SPIKE LEE DIRECTOR’S CHAIR
Spike Lee is one of the preeminent auteurs in American cinema. He built a reputation on a foundation of fierce independence and an unmistakable artistic voice. In this video, we collected Spike Lee interviews from throughout his career. From his film school days, including winning a student Academy Award, to winning another Oscar for writing BlacKkKlansman 3 decades later.
WHO IS SPIKE LEE
Spike Lee was born on March 20, 1957 in Atlanta but spent his formative years in Brooklyn. In fact, there are few filmmakers as closely identified with their hometown as Lee is with that NY borough. After attending film school at NYU, he began his career with confrontational and poignant films while helping to usher in the independent film movement of the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.
SPIKE LEE JOINTS
In 1989, Spike Lee wrote and directed a landmark film called Do the Right Thing. It deals with racial tensions that boil to the surface and eventually erupt on the hottest day of the summer. The film is the exemplar for Lee’s ability to challenge his audiences with uncomfortable topics and no easy answers. As he explains, “For drama, you gotta have two people butt heads. And it elevates the drama when they’re both right.”
For his epic ode to Malcolm X, the studio wanted Lee to cut it down from 3 hours to 2. But Spike refused and explained that to truly honor the evolution of Malcolm’s life, the story needs to unfold organically. And when the budget ran low, Lee had to cold-call everyone he knew to help get the film finished. It is obstacles like these that have molded Lee’s work ethic: you gotta fight for your film.
Spike Lee doesn’t get the recognition he deserves. For over 4 decades, he has worked in various genres and mediums, like documentaries and commercials, and carved out a singular voice. If you’re a filmmaker looking for a guiding light through the insane world of filmmaking, Spike Lee is the one you need.

I currently make films without a big budget and I act in them too because I can't afford actors. And seeing Spike Lee started some what the same way, inspires me so much. I might not achieve the same things or I might not be as good as Spike all my life, but one thing I learned watching this video is to be consistent and not ever stop learning, you'll eventually reach a height that you could've never imagined you'd reach.

@@mcdonaldsemployee4979 I mean, it is what it is. If he were giving a presentation to children under the age of 12 I would say it’s in appropriate. And his films are rated R. POOR spike lee. when did tarantino django come out, he said: "American slavery was not a Sergio Leone Spaghetti Western. It was a Holocaust. My ancestors are slaves stolen from Africa. I will honor them." you understand, if spike's ancestors had not been kidnapped from Africa by terrible white colonists, now he would be a Liberian or Cameroonian director, and would make much cooler films than now. and an essay from the studiobinder about him would be more interesting.

This was more of his philosophy of filmmaking rather than how he directs a film. I was thinking we would get more into specific shots that are iconic to him, his use of montage, his classic dolly shot, insight on the way he writes scripts. I'd love another video getting into his technicalities!

I think we heard the explanation why in the excerpt from S. Jackson with his comparison to Tarantino. He mentioned that Tarantino will really get into the weeds of the motivation, framing, and thought process of the characters while directing, meanwhile Spike Lee mostly has trust in the actors chosen to have a similar vision to his own and intuit from there. But yes, of course it would have been nice to get his reasoning behind his iconic dolly shot and use of Red. But still, maybe it's one of those things that he just intuited to be great for the life of the film and continued using it.

How to be like spike lee/Spike Lee's philosophy/advice: Fight for your film Find your lane Challenge your audience. Don't play the audience. Give them adult mature topics/subjects to think and talk about. Never stop learning. Akira Kurosawa said there's a university of filmmaking still out there to learn. And Learn a little bit of everything e.g. acting, directing, cinematography, lighting n sound and etc. Put in the work/put the work in

My mother worked a lot . After my grandmother passed and all of my uncles and aunts left the nest , and my grandfather moving out , it was just me and my momma I was home alone a lot as a teenager because my mother either worked the evening or graveyard shift . Being home alone had it's perks . I thought of girls , girls , girls 😁

One time the head basketball coach came to visit my grandparents and he told them that my youngest uncle and some more players got caught smoking reefer . My grandparents were grateful for the information . When the head coach left , my uncle got a whooping .
