you are thinking about something INSTEAD of paying attention to your breathing, your body, or some other aspect of consciousness. This requires no effort beyond the initial bringing attention back. You do not TRY and force thinking to stop. Don't say it like that.
