Nah it was a fair deal; before restoration, which cost over $3k, it was worth about $5k, and he got paid $1500. He got paid almost a third of the value of the thing, that is fair. He could have googled Japanese Arms Specialists in the area and got an expert estimation and probably had it restored himself for the full value (if he was in a position to pay for restoration), but he wanted the convenience of walking into to a generalist and walking out with some money half an hour later, so that is what happens.

You have to understand that a majority of this show is staged and they make-up plotlines and 'drama' even though it's all scripted. At this point of the show they were all millionaires and didn't even work in the shop outside of shooting the show. They wouldn't have cared whether the sword was legit or not, a 1500 dollar loss would be nothing to them.

I used to know a guy in America, a lawyer, who had bought a samurai sword from an elderly couple in Tokyo when he was in the military back in the 1950s. Back in the 1990s, he decided to see if it was worth it to send it back. Turned out it was over 400 years old, and had belonged to a lord. They couldn't find the original owners, so the lawyer donated it to the museum at the castle where the lord had ruled.
