Eline wants to get people to do what she wants. It doesn't seem to work in her normal clothes - but what about when she puts on an official looking uniform?

Oh is it? But fear of what? If an authority has no power, and it hasn't when nobody obeys them, then what are they afraid of?

@teflontelefon authorities don't enact any consequences because they have no power. It's us who do this to us as we give them that power through our obedience.

the human mind likes to take short cuts. when have strong associations through experience that someone wearing hi-vis dressed in a professional manner, would more likely be just that and so in our mind it makes more sense to listen because we assume they know something we don't. someone dressed in everyday clothes give us a different impression and so we are likely to have less experience and therefore assumptions that they would be giving such orders and so we are more likely to question the instruction because it is out of the norm. Out the moment i am sure anyone who listened to the orders would then probably thinking about it more deeply and rationally and if it happened again probably not listen because we have experience now that it wasn't necessary. just in the moment our minds are being lazy and thinking professional = listen vs actually trying to think why we should listen

If I was your significant other I'd obey you to the max, You are the one that is in total control. Everyday, I'd come home from work and the 1 st thing I do, is give you my phone...don't want any distractions, then I'd everything you want done, which must be done to your satisfaction. I'd do whatever you tell me to do with no back talk or arguing. On the weekends, I'd do what you want me to do, Before I have my "Free time" ....IF you allow me to have free time!
I dont think it's obedience, so much as instant confusion....being busy & not wanting to get into a conflict in the CASE the person works for the town/Govt, etc.

Precisely. Everyone is overthinking it. We're all civilized people who just want to go about our day without causing trouble for ourselves or others - it's not appropriate to take this as evidence that we're blindly obedient.
@gilgamesh310

@realrururu It's the same thing. It doesn't matter the reason for it. Just that it happens. It's important to realise because totalitarian states can be formed as a result of people doing what they're told in order to not cause disorder. Most North Koreans are probably brainwashed into thinking they're causing disorder if they question any of the propaganda forced upon them.

The orders here were really abstract though. You guys need to understand that the people who didn't listen to the girl without the jacket were basically told the same abstract rules as the other, but only listened to the one in the jacket. That's terrifying.

I think the scary part is that without even listening to what she's saying to questionize it, ppl do what she says immediately without finish listening to the whole sentence. They move away as soon as she addresses them. I think they believe she is a construction worker & quickly move aside in case they might get hurt or are in the way for measurements. Ppl see a uniform, put 2+2 together & just do what they're being told

I love this series of social experiment. Please make more!
It’s so silly. I remember at my grocery store job I went into work with my nice black button up shirt instead of polo because I didn’t own any polos and my supervisor got mad because apparently only managers were allowed to look nice. I explained to him that I needed my first paycheck before I could go out and buy a polo because I was honestly just that broke. The nice black button up shirt I had was one I’ve had before I went broke. But it’s silly how the ones at the bottom aren’t allowed to look nice just because of their status in the hierarchy.

It seems people like to dominate or feel superior or that they like to differentiate from "lower" hierarchy, i think people like to feel better about themselves to stand out, even if it means elbowing themselves forward or walk over dead bodies to have it better than the rest. You know i was watching an "old planet of the apes" clip, where they all wear costumes, interestingly enough, even though all of them were humans, the chimpanzees sat with the chimpanzees, gorillas with gorillas, orangutan with each other etc at the cantina for lunch. They had still subconciusly divided themselves into groups, and had identified so much with their roles. I see this at workplace too, ppl only intermixing with similar role, background, etc. The smokers with smokers Complainers with complainers lol

@@UniqueGeekFreakmaybe it's feelings of being inferior themselves that makes them put others down like that. If they gave themselves validation they wouldn't need to be seeking it via putting others down ultimately being destructive for no useful reason

@@The_Questionaut well said, yes it seems that, insecurity & rivalry also plays a part, ppl thinking they will take over your territory even though you haven't made any advances, just ppl's fears & they try to hinder you from succeeding, to be ahead of you. These ppl don't understand that there's enough for everyone, but they just want everything for themselves
I find this fascinating yet not surprising.
The study she was talking about is a case study I did in psychology and what is was, was there two roles; a student (actor) and a teacher (not an actor) the student had to memorize a list of words and of they got it wrong in any way they were electrocuted and the voltage went up every level as well as the difficulty level of the list of words and what they found is that at the end, 60% of people will kill someone simply because they are told to.

This isn't so stupid if you grew up into normal clothes. For example, I worked at a call center for some time, and at some point the floor Walkers and leads were instructed to wear neon guard jackets for recognition. I've paid attention, have you?
@scottyj6226
2 жыл бұрын
That's messed up, even for a call center. I think another thing that's similar to the jackets are the fancy titles they give themselves. For example when the title "plant manager," is replaced with something like "chief personell director." In fact one of my uncles said they started doing that at his workplace place so the welders started calling themselves metal fusion experts/technicians. Its sad how a tiny little bit of authority can go to someone's head. Don't even get me started on the face mask Nazi's.

If you searc about The “Unabomber” philosophy, you will understand that although we think we are free and we make our own decisions, a şot of the times we follow the directives of other people or society unconciously.
This is ridiculous, of course people would assume that since she's wearing that, the orders she's giving out must be connected to road works and some such. People would naturally think someone whose job it is to take care of these things has a good reason to be telling them to do it. Since the dictionary definition of "obedience" is "submission to the restraint or command of authority", of course people would do that 'cause they assume she's an authority.
I might go and get me a vis jacket LOL😃 How sad that made the difference! wow....🙄

Based on history and authoritarian (culture/traditions), people have conformed to the ways a public role model deems proper and correct. It is also up for discussion if individuals are starting to rely on the government too much and therefore don't partake in civil education. Can someone link a resource for the state that upholds rules? Statues and policies are different because they are not government and state regulated

someone with actual authority
where is the surprise? People (probably mostly in a hurry) listen to persons who seem to have authority and dont listen to People who probably dont have. I would also listen to a authority just because it is a Person who has (instead of a private Person) the right to give orders. if i am in a hurry and it is not an order with big disadvantages to me, I avoid any discussion and just obey not thinking much about the sense of the order.
I'm the person that would stare at her then carry on doing what I was doing

This experiment is stupid. Nobody really obeyed you. They probably did what you asked them to do because they thought there might be some danger or other unpleasant things and that you meant well. Obedience would be if you asked them to do some pushups or other things that are pure orders without any relevance to the current situation.
