How Paulo Freire Made Marxism Stupid

The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Episode 94
Paulo Freire is a Brazilian Marxist who is responsible for "Marxifying" education (newdiscourses.com/2022/05/pau..., thereby ruining it. In effect, what he did was created a Marxist Theory of being educated (newdiscourses.com/2022/05/pau..., and what this did, in turn, was create a Marxist Theory of knowledge and knowing. Who gets to be considered a knower? On what grounds? To whose benefit? Who decides? All of these questions are to be answered on (Critical) Marxist grounds. One result of this transition, in addition to his approach to education (newdiscourses.com/2022/08/pau..., is that he opened the door to a true Marxism of stupidity. You see, as a result of Freire's arguments, "excluded knowledges" have to be included, which includes the stupid. Speaking of how anti-intellectual and stupid this allowed Marxism to be, it allows for any idiot with a "Critical" disposition to create a Marxist Theory of anything by asking and answering the sorts of questions listed above about the knowledge base of anything they want. Thus, we end up with Marxist analyses of every academic subject, every facet of society, every hobby, every everything, in an interminable cascade of irritating stupidity we refer to as "being Woke." In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay explains the phenomenon through a number of examples that make it absolutely clear how cheap and stupid "Marxist" analysis has become as a result of going "Woke."

    I'd like to share a story about this. In 2005 when I was 14, my friend and I won the school science fair. The winners from each school were then invited to the University of Cape Town for the regional finals. There were categories, we were in the IT category. The first funny thing was that I don't think any of the projects in our category science, but rather engineering. We had built a water-cooled computer with our hypotheses being something like "Computers will one day have to be water cooled" haha. Our teacher tried very hard to explain that we needed to follow a scientific process. Hypothesis, testing, conclusion. But it seems like this is just what happens when "engineers" try to do "science". Anyway, we knew our project made no sense in the context of science but we were happy to be there. I remember the judge suggesting to me that multiple processors is the more likely future solution. He was basically right. There was a boy in our category (who for some reason didn't have a partner like everyone else), who had built an entire school administration system in ruby. At the time I had no idea what ruby even was, although I went on to be a professional programmer. The winner of our category was however a pair of girls who had made a trivial and underwhelming two paged website stating a few common phrases in an indigenous language. Of course this had nothing to do with science either. I was shocked that they guy with the school administration system didn't win. As I remember, it contained advanced features such as creating timetables! The boy was most likely a genius. I could not understand the judges' decision and it made me incredibly suspicious of the University of Cape Town. Little did I know, this was but the tip of the iceberg :(

    Apparently someone beat them to the punch on "Gardening"...I heard this story on a tape we watched in my HS gov't class: Older woman was recounting the time in her youth when she was an activist in the Cultural Revolution. Her mother walked outside and noticed her daughter was digging up the flowers in the flower bed. When she asked "Why are you digging up the flowers?!", the daughter responded "These are IMPERIALIST flowers!" In retrospect, she couldn't believe how far down the rabbit hole she had gone. Anything and everything is subject to this way of thinking.

    What really sucks is that they sometimes take actual critiques of current systems and trends and take them over. Like for example, librarians (as you mentioned). You don't NEED and SHOULDN'T NEED a Masters degree to be a librarian, but that's the standard requirement now. The Education System as a whole has an issue with elitism and corporate pandering to the point where it's impractical and yes, it does unecessarily gatekeep certain fields. You can't get that job because you need a diploma, Bachelor's, Masters, PhD or certificate in a specific field, even though you don't ACTUALLY need one, the higher ups are just trying to elevate themselves because they got that degree and they don't want to feel like they wasted their time and energy. Plus, their company has a partnership with the local university. Critiquing all that never actually happens though because the Marxists like to spin their lies into it by including the stuff about "systemic oppression" and "they're not actual experts," etc. And in the fields they've pretty much taken over, they're just creating a self-perpetuating ~psuedo-anti-elitist~ system where they gatekeep people and then claim to want to fight the gatekeeping. Kinda like what every corporation in the WEF is trying to do with "stakeholder capitalism" 🤦😂

  • @tashmoobabe8704

    @tashmoobabe8704

    Yep. You nailed it. It's a dialectic: create a corrupt and conformist system of everything, then encourage everyone to notice how corrupt and conformist it is, while replacing it with something truly corrupt and conformist. And absurd. . . . I mean, it isn't like "rigor" actually built us a medical system that gives a shit about people. We need alternatives.

