Intro:
Image can be reflected in our demeanour, our actions, our comments, and equally, it will be defined by how people interpret that behaviour. When we encounter people, and other alike entities, we spend a lot of time attempting to paint a mental picture in our head for how we envision them. Now, we cannot look into their minds and read their every intention, but some judgement is always necessary, because when we have to make a decision which may involve bestowing responsibility or trust in certain people, then that mental picture has to be factored in.
However, this is typically reserved for personal relationships, and although we may hold greater opinions about certain issues, we won’t typically assign a face to it. This is particularly the case with corporations. Now, it’s completely valid to have distaste for companies and their conduct, but it’s also reasonable to accept that most companies are made up of a lot of interacting tiers, and this can lead to them pretty much being separated from the idea of consciousness altogether. Although I wouldn’t actually agree with that, and urge others to keep in mind that a decision will typically have a person behind it, it is often hard to conceptually feel any emotional connection to what a company may do, hell, if we did we’d probably never stop being upset, and we need to look out for our mental well being too you know.
KZread occupies a weird medium between the world of intimacy and distance, because although we may not feel a connection to a lot of creators on a personal level, their success partly relies on the direct support that we pledge towards them. A lot of celebrities feel a bit beyond our world, and KZread creates communities that people can be involved in, however, because of that, there is a bit more direct accountability, and a judgement that does feel a little more personal. Therefore, we tend to apply certain standards for creators that we may not give to large multinational corporations, partly because of that connection, and partly because we actually have the power to hold them accountable.
Over the last few years, we’ve witnessed companies attempt to be quote “woke”, and relate to the human condition, yet it never feels particularly real because, although amusing, you receive the impression it’s just another campaign focused towards the demographic of depressed teenagers who occupy the Twitter hellscape. On top of this, the Tweets are never really channeled through the mind of an individual, and therefore we never put a face to the company or develop a personal connection.
However, in 2015, a business managed to infiltrate a budding KZread community, through a character who would become almost synonymous with the product that he was offering. Yes, long before BetterHelp would cause many creators to reevaluate how they keep an eye on the sponsors they collaborate with, there was an even more bewildering controversy, surrounding one of the most iconic KZread sponsors: Samurai Buyer.

Samurai Buyer officially shuts down on Dec.31. It’ll be in a way, an end of this saga, it’s an interesting lesson for companies about the power of social media. A nobody middle man shipping company got big because of large content creators, but certain individuals got a big head and thought they could do whatever they wanted and the repercussions of that decision affected them to the end. Even if Merry’s troubles didn’t end the company immediately… since due to the nature of companies they can stay active even if they are losing money for a certain period of time. It would seem this drama and the lack of professionalism of Misaki among other things started this slow collapse. In the age of social media; companies should try to avoid fucking people over for a small gain.

Its not just that. The fact that the company continued to employ Misaki after shit went down instead of realizing their mistake and bandaging the wound while its still fresh, they allowed it to fester until nobody could trust their representative anymore. If they had fired Misaki from the first instance and claimed ignorance over his treatment of Merry, they could still save face(or replace it) but by letting things get out of hand, they earned their dismissal from the community.

It requires real deal to wrap your mind around this. You've heard this quote plenty of times "Don't judge a book by its cover". Tip for all you travelers, specially streamers out there, it's best to learn the country's swear words or dangerous words first. Imagine some Japanese dude went to the US saying "gang sht" "Im Blood" "n-word" that his foreign "friend" told him to say as a formal greeting in a ghetto part of town.

