Hi Shogo, I really enjoy your videos and podcasts. This one reminded me of when my grandfather gave me my first jack knife. I was six years old when he gave me my first jack knife. It was a red Swiss army knife. I was so excited that I went out right away to start trying to carve a stick. About 3 minutes later my grandfather gave me a band-aid for my first cut from that knife. Then he showed me how to carve sticks with it.

ALL swords meant for combat would be kept very sharp. There used to be a myth that European swords weren't kept very sharp for various silly reasons. Yet we know a dull sword can't preform its basic function in battle or a duel very well. Surviving treatises and fight books from the Medieval period also depict blades doing things that would require them to be incredibly sharp, such as taking off a man's hand in a simple wrist powered counter cut. Speaking in general terms, we can be sure all cultures kept their swords sharpened. Why? Because people weren't unintelligent, even though Victorian historical sources would like us to believe everyone before them was. Obviously a blade must be sharp in order to effectively do as it was meant to do. Logic dictates people would therefore try to keep them sharp.

In my opinion, from the beginning of the video he mentions how katana is considered to be the sharpest weapon of the world . And I fully 100% agree with this, I was practicing sword flourishing and spinning to see if I can incorporate certain cutting methods ( I then realized it’s completely pointless because I look foolish and irresponsible) I then accidentally cut one of my wooden staves pretty deep for not even going at high or heavy speed .

Curved weapons are normally made for cutting. Katana are made in such a way that it holds a curve and still have a pretty decent point for thrusting. The curve doesn't give as much advantage for adding more contact to the cut in comparison to the weapons reach(in comparison to extremely curved swords), but as far as I have seen, the curve makes it very forgiving to cut with, because the blade always wants to point towards the edge, contributing to better edge alignment, and better cutting overall. So, I think the curve contributes to ease of use (but not to the point of being idiot-proof).

People also think that the katanas are always razor sharp but they are usually meant for heavy cutting instead

I think it’s interesting to touch on the sharpness myth; katanas are not in fact sharper than any other freshly sharpened swords. I could get into edge geometry and such, but that is a different story. What I believe to be the origin of this sharpness myth, actually has more to do with the scabbards of the time. When the british (and other countries) came to japan after swords had largely fallen behind on the gun, they noticed the katanas were very sharp in comparison to their own swords. The difference? British soldiers/officers carried service sharpened (not very sharp, somewhat comparable to getting a factory sharpened kitchen knife) swords in metal scabbards; the metal of these scabbards would dull the blades more than the wooden sayas in which the katana was usually carried. However, since the katana is differentially hardened, it does retain an edge better than a lot of other methods; a downside to that being that the katana is more easily permanently bent, for example.