    This is brilliant. I recalled how easy it was to fall into this pattern of high-minded activism back in the '90s, when my younger self was frolicking in the intellectual amusement park of New York City. Nothing was bigger than our sense of self-importance. We were changing things! Truthfully, we never changed anything, just delivered the power to a new bunch of thought leaders. The only thing that kept it from succeeding, as far as taking over my very soul, was the assholedom of those pushing it. In their role as the new "self-appointed gatekeepers" of what is progressive and righteous and cool, any kind of cruelty or corruption was justified by progressive values. . . . What could possibly go wrong? 2020, for one. The World Economic Forum, for another. Killing people on ventilators because it fits a lifestyle choice of never questioning anything labeled "liberal." . . . What's missing is the "critical" awareness of fiat money systems as the ultimate oppression of everybody. It's all a distraction from the realization that we are all slaves. . . . I read Pedagogy of the Oppressed many years ago and was dazzled by Paulo Freire's grasp of how we think we're "helping the poor" but in reality are indoctrinating them back into the hierarchy. And then the whole thing came to a screeching halt when he cited Castro and Mao. How's that going for everybody? Are you ready for the next phase of communism? Once upon a time, I was. I got reeducated, and fast.

Unfortunately, I believe that Brazil reached the point of no return: the conservative reaction we saw in the last 6 years came too late, the institutions are too far gone to be saved. It saddens me to say the country will probably become next Latin America failed state: it will be too hindered by bureaucracy and an aging demographic for it to pull itself out of poverty. To what degree it will fail I don’t know. Will it be a hellscape like Venezuela or it will be permanently stagnant?

    After listening to this, I have an intense desire to do a full length doctoral dissertation on the meaning of a series of Team Fortress 2 machinima, specifically Soldier's Dispenser Quest by the KZreadr, Raxxo. Of course, as someone already intimately familiar with said animation genre, I can already tell you now that the MO of Raxxo and his animating peers is to come up with new creative forms of *abject nonsense* for their own amusement. Barring an interview/questions of authorial intent from Raxxo himself, every interpretation I make would be a complete ass-pull. And that would only be compounded further were I to to include that series' final installment, The Soldier's Dispenser Collab, hosted by Raxxo and contributed to by over a hundred animators, each injecting their own flavor of madness into an already incomprehensible (by design) narrative. I suspect that even if I were to avoid woke talking points, I could actually earn a doctorate "interpreting" such manic cinematic chaos for shits and giggles. God save academia.

    Interesting. I first learned of Freire about a month ago when we read his "'Banking' Concept of Education" in class. My main takeaways were the critical thinking and dialogue so I thought it was a valuable piece at least in the context of that class (oppression and liberation ofc were the other big issues.) The class was writing and we were to talk about the issues in the texts in classes and in forums (in addition to essays). I wouldn't have thought to connect to these concepts, then again I only read one Freire text. How can we build room for critique that is beneficial to society and/or our personal lives? I can see how a critique about corn bread for example doesn't serve either purpose and likely is just going to cause hard feelings around the food.

    @@joedarrow5422 what would you like to be clarified about? The owner of this channel believes in Brazilian fake news that began to be disseminated when Paulo Freire was secretary of education for the workers' party. Paulo Freire was not a Marxist, the oppressed-oppressor relationship has nothing to do with social classes, but with the formation of conscience in the understanding of reality. Oppressed-oppressor arises from the Hegelian dialectic. It is an epistemology that seeks to understand the subject-object relationship in the subject's understanding of the object. It is an analysis of aprioristic relations and, unlike Marxism, Paulo Freire has non-materialist understandings, that is, idealists, based on a geist that understands "becoming human", based on the recognition that subjects make in understanding the object. To think that Paulo Freire is a Marxist is extremely superficial.