I feel like this is something that needs to be made more clear about being a foreigner in Japan in general. I lived there for five years, and what I observed is that this sort of behavior by organizations and individuals in positions of power is unfortunately widespread. Managers and companies regularly expect work hours beyond the legally allowed shift limits from their employees, and extra duties their workers were never hired for and will not be paid for. Do not expect pay for overtime in Japan, unless you're a CEO writing his own paycheck. For a native Japanese citizen, being taken advantage of in this manner is just accepted as part of living in their "unique" and "special" country. Trying to use actual recorded Japanese law to fight such exploitation by employers is pretty much pointless, as it's widely understood that a company will just fire you for made up and unspecific reasons (much like what you saw with Merryweather) and most government agencies who are ostensibly there to enforce the law will just accept their undefined reasons for termination. And that will often lead to this particularly Faustian rationale: since you were fired, you must have been a bad employee, so there is no longer a reason to continue an investigation about your mistreatment as one, and your case is summarily closed This sort of bureaucratic betrayal by an agency that's supposed to protect you is usually followed by your name and picture (btw, all job applications in Japan require a photo of your face... for all of the wrong reasons you can imagine) being put on an entirely illegal but never criminally investigated black list for all the local employers who all embrace the same abusive work practices. Chances are, you will end up jobless and un-hireable, and you will either have to move to another place entirely or take the risk of looking for opportunity in the underworld. To the average good-hearted and pacifistic Japanese citizen, this is a terrifying prospect, and they will usually accept most demands made by their employers just to avoid this situation. This is exactly why Misaki acted the way he did after being exposed, because in Japan, vague threats like that actually work, and most Japanese without the money or power to fight back will just cave to these threats immediately. His mistake is a common one, he tried to use Japanese style intimidation on Westerners, which pretty much always falls flat if they're not in Japan and vulnerable to Japanese authorities. In this case, he got rightfully punked by the KZreadrs involved, but always remember, folks like him in Japan generally are the "winners" in life. For every public shaming he's received online in our virtual world, he's probably fully taken advantage of and/or crushed an unfortunate Japanese citizen who happens to be lower than him on the totem pole with implied threats and requests that are presented as formal letters or official documents provided by cooperative local officials. Japanese bullies are paper tigers, but unfortunately in Japan, papers are very real weapons. Now imagine being a foreigner with even less legal knowledge of Japan, it's an even more sketchy experience. Some companies will actually coddle their foreign employees for PR reasons, as they see their foreigner as more of a living mascot, and thus get much better treatment than native Japanese employees. But some also fully abuse the fear and confusion of their foreign employees to maximize every little profit or work they can get out of their essentially helpless laborer. If you look around, you will find horror stories of foreigners having their passports taken by their new employers for “registration purposes” but then never get them back, realizing that the company is holding it hostage for their compliance. So if you want to rock the boat, they just report you for being an undocumented foreigner and the Japanese government deports you and bans you from the country without caring you actually have a visa since you can’t produce it. And if you try to fight it and rightfully accuse the company of taking your documentation, good luck, because generally the Japanese do not care about the law when it comes to foreigners, unless it will get them in actual trouble with a major power’s government. For proof of this attitude, look up the fact that “Japanese Only” establishments still exist in Japan, despite the country’s own constitution declaring that kind of discrimination illegal. By Japan’s own core legal document, no business can be allowed to deny services purely on a racial or ethnic basis, yet they do it rampantly throughout the country. Reporting it does nothing, as the government body tasked with “enforcing” that law is the Jinken Yougobu, or Bureau of Human Rights, and they literally have no power to enforce anything. They can’t force discriminators to desist or even send police, just send a strongly-worded (which in Japan basically constitutes not using the words “please” and “if you would be so kind” every other sentence) letter that will be ignored. Importantly, if you ever decide to move there as a foreigner, always remember that there is no Writ of Habeus Corpus in Japan. This means Japanese police can arrest and hold you without warrant or charge for up to 23 days with no phone call and commonly no lawyer to get a confession out of you, any confession they want. You want to maintain you have a legal visa to be in this country and that it’s being held by your employer against you will? The police will just keep you in interrogation for 3 days straight until you break and admit that you made up the entire foul accusation to sully the unimpeachable honor of your Japanese employer just to get out of the interrogation. This brings us to the Japanese legal system. The Japanese justice system only brings guaranteed convictions to trial because they believe acquittals in court de-legitimizes their legal system and makes Japan look imperfect or weak. Thus, Japan’s low crime rate is not indicative of lack of criminality there, but the fact that many crimes are actively swept under the rug when it involves only Japanese nationals. This is done through the tradition of jidan, a type of apology that takes the form of monetary compensation. The aggrieved party agrees to not file charges or withdraw them by accepting financial compensation from the guilty party. This type of resolution is actively encouraged and sometimes facilitated by Japanese police to simplify their own workloads, as a jidan means they don't have to actually finish the investigation and write any more reports. This is used for crimes as minor as theft to as egregious as rape. Keep in mind, rape as a crime in Japan is only vigorously pursued when the assailant is foreign. By Japan’s own law, rape only occurs if the victim can prove they actively fought back, by having evidence of violence like bruises or cuts on herself and the attacker. If you’re drugged and raped in Japan by a Japanese man, congratulations, you just had consensual sex, and now you’re just a dishonest woman trying to ruin the life of a good decent Rufie-carrying family man. But you just have to suggest a foreigner may have raped you to send the Japanese police smashing through said foreigner’s front door in the middle of the night to arrest them and hold them for 23 days without a call or lawyer until they confess to it. This is not in anyway stating that the publicly well-known and tried cases of rapes by foreigners like US servicemen are all false accusations, but just pointing out that justice in Japan is severely unjust. Now imagine that entire legal paradigm applied to a foreigner of little power or influence, and they’re accusing a Japanese person or entity of wrong-doing. To bring it to trial is a stain on their nation’s honor by allowing a foreigner to publicly expose Japanese misbehavior, and even if they acquit the Japanese employer, it’s an unforgiveable disruption to their near 100% conviction rate while also giving the public a whisper of a suspicion that discrimination or corruption may have affected the outcome. All outcomes cannot be countenanced there. As far as the Japanese legal system is concerned, you’re just another foreign troublemaker trying to pollute the “purity” and reputation of Japan. All of this can happen to any visitor to the country that happens to upset the wrong Japanese national, but especially those who are seeking work or a new life there. Serious cases of coercion and entrapment have happened to people ranging from unfortunate prospective English teachers who got involved with unscrupulous English schools to young Filipina or Southeast Asian women who were lured to Japan on promises of maid work or other domestic jobs, but find themselves suddenly deprived of their documentation and forced into the red light district business like hostess clubs and brothels like soaplands. Japan seems to get a pass from Western countries due to their image of being obsequious and cooperative to Western governments when it comes to international politics, but they have serious internal issues with basic human rights that are swept under the rug of the Japanese concept of "Yamato Damashii," or the "Japanese Spirit" or what I would call "the greater good of the Japanese people." It's this sort of warped manipulation of the 18th century samurai myth of selfless sacrifice that is used to exploit their own citizens alongside hapless foreigners. Japan can be an enchanting country with its preserved natural beauty and near-pristine maintenance of its historic sites and culture, but there is a definitely draconian and calcified skeleton inside that pretty closet.

