How Often Do You Really Need to Shower?

Do you really need a daily shower to stay clean, or is it doing more harm than good? Some scientists have recommendations based on what we know about our skin - and what might be living on top of it.

Like with most all health tips: Shower when you're dirty Eat when you're hungry Drink when you're thirsty Sleep when you're tired Use the bathroom when you need to I honestly don't know why people have so much trouble with some of this. Your body is literally built to tell you what it needs you to do.

fassjfsajgjopsag Wrong. So a person that takes a sip of water because they feel thirsty is dehydrated? No. Being dehydrated is a very bad thing and it’s when your body has very little water, which would only happen under extreme circumstances. So every time someone says they are thirsty doesn’t mean they are dehydrated.

I used to get eczema and other skin rashes a lot when I showered & scrubbed everywhere everyday. its how my dad taught me though and he'd get mad if I skipped a day without showering, saying it's gross. but once I stopped showering everyday and switched to every 2 days I haven't had eczema in 2 years. I think over showering dries out my skin, nothing wrong with not doing so everyday

@heman it's the soap. Water is most of the time fine by its own, soap tends to dry out your skin from its natural oils that moisturize it. So if you really have to take a bath twice a day or more, skip the soap.

People feel like if they did it, they'd feel gross. So they assume that's how you feel and that you're fine with it, or that you really do have BO and you don't notice it or something. I think it's ridiculous. Not every body or skin type reacts the same way. We need to celebrate the differences and dynamism of the body, not judge someone for their body being really good at regulating itself! People who have known you a long time find out and are offended. They've never noticed an issue or thought you looked or smelled weird or bad, but now you're "less than," because your routine is different. I say, enjoy the extra time (I save 138 hours a year by washing my hair about every three days after training my hair for a few years) and using less water and hope they get some sense and save their offense for things that actually deserve it.

And if that was the case, then a couple of times a year. Like before weddings, christmas and other festivities. But it really wasn't seen as a too important things to do and people often shared baths making the water less than nice. They had no nice fancy showers back then with hot water. So to get a nice hot bath you needed to do a lot of work. The fancier people used a lot of perfumes instead of washing. :P

Instead of to taking a shower every day, a dermatologist explained that you should only apply soap in specific points (like under your arms and on your feet, choose what becomes smelly when you sweat) and avoid using very hot water. This removes smelly bacteria and keep the natural layer of protection on most of your body.

You should shower depending on climate, to put it simply. I've been to Baguio and Manila, so I have a good grasp of how the climate and the amount of pollution in the environment determines how frequently you take a shower. Filipinos tend to take baths at least twice a day, given the tropical climate we're in. I usually do it once a day and skip shower at the weekends(I stay at home so no need). During summer, it reaches up to thrice to five times a day(most of them are water-only showers).

  • @IndigoEyePhotography

Exactly why I don't go near foreign tourists, especially those who are known to live in temperate regions. They start smelling real BAD once they sweat a lot in a hot summer day(esp. those who took a bath twice a week) . Experienced it once on a beach vacation, I'm afraid they'll take offence if I noted their body odor, so I just walk far away from their odor radius. It's understandable when the weather's dry and cold that showers will do more harm than good towards the body. As long as the temperature is fine, you do you. But if the climate is working against your usual showering frequency, I highly suggest that you adapt.

Also washing your hair everyday is awful for your hair. If you have oily hair (like me) try using a dry shampoo like Batiste in between washes. After a while you'll notice your hair is much nicer and you scalp will thank you for it. In case you're curious I went from washing my hair everyday to twice a week. It took a long time to get it down to twice a week but I went from having an oil drenched scalp 12 hours after every shampoo to being able to go a couple days without even needing dry shampoo. Seriously- stop washing your hair everyday ❤️💛💚💙💜

  • @ChronicallyCurious

Caitlyn Jones It's weird how viscerally people react about the showering and hair washing thing! I mean... especially if they already know you and know perfectly well that you're not gross smelling or looking, they still freak when they find out you don't shower like twice a day or your hair every day. I think it's both weird and interesting. They'll have not a clue for years sometimes and then be so disturbed. I don't get it! I've trained my hair to make it about three days, but want to get to four. I almost sit on it because it's so long and I feel like it's healthier now that I wash it less. And it takes an hour to dry properly so I'm saving 138 (ish) hours a week, taking 15 minutes to wash and condition it and an hour to dry it each time. That's 5.75 DAYS a YEAR I'm saving by not doing this! I actually did the math on that a while ago, and I'm using my "hair wash time" to learn Spanish. 😅 I time my training times really carefully. I try to have the day I forgo my wash on a Sunday so my Monday morning wash will restore things back to normal. If I have a vacation coming up, or am sick and it's my wash day, I choose timing like that to try the first time or two, so even if it's horrible backlash, I can kind of play around with it. Sometimes I went 2 days and then 3 days for a few months until I could do 3 days each time. It takes trial and error. Maybe dry shampoo is super helpful for some people. Maybe it's not as great for others. People with dark hair or dry hair might have more difficulty being able to use it less. Cocoa powder is helpful as well for darker hair, and not as drying as a dry shampoo spray especially. It takes a little finagling. But it might really be worth it. So... people can't tell. My hair is actually doing better overall now that I'm washing it less... it impacts no one negatively... I gain extra time in my day and routine.... I can't imagine why people react the way they do. It's like a gut reaction, a visceral, "That's not okay!" Reaction. It's like they found out I kiss my brother or something, it's like appalled and almost offended and weirded out all at once. I think people assume you can go from washing it every day to just not doing it every four days. I know a few people that had scalp lacerations or were really sick who didn't for a few days and they had major backlash, so maybe they subconsciously assume it's like that for everyone? So we must be choosing to be absolute grease-ball messes for days, because we prefer it. But they're forgetting everyone doesn't have the same experiences and people and their skin and their hair don't all react the same way. We're different. Celebrate the variety in the human body! It's cool and dynamic! Even if they need to shower every day because they have excessive body odor if they don't and they're being courteous, even if they feel like they have to do their hair every day, just don't act like other people who don't are less than, and everyone can just live their own lives and save their shock and offense for things that deserve them.

