How ruthless can Arsenal be this summer?

Спорт

On Wednesday night, Arsenal's Champions League hopes were ended in Munich, in their first quarter-final at that level in 14 years.
Mikel Arteta was left lost for words in how to console his side, but they still remain in the Premier League title race.
So how can the Spaniard ensure the Gunners' season doesn't peter out? How ruthless can they be in this summer's transfer window - or should Arteta be able to get more from the squad already at his disposal?
Ayo Akinwolere is joined by The Athletic's David Ornstein and Art de Roche to discuss and analyse how different Arsenal could look the other side of the summer transfer window.

Exactly! Many even compare him to Xabi Alonso, who doesn't have to compete with Pep in the Bundesliga. Also, how long did it take Klopp to win major titles with Liverpool? M.A. is a good coach, and I just wish he's a little but adaptive and not so rigid with his tactics, and we'd surely win the major trophies

To be fair it's crazy to think that we expected arsenal in the final 4 or the final or even to win it in their very first season back in the competition. I think we will come back much stronger next season when the players realize they belong in those big games. We obviously need timber back: tomiyasu was being asked to play like zinchenko. we need support for martinelli on the left, I would say either rice as the 6 and sign a xhaka esque player or rice as that left sided 8 but with less instruction to fill in the spaces in the middle. We wonder why martinelli isnt the same player this year when we no longer play with zinny or xhaka on the left, both of whom are brilliant at linkup play and linebreaking passes.

We expected it because they had to play Porto and the worst Bayern side we've seen in the last 20 years. Arsenal are bottlers. The worst part about your team is that you demand an ovation for your failures. Can't even beat 4th-placed Villa to win the league. Celebrating a draw against City like it's the Champions League final. GTFOH.

Dont throw the baby out with the bathwater. People dont realise how destructive it would be to let Arteta go given he build this squad. What you dont want is a bunch of players that came in under different managers like at Utd for example, not fitting together. And given that Carlo, Pep and Klopp aren't available, who would you get? But the question you should always ask is, is the manager getting the most out of the squad he works with? That is, within reason and a certain margin for error. Or is it the squad that still needs to go up a level? I think the latter. And Im sure it will. Because Arteta shows how ruthless he can be in order to progress. We dont have a player who scores a half chance, and you wont just find them in the market. The other way is more quality depth to make sure everybody is fresh, and than with age and experience, the likes of Saka will only get better. Most player peak between 25 and 32. We have a big window of oppertunity coming up and the titles will come. Especially as that window comes around the same time as Pep will leave.

  • @Lioness_UTV

Interesting discussion. One thing that stuck out to me is how there seems to be a distinction between the first 11 and the squad players. In 2024 there is ONLY the Squad, yes there is a spine of the team but his lack of rotation of key positions is an issue over a long season. There should be a competitive cover for Saka, so he isn't run into the ground and where he can be challenged to keep improving. As a Villa fan, i have a lot of admiration for the Arsenal team, I think you are having a phenomenal season. Having said that, the win by Villa was a tactical battle. The first half play by Villa was a tactic, a high risk and reward to set up the 2nd half. His objective was to make Arsenal play, push them as much as possible, make them run and move. To accomplish this Villa did have to defend like fiends but it was deemed to be a calculated risk as we are organized and have done it well before. Second half he tweaked the formation and unleashed the players to go forward at full pace as planned. Knowing that his team had conserved energy and Arsenal had not. I only mention this because the lack of rotation over a season has a huge impact in the last 3rd - this is on Arteta.

Its the emotional reaction to the exit and loss to Villa. Just like when a player does not play, all of a sudden HE IS THE ONE who is the perfect answer to all the problems, Arteta is doing a fantastic job, he is the right manager and thinking that we can get someone better is just delusional at this point. This is not a video game where you switch and change things without affecting the overall performance of the team. Mistakes cost us games, not the tactics. Arteta does only trust 13 players, so exhaustion is the reason, we obviously don't have City's bench quality so we run players into the ground. We know that at least 3 players have to be sold in the summer and Saka needs an alternative who does not drop our level of play where that player becomes invisible on the pitch. Timbers injury combined with Tomis and Partey's has significantly affected a lot of players physical levels. COYG! This is still a very good season👏

Technically, Arsenal is ahead of schedule regarding the process. Just looking at the squad upgrading takes time. Arsenal is not Chelsea. We're not signing 7 or 8 players in one window. ❤😂 2-3 players is optimal as in players designed to improve the squad and add options to playing style. For me Fabio Vieira is on the chopping block along with quite a few fringe players. Arsenal are looking for a world-class first XI and a top quality bench. Part of this strategy is upgrading our youth ranks at all levels. Obviously this all takes time and resources but Arsenal have made it clear by supporting Arteta that they are happy with the process. ❤😂

Lets not forget we got more pts last year that some title winning squads (the 1998 one e.g.). This year we are on track for an 85-90 pts season. Its just that City forces you to be near perfect and thats a tall ask for a young squad like ours. However, most of our best players will peak between 2025 and 2030. And with Pep probably leaving, we should set ourselves up to make the most out of that window of oppertunity. Patience gooners. We are not getting the most out of the upcoming years by screaming for Arteta's head or big changes. We have build a great squad and everybody within the club seems to be in alignment (key word for success imo) to do what is needed. Don't undo that. And let's be realistic about CL, because there is a reason why Chelsea and City won the league much earlier that their first CL. The problem is that football isn't played on paper; it is just as much a mental game as it is a physical one. Football teams are teams like every other team, and they too are shaped by their experiences together. With two (and most likely three) consecutive years where the team has choked at the business end of the season, all their defining moments are bitter failures. That creates a psychological hurdle for them which I fear is too high to overcome; they simply can't believe in winning because they've lost too much. Next season will be last chance saloon, assuming it isn't too late already.