To add on, Japan in notorious for labelling any crime that resulted in death as "suicide" or a health complication (ie. heart disease, even if patient history says they had no heart conditions presented before). This is in order to keep giving the image of how the police look to people, and showing that their (investigative/detective) capabilities are high. Unfortunately, the motive is the fact that this is the only way for them to keep their position as officers, and they will play dirty just to keep it that way. "Without autopsies they can keep their percentage [of solved cases] high. It's all about numbers." In terms of unnatural death, Japan autopsies only a mere 11% of the cases nationwide (whereas natural death autopsy is practically zero, which can avoid investigations for medical malpractice). They do not want to investigate due to a number of reasons: the family does not want to (cultural idea of "leave the dead alone" (while ironically falsely labelling the dead) in conjunction with social stigma aka "The nail that sticks out shall be hammered down" ), it is expensive for the insurance companies to compensate if the death is unnatural, giving proper punishment if it is someone who may be in power is impossible, and police want to keep those numbers of solved cases high. The disturbing fact is that unless the killer is obvious, they will not request autopsies, and one can easily get away with murder if they need to. Here's a Case of Takashi Saito, a 17-year old who's severe head injuries, chest injuries and "battered" looking body was announced by the police as a heart disease-related death. The police initially refused the family to see the body until pressure caved them in and the family saw the horrid state of their son. It wasn't until a month later that they decided to investigate, which was after the case had gone viral. (links also provide quotes and stats that I used for this comment) web.archive.org/web/20190401043622/www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2007-nov-09-fg-autopsy9-story.html (non-archive version still available, but it forces you to subscribe to the newsletter) www.japantimes.co.jp/opinion/2016/02/27/editorials/troubling-low-autopsy-rate/ now you know another reason why Japan has a high suicide rate while having a low homicide rate

This may be a little bit of a difficulty to believe, but I was mutuals with the Samurai Buyer account on Twitter back a few years ago. And it wasn't even business relations, that account was added to a group chat that I was apart of (and still am in) some years back and would talk with the rest of the people in the group about various things. Something that's really irking me after the things you described here, is that whoever was operating the account could speak perfectly well English, or at least hadn't fully utilized the "broken" English that Misaki(?) would do elsewhere. They were generally empathetic and easy going. We would generally converse about our daily lives and struggles with depression and the like. I may have been interacting with a totally different employee. Like I said, you guys might have a but of difficulty in believing me, but I'm just gonna sit here and try to rack my brains on any memories, and if I have anything off an old account what our conversations were like, I'll absolutely add more to this. Seeing the account in screenshots also doubled my confirmation to myself it's the same account I interacted with. (Update): The person I befriended in the end was not Misaki after all, it was a different employee that they passed the account to for a while. From what he described he dipped FAST when he started realizing what he was getting himself into. Ironically you helped me remember him and now I have met up with an old friend again, thank you very much for that.
