How Sabarimala impacts Menstrual Health - Sinu Joseph's talk on her book Women and Sabarimala

Sinu Joseph throws light on how temples like Sabarimala can disturb women's menstrual cycles, and why the traditional restrictions on women's entry to Sabarimala have a scientific basis.

This is true scientific temperament. She started off having no preconceived notions and presented whatever she learnt as part of her exploration. Atleast some of the aspects that Ms. Joseph touches upon in this talk have been spoken of or written down by various Yogis. In today's age, Sadhguru has made a great push for the original science of consecration as also made us aware how Hatha yoga addresses the influences that the earth, moon and the sun have on the human physiology and mind. This is awesome, thank you 🙏!!

Very True .. many swamis have explained this but since their are sadhus /swamis or gurus they are not taken seriously. I remeber Sadhguru expkaininb this as well on several occasions but who actually listens.. But that's of the Sinu for taking this initiative and actually making the effort to explain to the entire judicial panel

When a woman starts addressing with facts and truths; all myths are demystified because we have been taught for the past few decades that most of our cultures are male-centric, full of myths and superstitions. Let's not deny that there were myths and superstitions too. And the sad truth is that we indians never try to explore and investigate our rich cultures untill a "gora" "Firangi" turns up, use it and introduce to us with a bussiness purpose and make a fool of ourselves by learning our own culture from them which we have abandoned. Late or so, it's good we have started realisng it. She is definitely done the most inexplicable job to us.

@@littlesoul8535 There are spiritual teachers and tantric gurus who have studied this and understands this but most of us disregard them as superstition as they are not academics ( in modern sense ) or English tutored . They talk in local language and hence less attractive for most . Also our education system has made us believe that all that which doesn’t have a western stamp or is not proven by western science is superstition. So many enlightened beings who are not educated or good in social skills were treated as mental or beggars in our own society .

What if a woman choose to enter spiritual path and don't want to continue the physical path anymore? Then according to you, that woman can enter sabarimala?if the answer is yes, then instead of ban, won't an awareness be suitable.an awareness which tell people that those woman who enter the sabarimala will get menstural problems.only if they want to go to spiritual path, then they should enter here.

That's ur assumption right.on what basis are you telling that these women are not interested in moksha?why we need to enforce rules based on our assumptions to others.why don't we create an awareness about the purpose of sabarimala temple and reproductive problems faced by menstrual woman who enters sabarimala.if they are willing to take that risk for attaining moksha, why are you bothered?

@Truth Seeker I agree with you in that part.most of the women protested.and you said "As a rule, most mentruating women going to temple are not interested in moksha" .My point is that rules should not be made under the influence of the majoritie's wishes .it should be based on logic and justice.so those woman who want to attain moksha have the right to enter sabarimala ,right?

The thing is a women ‘s health may be adversely effected due to exposer to extremely powerful energy bodies . What you don’t realise is your a women’s menstrual cycle is very much connected to her psychological health also . Moreover inbthis culture being a women was considered privilege, the fact that a women’s physical body has certain disadvantages for the responsibility of motherhood , she is compensated spiritualy . She is more subtle and receptive to spiritual awakening then a man . A man may be more distractive and required strict adherence or need to perceive more vigorously to achieve spiritual growth . A women need not go through such vigorous spiritual process . And the school of Sabarimala is very vigorous form specifically designed especially for men who have a tendency to be distracted easily by worldly and material distractions . How many women you see getting my into alcohol or other such short cuts to find peace in life , very few isn’t it . It speaks for a women’s stable nature . In such a situation why should women be put through something that will have adverse effect on her physical health. The place called Sabarimala was specifically designed in a monastery form for men who tend to be distracted to experience some spiritual awareness . For women who seek spiritual path can take Deeksha under a suitable guru who can guide her . Not necessary she goes a man’s path . We are different personalities both physically and temperamentally, don’t prescribe common resorts in the name of equality .

@@preethishetty6179 my question is simple.if sabarimala temple cause harm to women whobenter there ,just put a warning board there informing women that these are the consequences they may face.if a woman is ready to take the risk, then why to prevent her from entering temple?

@@sandeepkrishnan3043 There are certain institutions that are gender specific with a reason, they don’t provide entry to other gender . Similarly there are Buddhist monastery where only Male monks get spiritual education . This is for the benifit if the monks who may be disturbed in the path . You see this kind of isolation in Christian convents and monasteries too .Similarly one of the main aspect of the men who take The Sabarimala vrata is celibacy , I don’t know how it is followed Now but as I was a child were I lived the men who took the vrat kept a distance from his family , they lived a bachelors life in a male group separate from their homes . Definitely this was designed to stable their wandering mind . Not all men are capable of resisting the distractions . Since this place is designed for specific reason then again women ‘s entry can distract some men . Is this all necessary. Ayyappan is not the only path for Moksha he is just one path designed for certain people . This is not a Abrahmic faith where like a certain god is the only way for heaven those who don’t go through are doomed to hell . We don’t have such a compulsion. And hence Ayyappan is not a compulsory. He is just a certain school of spirituality. I don’t think it is necessary to distract somebody who may have certain possibilities in his life . If you are a devotee then it means you accept the place and its sanctity as well as sanctions as it is . If not you are not a devotee but just a miscreant who wants to impose himself / herself on others and create trouble. Such mentality should not be encouraged for a healthy society . If we live in a society then we must follow rules . Otherwise tomorrow there are certain rows in public transport or compartments in train or even rest rooms for women only , then in the name of equality men entering those zones may not be appreciated but you will have to just allow them if some one shameless don’t care if women are uncomfortable in their presence.
