Ugh that really bothered me a lot

One problem, upbeat girls on a bed while down beat girls at a table. To be truly scientific both groups would assess the videos in the same environment. Being sat at a table can make you more analytical while being sat on a bed can make you less analytical or less critical. To properly assess this there needs to be a larger base for the study and equal surroundings for both with the character of the man being the only variable.

While clearly this is not a completely empirical experiment, the purpose of this show is just to give a layman's representation of existing scientific literature in psychology. By all means take this dumbed down and scripted tv show with a pinch of salt, but understand that this is a real phenomenon that already has much support among the scientific community.

Alex Pugh Pretty much this. There were plenty of other problems that would make this something you wouldn't want to cite in an actual scientific paper besides those already listed. How the questions were worded differently, no true objective measurement of the responses, no accounting for the fact the girls were tested in groups and the many social and group effects that could come from this. But it's still a good entry level introduction to psychological concepts that have already been proven in legitimate studies. The study they made was mainly just for the visuals of the show.

This isn't a controlled experiment. The upbeat group sat closely on a bed like they were pals at a slumber party. The downbeat group sat like strangers around a table like they're colleagues at a business mtg.

I wonder if we manipulate the races of the girls and the guys would get the same results. White girls watching a middle eastern guy talking. Asian girls watching a black guy talking. Black girls watching a mexican guy talking. Middle eastern girls watching asian guy talking. mix it up and see what kind of results we get.

sherlock tango Just to give you insight, this does NOT only happen in country with white as the majority. In my country, Indonesia, one of the third world country (if you will), where white people are almost inexistant, probably half of all of the celebrities and models are mixed with white people or pure white people. The other half? Almost all of the rest, resemble white people in a way, like A LOT! White skin, wide eye, high cheekbones, narrow-high bridged nose, thin lips, etc. Even when they're local, they look caucasian, and to be exact, white people. The one that isn't resemble white people are just comedian, stupid TV Show presenter, or singer who really not emphasize it on look. I keep wondering if it's the human nature to find white people to be generally more attractive than the rest. I mean, there is that one "golden ratio" that kind of decide the beauty in human, and white (or caucasian in general) are the one that fit the model the most. With that feature, plus white, clear skin, colorful eyes and hair, you get such an enormously gorgeous feature that everybody's envy of. Even white people don't get bored with staring at people from their own race to the point where they're wary about marrying people from other race.

Why did they create such a loaded experement? It was clearly set up to only have one possible outcome, The group with happy Dan were taken to a comfortable environment with the word love written in it, as well as being asked the question in a positive tone. meanwhile the girls with sad Dan were taken into a room with upright chairs and a plain table which is a much more somber looking room. This would have created a much different impression on each group and therefore would change the outcomes.

That is such a good observation - I would have never thought of it. For an experiment to be fair you have to have exactly the same conditions only changing one component (in this case his tone of voice) so I agree with you on that.

So choose and arrange carefully your surroundings, environment for instance a nice bar, hotel lobby, office space etc. to positively impress ladies, men or prospects/clients

This wasn't even a real experiment, just a fake one to reaffirm an existing idea.

+Lelouch Actually there was a real experiment/study where they videotaped a teacher giving a lecture, and they did two videos like this, a video where the teacher answer questions and give the lecture in a cold way, another video where the teacher engage with students and be more "Friendly", and at the end of the study participants rated the teacher in the second video more positively just like the girls did here. And the interesting part is that when the participant were told they only judged the teacher positively or negatively because of the halo effect and such stuffs, they denied, which means that this all happens on an unconscious level.

This effect you speak of could only be contributed to the discussion. But the mood was negative vs positive already while the video was playing.

Is it only me or in the second video it actually appeared darker, unlike the first video that was brighter. I mean people normally (not always) see black as a "negative" color and yellow as a "happy/positive" color. It would have been better if they kept this variable the same.

Why were they seated so differently though? I'm sure that making the first group sit in a cozy bed and the other in a more formal looking sitting orientation must have made some kind of subconscious difference as well.

Be a good listener. Don’t show to them that you know a lot of things, you just to be real and stop being boastful simply because women do not like that. If you're looking for a high quality intellect woman, be sure to remember that. That's not the only thing though. These girls were primed differently on top of the way he spoke. Outside influences change your opinion on people as well. One group sat on a comfy bed among other things. and the other at an uncomfortable table among other things.