Key areas of focus for Arsenal are GK (proprer sweeper keeper with actual GK/shot stopping ability, a hybrid of Raya/Ramsdale really), DM (allows Rice to do more box-box, similar to Xhaka did, and contribute goals whilst providing the metal with mental stability), LB that isn't injury prone (hopefully Timber/Tomi but Zinchenko does not provide enough in pure defending or one-one situations) and an out-out striker that does not hesitate nor lack for confidence in that situation (Kai does a role, but for him to be more effective, you need winger-forwards and Saka/Martinelli don't fit that profile despite having goals in them). The point about Jesus and Zinchenko being outgrown is on point. They are now squad players, the glue-guys for a whole season, with odd starts against lower table and relegation teams. The heavy minutes on starters is so visible to see. The bench depth, as in using them, is also a question over Arteta. The deadwood need to go and players willing to compete are the priority. Egos to the side. EDIT - I think we forget how much of an impact Timber could have had for this campaign. Only need to look at the Community Shield game to see what he offered. Shame unfortunately.

When both Saka, Martinelli and ESR initially burst into the first team all 3 showed the dynamism, creativity, skill and flair facing past defenders, showing dribbling prowess. But all of that flair has been coached out of them over the last few years. You can literally watch Saka dribble and dance past 3 defenders vs his inability to go past a full back 1v1 right now. And I blame Arteta and the coaching staff.*

The challenge for Arsenal now is squad management. Much is said about how much lower Arsenal's wage bill is than the rest of the 'big six'. Those players who are on comparitively lower wages will now want pay rises or they'll leave. That needs to be paid for. Arsenal are already close to FFP but do need to also strengthen their squad. Arsenal's finances are such that I doubt they'll be able to do both. Expect a Saka or Odegard transfer to Man City coming soon!!

And I really refuse to believe we’re selling ESR. There were narratives like this during the year Martinelli was being brought back from injury and coached to play in a slightly different manner. Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah are the two players who will bring that “pure profit”. They’re easily evaluated at £35-40m in this market. They’re obviously not going to clear out the entire bench. That’s mad.

If you question tactical play then you're not really understanding the football Arteta plays. In 2021, after Mourinho beat Arsenal with Spurs, he commended Arteta and the team for the way we strategically play. Mourinho mentioned how Arsenal are able to change shapes by building play with 4-5 players and so on. He said the points on the table and results didn't truly reflect our performances at the time. Mourinho's a pro coach. You're not. There's an intergalactic gap in what you know compared to them.

Arsenal have actually closed the gap between them and City ffrom 5 points to 2 points...so we've improved. ManU and Toon finished 3rd and 4th last year...and where are they this season? Oh yeah..7th and 8th...between 14 and 19 points worse off this year. And this was our 1st season back in the UCL after a long long absence...and we got to the QF. What did ManU and Toon do? Absolutely f all. We're the only team that has shown that we are consistently at the top level of English football reecently. And we will be better next year.

This season, our midfield has been a persistent issue. Acquiring Kai Havertz was a misstep; what we truly needed was a midfielder adept at driving the attack forward. Havertz's ball retention has hindered us, rather than progressing the game. Looking ahead, a midfielder who can support Odegaard in orchestrating the attack is crucial. Diversifying our midfield options would not only alleviate the burden on our captain but also benefit players like Jesus, Saka, and Martinelli.

  • @slyarsenal

New FFP rules are designed to specifically allow big teams to keep spending ridiculous amounts of money. How does Man City, a club with less heritage than Arsenal, Liverpool, Utd, Bayern, Real Madrid, Barca etc earn more commercial revenue than Real Madrid, a team with rich history, heritage, greater worldwide fans? City are funded by State and have cooked the books so many times to mask internal investment that even governing bodies find it difficult to track monies from fabricated offshore companies by the City owners with facades of commercial investment. So if teams are allowed to spend up to 70% of commercial revenue, and for example City earn 1billion, that means they can spend 700m. Now compare that 70% to a team like Burnley who for example makes only 100m, it means they can only spend 70m. How preposterous! PSR rules should remain as they are with a cap of -105m loss over 3 yrs so all teams adhere to the same mark. This is Uefa's greed at work again. Teams like Chelsea and Man city financially doped this league, hence why ffp existed in the first place but now the rules have been changed again to accommodate these teams in fear of sanctions these two teams could face. I knownthe investigation into City remains, but Uefa is throwing them a lifeline even before they've hit the water to drown. The game is corrupt!
