Probably we would have continued to speculate, T-Mac style of what if the Lakers can build sth competent around him. But alas, Kobe would have probably dipped in UFA anyway, since he is dealing with such incompetency, so expect a big name team with half-competent players to contend for Kobe.

@@joshuachang5210 The gamescore of Gasol and Kobe for the 2010 finals were almost the same 18.7 to 18.6 slight edge to Kobe. Gamescore is basically like PER but for small sample sizes -- it doesn't adjust for league average so it's a good comparison only for those in those games. here is a quick recap of those stats: Kobe: 28.6pts 8.0reb 3.9ast 2.1st 0.7blk 3.8 turnover 52.8% ts 108 ORtg 99DRtg Gasol: 18.6pts 11.6reb 3.7ast 0.7stl 2.6blk 1.8 turnover 55.6%ts 122 ORtg 101 DRtg The series went 7 games and Lakers won game 6 & 7. so looking at game 7: Kobe 23pts 15reb 2 ast 1stl 0blk 4 turnover 37.6%ts 0 +/- 0.3 BPM Gasol: 19pts 18reb 4ast 0stl 2blk 1 turnover 43.7%ts +7 +/- 10.4 BPM And game 6: Kobe 26pts 11reb 3 ast 4stl 0blk 2 turnover 58.9%ts +15 +/- 13.8 BPM Gasol: 17pts 13reb 9ast 1stl 3blk 2 turnover 51.1%ts +20 +/- 13.5 BPM It was close. Statistically, I would give it to Gasol. But the case for Kobe is that he was also the captain and the focus of attention. But certainly Gasol had a better argument for the Finals MVP than Iguodala had over Curry.

I am so glad they retired Pau’s number 16 jersey in the staple center. He really deserved it. Honestly, that Lakers team is my favorite team in NBA history. No they did not 3P like the early 2000s Lakers but it was so much fun watching Kobe and Pau lead the team to two championships. As far as Kobe’s legacy, I still think he goes down as a great player in history, but it would just be a story of a huge “what if “ . I think the story would’ve been if they could’ve gotten a team around Kobe then yes he could’ve won a championship or two but it just never happened. LeBron James was in the same situation the first time he was in Cleveland. Cleveland felt like he was enough but no top 10 player wins championships without at least one other great player on the team. I mean with out Pau coming to the Lakers in 2008 no they don’t win those two other championships, even Kobe Bryant has said that. And without Kobe being a five time champion and the Lakers having that run in the late 2000s that they did, I don’t know if that team is as appealing to LeBron James and maybe she never joined the team so we wouldn’t get the championship we got during Covid either. I always thought Pau was underappreciated. As a Laker fan I remember I was actually laid off from my job that summer so the next day as a happy Lakers fan after they beat the Celtics in 2010 I watched ESPN because I wanted to hear people talk about the Lakers. I kid you not if you add up the total amount of time that they discussed the Lakers winning the championship on ESPN the next day it probably would amount to about 30 minutes, instead all everyone wanted to talk about was where LeBron James was going. And the following season he goes to the Miami Heat, and I just always felt that Kobe and Pau never really got the props. They deserved back then. Today, everyone looks back on that era of the Lakers, and talks about how great it was but at the time it felt like sports media was trying to hide how great they were.

Petition to have Jonny make a video how Pau came into the league as a 7ft SF and how he would be the GOAT for this era. He'd be in between Sabo and 🃏 but a better shot blocker. ON TOP of all that!!! If he never played with Kobe and Lakers he wouldn't have bulked up and would've led to him being EVEN MORE finesse than he was as a big. Sadly I believe if this happened he would be appreciated more with modern fans that don't know. Pau aged like fine wine better than anyone else. Physically too _😏_ He was a skilled SF essentially then became more PF, in La he became more traditional big but towards the end of his run he showed flashes of greater ball handling and shooting for us, in CHI he then became a floor spacer and closed a game on a driving LeBron by blocking him(eat your fgn ❤️ out B LO, Pau the first stretch 5 shot blocker!!! Made that graceful transition 1st!!), further improved his shooting in SA and the spurs were still competent against GS despite an old Pau not being a good matchup for them!! Zaza remember! Obviously mainly bc Kawhi and Green but yeah he wasn't completely played off floor like older DUNCAN was and retired early bc he was able to become that valuable as a stretch 5 in the modern era Pau today would be awesome bc he can be the bigger LA version or the more finesse rookie version. The og KD or Joker. Lmao such a struggle right. Pau today minimum would be 25.2, 13.8, 7.8, 2.4 with a lower usage rate much like 🃏. One of the most valuable players all time that sadly played in the wrong era. Probs the best Euro talent ever bc of that. Even moreso than Dirk bc Pau showed more potential. Obviously Luka is Luka and big Sabo is the correct answer but Luka had accomplishments so he wins. Still I believe as a pure talent Pau should def be in that Convo Nobody was a more perfect fit for this era than Pau and I'll fight anyone on that!! He would be the GOAT of this era fighting 🃏

I luv Pau as much as the next person and think he is underrated, but saying he “saved” the Lakers is a stretch imo. Ofc the Lakers don’t win those chips without Pau but again I wouldn’t go as far to say he “saved”…. All Kobe needed was a slither of help (which he didn’t have the previous 3 years) and as soon as he got it he led the Lakers to 3 straight chips to the Finals in the tuff West winning b-2-b chips

I disagree. I still remember this trade and felt how devastating it was for other teams chances to win a championship. Pau during this time was a superstar/franchise player for the Grizzlies, so it made sense why the Lakers went from a playoff contender to a championship contender. This trade made Kobe stay with LA, and winning b2b championships proved that it was the right decision for him. Without Pau, Kobe ultimately would've left and there would be no b2b championship after Shaq.