I disagree with the findings of your experiment. Tone and body language can drastically change the meaning of words (think clever joke vs tactless remark) so even though he's "saying the same thing," the message conveyed is actually quite different; in the end, he's not really saying the same thing. I guess I am saying I enjoyed the introduction to the video and agreed with the premise behind it, but I do not feel that your experiment actually tests what you claim to be testing for.

This was more of a corollary than an introduction to a new concept, secondly this "experiment" was ineptly conducted. They should have isolated each subject and interviewed them individually, instead they allowed the others to coerce their opinions and subjected them to _confirmation bias,_ showing profligacy in how they went about this.

The Halo Effect is a part of our everyday judgment. We tend to be blinded by a positive aspect of a person's characteristic verses being more aware of the negative. Honestly, I feel that the Halo Effect influences the lasting of poor relationships. Instead of getting out of the relationship, we end of staying because of that one quality that we find attractive.

It's really interesting how much of an influence first impressions have on us, and how much a simple change in tone of our voice can actually change the judgments others have about us.

The Hale Effect really makes me think about first impressions and how I may have made some bad first impressions to some people because of my mood at the time, but also how I have based others off of their impressions. The next time I meet someone or hear someone speak, I will try and focus more on the words and not their manner.

LostSerenity I thought she seemed like a psychology student or something. Most into to Psyc classes talk about this sort of stuff. In my university psychology students were usually excluded from social psychology studies because knowing about priming/halo effect etc can deminish the bias.

Our brains like consistency. It’s strenuous to try to consolidate conflicting information. And we don’t like feeling that we were wrong. We highlight the things that confirm our existing opinion, and filter out the things that invalidate them. It’s hard to admit our mistakes, so we end up repeating a lot of them. We are all kind of stupid sometimes.

Group conformity played a huge role in the outcome of the experiment. Your thoughts, feelings, and especially opinions are more likely to change based on the environment and people you're around

+David Duncan I have to disagree with you on that one. Most people is where I disagree. From my understanding 50% of the population is introverted of both men and women. Also we're attracted to the opposite personality. There's a great book written on the subject called "Introvert Power" it explains where confidence comes from in the introverted population. So its mainly about how the two personalities complete each other but one is not more ideal from the other...

I also noticed the lighting on the positive video had more light and the negative one was darker.

There were three things I saw that I feel drastically impacted the results of this study. For one, each group sat at completely different areas - the upbeat group being at a more informal and comfy area, and the negative group being seated at a more formal seated area. If one signifies warmth, comfort and friendliness (think: four girls laughing and having fun on a bed) and the other signifies formality and seriousness, the interpretation of this video can easily be misrepresented purely because the tone of the room. Then there is the fact that the lighting was different as well; the bedroom being held with soft warm-toned lighting situated at the sides and sunlight peeking through whilst the dining table having predominantly piercing lights situated right above their faces. This also affects the tone of the room and the perceived warmth his demeanor, that in turn affects the results in the women's final decision. Lastly, there is the factor that they are all situated in groups in the first place that affects influences of conformity and group influence. A lot of the girls were nodding or shaking heads in unison, pointing out aspects and automatically receiving a head nod in agreement. It is very likely that both groups were influenced by the other women, and therefore deterred their results from being accurate and unbiased.

It's really important to carry a positive vibe in order for someone to like you because no matter how smart and good looking you are if you act arrogantly in front of people, no one would ever like you or even reach out to you.

It amazes me how something as slight as the inflection or tone in what someone is saying can change one's entire perspective. I would like to see this experiment done slightly different, though. I think it would be interesting to have several different actors, each with their own script recorded in two different tones, then shown at random to several different potential dates who are alone (not in a group setting) to see what their choices would be. I also would think it would be intriguing to do this with people of different sexual orientations (heterosexual men, heterosexual women, bi, gay, lesbian, trans, etc.).

I was already familiar withthe importance of first impressions, but this video helped exhibit how extensive that impression really is. I found it interesting that even after the group of girls who saw the down-beat video first were told that Charlie was intentionally speaking in that manner they still held on to the opinions they had formed of him from watching the first video.

