i dont think 'Underrated' is quite the right word to describe Prince. He was rated quite highly while he was alive. He appeared or been written about in every mag that exists or existed. Guitar mag, Drums mag, keyboard mag, piano mag, Bass Mag, but I am with totally in your corner. People will never fly that high again. He deserved the wealth & accolades and we'll be talking about him for decades to come. The Purple Jupiter Symphony.

What nobody ever mentions is he essentially wrote a blues song - but he totally reimagined the genre. There are many blues songs, but this is the last original blues song - building on from Marvin Gaye's 'whats goin on'. This was not 'his' blues ("I've lost my job, my woman ran off"). He was singing the blues of the entire world.

What an insightful comment -- thank you! It's a blues song, but not a cover or an homage (as most blues songs are today). Charley Paton or Son House would have loved Sign O' the Times -- it's just good, creative, innovative blues songwriting.

I have to admit that Suzanne Rogers explaining how he recorded his vocals on a very basic track and then the guitar to answer and emphasize, made me realize how much this is truly a blues song. The chords in this song, though stretched out, should give that away, obviously. The use of synts and samplers, and overall wild arrangements (in other songs) may obscured it perhaps. But I get that this blues approach is very much how he approached music, not just in this song. Thank you for pointing that out😊

I think it's mixed. The events he alludes to in the song do make it feel dated, i.e. rocket ships exploding and people dying of aids and needles, etc. Yet the underlying tone of concern for the those troubled times is quite relevant today since we are experiencing our own collective existential angst. In that way, it's relatable....

He has been there, done that. You either listened to what he had to say through his music decades ago, or you ignored it. Either way, the song remains the same, as does our current sign of the times. @@suzeesix 💋🍒💋I think he means a standard video with a storyline. Also Prince didn’t want to make a video for this song, it was the record label that put that together. Videos back then were used for advertising, so they felt the song needed to have one...it didn’t.🍒💋🍒

@@purpleflowers699 Music videos are still used for advertising. The whole point is having something to watch when the music is being played on TV. No TV station wants to broadcast an empty screen. I remember thinking the video was revolutionary as it featured animated computer graphics which I had never seen in a music video before.

Michael Jackson danced like nobody could dance, but the truly great pop musician of the 1980s and 90s, no doubt, was Prince. I believe the future will bring a lot more weight to his work, and, as new tracks are unveiled, as no doubt many will be unveiled, his fame will grow, and grow. I don't throw this word around much at all, but he was by all means a genius.

I was just a baby when this came out, but when I finally came around to it, I was all in. 1987 is my favorite year for '80s music through and through. _Sign o' the Times_ is indeed my favorite Prince LP(s), period. Imagine what this project(s) could've been like if the label would've let him work his magic. I had so many questions about his music that nobody asked about. What was _Crystal Ball_ really supposed to be?

I was a little kid in the 80's and honestly I had no idea I was being blessed by all these genius artists. For me it was just Tuesday. It was normal! It's only now looking back and comparing with today that I truly realize just how lucky I was to grow up in that era. I wish I could go back and this time appreciate their unmatched talent.

I'm going to speak in spanish El no habla de música.