I literally wash my hair maybe once a month unless something happens to my hair. If my scalp smells which happens sometimes in the summer, I'll use dry shampoo. Otherwise the longer I go between washes the better and more manageable my hair gets. Last time I washed my hair is literally a week ago because I just dyed it. It's so soft and glossy right now. Way better than the greaseball I was when I was washing every day thinking that would "fix it".

Whenever I hear someone say how they shower every day (or sometimes mad, like twice a day), I can't help but think how bad it is for the skin and for those it doesn't dry the skin of, it can exacerbate oiliness in some people's skin as it tries to correct the removal of oil. If people must shower every day, mild water, not crazy hot water and it won't be as drying.

You can also soap only dirty and sweaty places like feet, groin, and armpits daily, while washing all the body with water, and give yourself a thorough all-over scrubbing every 2-4 days, depending on how dirty you get (I assume you wash your hands much more often during the day). I think that it doesn't matter much of you miss one shower occasionally (like once a week), but you sweat every day, can't avoid it, and it smells even on the day you sweat, and twice as bad the next day. Spare people with sensitive noses, just wash daily. But for the sake of your skin don't rub it raw all the time, let it live its life.

I wasn't sweating at all due to the weather (winter) and not really being able to exert myself. I just used deodorant and put my hair up and literally no one knew any different - even my mother didn't notice (and she would definitely say something if she noticed). But I usually shower about once a month during winter anyway - it's always so dry that showering more than that causes all kinds of dry skin problems. In summer, it really depends on how hot it is/how active I am. Last summer I was pretty active, so I was showering about every day or so (it was also pretty humid out too).

rabbits take a long time to dry off and their small bodies are hard to keep warm while wet, so a wet rabbit can easily get hypothermia. rabbits also have sensitive respiratory systems and water entering their ears or nose can lead to infections. rabbits can also go into shock and die fairly easily so it's best to avoid stressing a rabbit out whenever possible. rabbits self clean even more than cats do. if your bunny got into something yucky, it's best to carefully spot clean the area. if your rabbit has fleas, take them to the vet so they can offer you safe ways to get rid of them. if your rabbit ever gets wet for whatever reason, use a blow dryer on "warm" setting (not hot!) until they're dry while being careful not to let your bunny get too hot or too cold. bunnies are very sensitive to temperature.

I have a theory called Exponential theory. The reason some people need to shower every day and others can get by with showering every 4 days, is because bacteria multiplies exponentially. People who shower every day self-reinforce the causality by weakening their immune system and natural oils, causing them to grow bacteria faster and faster, making them shower more and more frequently every day in order to keep up with the last time they showered.

  • @adelarsen9776

    @adelarsen9776

@@earthenscience Yes. When you don't put chemicals on your skin and you stop showering you have an initial stink from the first wave of bacteria. Then the good bacteria start to grow and they completely wipe out the bad bacteria. After awhile you don't need to show at all as long as you stay generally clean from your environment.

Well, you kind of have to shower every day at least in summers when you're living in a place where every day you get 100+ degrees of heat outside and just sitting down in the shade eating your ice cream makes your whole body sweat. But yeah, I guess if you don't do very much exercise or any at all in certain days or regularly, you can just shower once every couple days.

And I know that it depends but what does a randomised control trial say about benefits and drawbacks of various showering intervals?

Glad I found your comment and I agree with you. Unfortunately most people are smell blind and don't know how to properly wash either. And then there's the ones that bathe in smelly water. People use febreze instead of properly cleaning sometimes so it's always possible that one's own hygiene escapes them. That being said the points are mute no matter what and people just roll with what they think. And even then have no idea what they are really doing with the products or substances they think are best for them.

I would like for SciShow to do a vid on those of us with forms of aquagenic pruritus... I've had it for about 8 years now. Makes showering often extremely painful. I used to aim for every other day but over the years my spirit just worn down. Had one too many crying fits from the pain... So now I only wash at most twice a week. A quick shower midweek, and a long bath on the weekend though baths still cause the itching pain, just usually not as severely as showers. Sometimes I skip showers and such if I can get away with it or I'm just not up for the pain, just do a quick wash at the sink (even that hurts slightly sometimes, though).

Ive wondered this lately and glad to see a vid about it. Its a well known fact that washing your hair less results in it being less oily. Because oil/sebum is a supply and demand thing. Every time you wash your hair/skin you are stripping it of oils therefor your body replenishes them. I trained my hair to wash it once a week and it hardly gets oily anymore and I started to wonder if the rest of my body would react the same. I bathe every few days and overall I have found that I sweat a lot less than I used to, break out a lot less, and don't need to apply lotion as much as I used to (which was obsessively when i bathed daily). I think if you have really dry skin like I do, it can be worth it to skip a shower every other day for your general skin condition
