I find all well made swords and knives can be considered art. I think it's the tremendous effort, wisdom and knowledge that a master swordsmith puts in to a katana and it's inherent beauty, that lends a mystical quality to it. Indeed, I do see them as works of art. As works of passion.
When he was telling the story of the sword cutting the stone, demon slayer popped into my head when Tanjiro was training.
Japanese culture is so fascinating to me. Honestly I could hear about stuff like this all day because it is so cool to me, thank you for the great and informative videos Shogo.

Awesome!! I didn't know those curiosities about katanas 🤩
thank you for a lovely video........ much appreciated from a guy in love of japanes history
And now I understand better the lore baked into Demon Slayer. Tanjiro's instructor actually wears a Tengu mask. And Tanjiro slices through thw giant stone with his Nichirin with the help of Sabito. Thank you Shogo.
So happy to have come across your channel! 💚 And of course I'm watching all your vids keep going master! And yesss this is really what we are looking for when we want to study the tradition thank you

Osuriage odachi from the Nanbokucho era can cut extremely well, though I wouldn't recommend using one for that. I saw an osuriage ko mihara with a 6 body kiritsukemei for sale once. Sold very quickly.
Hi Shogo, I really enjoy your videos and podcasts. This one reminded me of when my grandfather gave me my first jack knife. I was six years old when he gave me my first jack knife. It was a red Swiss army knife. I was so excited that I went out right away to start trying to carve a stick. About 3 minutes later my grandfather gave me a band-aid for my first cut from that knife. Then he showed me how to carve sticks with it.
Lets be honest..the sharpest weapon is our moms sandals at 1 am when she catches you wearing shoes on the tatami mats or carpet. It has a -10 morale debuff and +25 persuasion stats
I love these videos. Makes me want to visit Japan even more.

Shogo, that rock formation's feature is called frost wedging. You see it a lot anywhere where water can freeze and thaw repeatedly. A small crack is forced wider and wider by the crystallization and expansion of the water over many years.
hello shogo. congratulations for your videos, even if I don't understand anything because unfortunately I don't speak English. you fascinated me the world of iaido. I've just started following you and I'd like to know if you've made videos on how to start the art of iaido. you are very nice. I LOVE JAPAN.
Togo, have you done a tutorial on your methods of keeping your katana sharp?
Nice! I should list down the myth and legends of samurai and make a pilgramage trip next time i travel Solo to Japan - with you as my guide, for the history lesson 😉
Your swordskill in Tameshigiri looks awesome compared to your earliest videos few years ago.

As well as the stiffness. I feel it's more the other properties of the blade that make them so effective at cutting rather than just the edge, although many of them are of course extremely sharp as well.

A katana like any blade is as sharp as the steel used & as sharp as you wish to sharpen it .🙏⛩️ Both technique and a sharp blade as you mentioned are equal to each other for clean tameshigiri.

Just by looking at it....... it cut me.
I love sharp blades and after seeing this I’m a new dan
Not sabito litteraly helping him😭
3:38 thats so much demon slayer
ALL swords meant for combat would be kept very sharp. There used to be a myth that European swords weren't kept very sharp for various silly reasons. Yet we know a dull sword can't preform its basic function in battle or a duel very well. Surviving treatises and fight books from the Medieval period also depict blades doing things that would require them to be incredibly sharp, such as taking off a man's hand in a simple wrist powered counter cut. Speaking in general terms, we can be sure all cultures kept their swords sharpened. Why? Because people weren't unintelligent, even though Victorian historical sources would like us to believe everyone before them was. Obviously a blade must be sharp in order to effectively do as it was meant to do. Logic dictates people would therefore try to keep them sharp.
Can you test the Katana on cow bones? Something that I always wondered about.
I like this chanhel.
Hello mister shogo i wanted to ask about how were the warrior monks

Did you edit this video with katana too? Too many jumpcuts sometimes.
should there be special permission to have katana at home (those which are sharp)?
@LetsaskShogo
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for leaving a comment! Yes, the katanas you own, all must each have something called the "registration card", that's issued by the police. However you don't need any licenses, because katanas are regarded as a piece of art now in Japan!
In my opinion, from the beginning of the video he mentions how katana is considered to be the sharpest weapon of the world . And I fully 100% agree with this, I was practicing sword flourishing and spinning to see if I can incorporate certain cutting methods ( I then realized it’s completely pointless because I look foolish and irresponsible) I then accidentally cut one of my wooden staves pretty deep for not even going at high or heavy speed .
My guess would be that the stone fractured into two during an earthquake and someone saw there an opportunity to tell a tall tale or to enhance their own reputation or that of their Dojo.
Curved weapons are normally made for cutting. Katana are made in such a way that it holds a curve and still have a pretty decent point for thrusting. The curve doesn't give as much advantage for adding more contact to the cut in comparison to the weapons reach(in comparison to extremely curved swords), but as far as I have seen, the curve makes it very forgiving to cut with, because the blade always wants to point towards the edge, contributing to better edge alignment, and better cutting overall. So, I think the curve contributes to ease of use (but not to the point of being idiot-proof).
Its interesting that Japan culture has many different myths about swords or katanas.... And as a young boy inreally love katanas due to tgeir simplicity and design....
Who realized that the story Shogo was talking about us just like demon slayers anime
Mith: one of the Tenka Goken(I think) was told to able to cut a dragonfly in half when it landed on the blade
I wonder if they train to cut mats and bamboo but account for the bone.
the swordsman was definitely tanjiro
Would you be so kind as to talk about the silk test? I have wondered if such a test was real or just movie myth.
I love the Samurai, I really do, I have Katanas, I love anything ninja like 👍

@solsinclair1909

Tameshigiri is just test cutting. Any serious japanese sword discipline may include it in modern times using bamboo, in historical times test cutting on bodies was a way of initiating newly made swords.
There are a lot of extraordinary bladesmith in Indonesia. I have purchased a katana which actually can cut nails and medium size steel chain.
There is a third variant in the sword's quality besides the sharpness of the sword and ability of the swordsmen. That third variant is the talent of tge pisher to put an edge on the blade.
Damn I love how anime’s always have third walls and real myths lire and lessons in them

To test if your katana is sharp just slide it across your finger if it cuts its sharp, if not it’s not
とどめだ 3:48 ?
I think it’s interesting to touch on the sharpness myth; katanas are not in fact sharper than any other freshly sharpened swords. I could get into edge geometry and such, but that is a different story. What I believe to be the origin of this sharpness myth, actually has more to do with the scabbards of the time. When the british (and other countries) came to japan after swords had largely fallen behind on the gun, they noticed the katanas were very sharp in comparison to their own swords. The difference? British soldiers/officers carried service sharpened (not very sharp, somewhat comparable to getting a factory sharpened kitchen knife) swords in metal scabbards; the metal of these scabbards would dull the blades more than the wooden sayas in which the katana was usually carried. However, since the katana is differentially hardened, it does retain an edge better than a lot of other methods; a downside to that being that the katana is more easily permanently bent, for example.

Ten thousand in a year how’s that going?
