How "prebunking" misinformation works

Sander van der Linden of Cambridge University's Social Decision-Making Lab showed Lesley Stahl videos and video games that teach people how to identify common manipulation tactics and prevent themselves from getting duped.
"60 Minutes" is the most successful television broadcast in history. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 and is still a hit, over 50 seasons later, regularly making Nielsen's Top 10.

The whole point of disinformation and misinformation is to create confusion and apathy so we end up bacing our decisions on emotional bias and prejudice rather than facts/reality - a standard right wing F.U.D. tactic. e.g. the abomination that is Trump/Kelly-Ann Conway/Alternative facts/Fake news. Yes. "Prebunking" is thought control, menticide, brainwashing, etc. It's totalitarian. In an enlightened society, you don't need "prebunking." You have an educated populace that can tell if a story sounds fishy or not, you investigate it, etc. These people are trying to 'hack' enlightenment. There's no way to do that. There's no shortcut to learning. Unfortunately, the only way is the traditional method, which is basically a lot of reading, from which you learn critical thinking. That's what the States stood for, more or less, until recently, as opposed to the ideology-based societies like the Soviet Union, or fascist states, or theocracies like postrevolutionary Iran. The giveaway is when the journalist says, with alarm, that the "misinformation" forced the readers to "question" the efficacy of the virus. That's exactly what critical thinking _is_ -- you question authority. It doesn't mean you destroy authority, or become nihilistic, or whatever she seems to fear. Incidentally, his analogy to vaccines is _exactly_ wrong. Vaccination is not prebunking. A vaccine does not "refute" the virus in advance, no more than an educated mind reflexively denies an idea. Rather the vaccine _contains_ the harmful substance (or a simulacrum of it); you put this _inside_ your body, so that your immune system, in a controlled setting (like that of education), learns how to resist it. A thinking person can consider an idea and reject it. Indeed (as you know, as anybody who's benefited from the incredible Russian intellectual tradition knows, the tradition that gave us Tolstoy, Pushkin, Nabokov, Dosteovsky, Stravinsky, Tarkovsky, arguably Alexander Grothendieck :) ) this is the _only_ way thought is possible and it's the only way to a free and flourishing society. Given the importance and the difficulty of enlightenment, it's easy to see why the notion of some kind of a magical shortcut to knowledge is so appealing to us. In the creation myth of Islam / Christianity / Judaism, the very first human beings are tempted by the devil to eat the "fruit of knowledge," but when they do so, they're cast out of paradise, and must deal with the unions. (sarcasm) The first woman on earth in Greek mythology was given a present by the gods, a magic box that contained all the knowledge of the world, but when she opens it, demons are released. My first day at conservatory my professor stood up in front of the classroom and said -- how I wish I could just wire my brain up to you guys and transfer all the music I've ever heard into your brains! I realize Elon Musk is developing neurolink, but again, there's a difference between a _tool_ and what you do with that tool (build a flourishing society). The Greeks called the tool "tech" and reason "logos" which is where we get those words.

I think basically people have just gotten really lazy and think that everything, knowledge included, is on some kind of delivery system. That's why the only valid political questions have to do with "access." The guy in the video is wrong -- his analogy is upside-down, I commented on that, as well as how "prebunking" is bogus and I guess they deleted my comment, how depressing

🙄 If we could only do something about the endless superfluous rebranding of recycled academic jargon, such as "psychological inoculation" and "prebunking". 🌌 Neutrality was an option in the space war between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic. However, unless you buy into the whole Gray Jedi mumbojumbo, 🙅 middling neutral equilibrium is not an option between the Dark Side of the Force and the Light Side of the Force, so there is NO false dichotomy at work when Anakin correctly asserts that you are either with him on the Dark Side of the Force or you are not with him (and thus are against him as an enemy) on the Light Side of the Force. By the way, that Jedi Code was absolutely filled with rules, tenets, beliefs, and precepts (i.e. "Do or do not. There is no try"). Even high-minded notions of compromise and moderation were unquestionably held as truisms, indistinct from "absolutes" in practice.

And although, it is a button down oxford shirt in style, with that print it wouldn't usually be call that a dress shirt, especially without a tie, but ok. Most would call that a pullover sweatshirt, but it's more of a dressed down sweater with a dressed down oxford shirt. So yeah, a pullover sweater over an oxford with an undershirt, again, it too has been around for a long time, too.

The stories of athletes collapsing on the playing field are popping up every week, for those paying attention. All of them with heart issues. I've had a cousin die very young recently from heart failure and his widow blames the vax. Also a 37 year old BIL very healthy suddenly has an aortic aneurism and was very lucky to survive after ER surgery. Our government has all but admitted that Covid came from a lab, but you notice nobody is doing anything about it. The cognitive dissonance over the virus and the vax has made me very wary. The entire government, media, and medical community have failed us and in many cases deliberately lied to us.

And the greatest loss that a person loses in this life is that he lives while he does not know God who created him, knowing the Messenger of Muhammad, the last of the messengers, and the Islamic religion, the last of the heavenly religions. The great intelligence, before you believe in something or not, is to read it, study it, and understand it well, and then you have the choice to believe in it or not. I advise you on this now before you do not have time to do that.