Saved might be strong since they really needed each other, but it has more to do with the intangibles when it comes to Pau Gasol and the Lakers. It's been lost to history that Kobe's reputation in the mid 2000s was basically the same as Trae Young's today. A ball hog who puts up numbers but will kill any chance your team has of winning. They really needed a star player that could both take some of the pressure off him, be ok with being a 2nd option, and essentially be the "good cop" on the team. While Shaq is obviously the best co-star Kobe ever had, I think Pau is the only one that could have made those Lakers teams as cohesive as they were.

Kobe killed that narrative when he refused to shoot and showed what he truly had around him a bunch of fakers, that's why he threatened to leave. Quickest impact I've ever seen in a trade !! The Lakers were a decent playoff team at best in January 08 and the second Pau put on a Laker uniform that night in New Jersey they immediately became the best team in the Western Conference and cruised to the #1 seed , same story in the Playoffs they only lost 3 games on their way to the Finals , they ran into a buzz saw in the big 3 Celtics and they really missed Bynum that series , but next season they get him back and stay healthy through the playoffs and got a ring !

I'm not sure what Kobe's legacy would be, but it would probably be partly as a Chicago Bull. I've been a Laker fan my whole life, and I never really understood Kobe until after he retired. The media always pushed the narrative that he was a selfish prima donna with amazing talent, but that was about it. I never knew how dedicated to winning he was or about his insane work ethic or that he was incredibly smart and insightful. The media narrative was always about his athleticism, how many shots he took, how he never passed, how he "whined" about the organization, and especially _especially_ that he was an arrogant jerk. And he was - Kobe was absolutely an arrogant jerk to his teammates, because he didn't respect their work ethics _(at least that's what he said in some post-retirement quotes)._ He didn't respect them as teammates or professionals and he was a total asshole about it. It's probably why he loved Pau so much - Pau was an excellent player who worked his ass off. Kobe said he retired from the game with 4 real friends: Derek Fisher, Rony Turiaf(!), Caron Butler, and Pau. Looking back on that era I honestly don't remember what I thought of Kobe, but the Lakers were bad. Smush Parker, Chris Mihm, et al, weren't _terrible_ players, but they weren't NBA starter quality, and that was the whole team - Kobe Bryant, a hurt Lamar Odom, and 13 bench guys. Then they got Pau Gasol and won 2 titles, so yeah, Pau was pretty good.

Pau was often criticized as being soft and passive. Nothing could be further from the truth. He is what i would call a finesse player with a high basketball IQ. He might not be able to bully or grind you down inside, but he still quietly dominates in many ways that dont show up on stat sheets (think Tim Duncan). No flashy moves but fundamentally sound. Kobe and Pau connected on another level not seen before. Kobe finally found someone to match his drive and intensity and earned his respect. Proof? The Mamba made him a godfather to his beloved daughter.

As a younger Laker fan at the time Pau was one of my favorite players in Hs and taught me most of what I know about off ball play. It’s a lost art in todays game but what Pau did for Bynum and for Kobe was amazing. Pau could Run the PnR with Bynum as the roll man free throw line in and even kick out to shooters and cutters. Then with Kobe he was perfect in screen actions. Pau had a great mid range jumper and could roll. If the defense rotated he could throw lobs over the top to Bynum in the short roll action almost Draymond like except more stiff and stationary. He had a nice floater if you tried to play in between. Literally besides the “Kobe and Pau” duo they were coined “The Twin Towers”. He got chewed out sometimes for now playing through physical contact but he tightened up and got sum Sauce after awhile.

the big question with Pau is what if he hadn't been unselfish. Never one of those beasts who try climb on personal records, thou he could've played that role, as he used to with the spanish team. So he was 2 players: a total leader, and a 2nd sword for an alpha like Kobe. Maybe a better player would've never make it so well with Kobe due to that precisely. He knew how to be the 2nd one. It's like when in soccer, a creative player like Griezmann accepts the responsabiliy of defending while he could be scoring or shining. At this point we get more confused if comparing his stats as a leader in Memphis and as a 2nd sword in L.A. Hardly you may have seen somebody more regular or consistant. It's the enigma of my favourite player ever, for whoms performances i've kept awaken in the spanish late night during more than a decade.

Hard to say. The Lakers were playing better before Pau came than they did the previous three seasons. Maybe they would have traded for other players or signed free agents to help them win titles. I'm positive Kobe would have won titles with someone else if not Pau.

I do think Kobe would still be viewed as the 2nd best shooting guard of all-time even if the Gasol trade never happened but he would be further out of any top 5 player of all-time discussions and I think more people might even leave him out of their top 10.

This guy was just as important as pippen was too Jordan but Lakers fans dont nearly talk enough about him or give him that much respect. I always about Kobe winning those 2 rings. Pau never get memtioned which is so wrong. With Pau Kobe would only be a top 20-25 player but because of Pau he is a top 5-10 player in most eyes