This is a great example of how we tend to cast judgement on others. It also shows that one's tone and body language determines the way others recieve their message.

Well, this WAS about confidence though. That's how they saw it. Also the script had a couple of sarcastic lines which would seem just arrogant without smiling.

I also believe that the Halo Effect can influence peoples judgements and perceptions when pertaining to their environment, in this case, the bed or the table.

I've known many people (myself included) that have been affected by the halo effect. It's interesting to see it played out in an experiment though. It's much more difficult to realize that there are negative qualities about a person whenever you aren't on the outside of the situation looking in.

Personality and hygiene are whats important for me. No point being with someone that has dirty nails, smelly feet, low sense of humor and conflicting interests. Appearance can be changed, one can look formal, casual, lazy, sexy or cute just by how they style their hair and dress their self. Appearance is still important, we all want someone that looks appealing to us, whether that be their body size, height, voice, eyes or face, we all want to lie in bed with someone who turns us on. But there is no point living with someone who is shit hot and great in bed, if they cant be practical around the house or have a negative outlook to life.

but then at the same time i'm kind of hypocritical or I feel hypocritical because I'm rarely if ever attracted to anyone. I know physical attraction is an obvious necessity to dating someone else, but we all know it isn't everything and shouldn't be the determining factor or reason you date someone.

How fat do you have to be for smell to be a priority in mate selection?

I think the reason one detail can turn us off from a person is because maybe we've seen that trait before in a person who didn't treat us well. How we socialize is really influenced by our past experiences and ingrained beliefs.

I agree that the way people perceive your tone of voice and actions projects their attitudes towards you.

It's not all about the Halo Effect it's also about how what he says is being percieved. In the happy video, he says things on a funny tone thus making negative opinion seem like jokes instead of what he truly believes. This doesn't happen on the sad video because he's much more serious in this one. The halo effect takes place in the second part of the video, not in the first one.

Did anyone notice that the upbeat guys video had bright light and sunshine in his video while the downbeat video had the light off? Interesting... They should do a video about how certain backgrounds/lighting may change their view on someone.

I have fallen victim and have been the one using the halo effect. I never knew there was a name for it but now that I do and they have explained it I can see now why it is so important. Not even for dating but for job interviews, meeting new people, making friends, talking with your partner or your parents, etc. Also how you might say something and mean it a certain way but how you said it will be interpreted differently by others so you have to be careful about how you deliver the message. Especially over text messages, it is the worst. You don't know how that person is saying it or meaning it especially when you cant see their facial expressions either, so you jump to conclusions.

So a warm, cheery and outgoing personality is more attractive than a depressed body language? how revelatory. Great 'science'.

I was impressed by how the guy reading the 2 scripts was able to keep the difference subtle. It's not easy to stay within realistic boundaries when you're asked to be positive and negative on once topic.

The peer pressure comment from @JoMama123451234 is true. Especially with groups of women, social validation is extremely important. As a single guy i've been in many situations where only 1 girl of a group says something negative and suddenly the whole group doesn't like you. And at the same time I've been in situations where i tried to talk to a girl in a club and they were super bitchy or didn't even look at me when i talked, then i walk down the road to get a kebap store where the cashier gives randomly gives me a cumpliment and say im hot, the same girls walk into the kebap store and they all suddenly seem to agree that i am hot because i am some sort of celebrity in the Kebap store and everybody loves me there. The psycology of attraction is very interesting.

Wow, that is sooo interesting! I already realised how important body language/personality... and all that is in a person but I never really deeply thought about it as the halo effect. It just shows that you don't really know a person :)

the probe samples aren't alike. They apparently haven't taken into consideration ethnicity, personality etc. not to mention that they all abide the rules of conformity.

There is something so unromantic, clinical and robotic about British accents.

I bet if the girls themselves weren't so damn upbeat they would like the less positive guy. I have the tendency to not trust overly energetic happy people, they feel phony. I also listen to the actual words coming from others mouths, so both sounded like assholes. The happier one seemed even worse because he was smirking and making what he was saying into a joke.

They talked about the halo effect with the two different videos by the way he set his tone of voice and actions but if you pay close attention to the videos, it is also the tone of lighting they used for each video. The first video was upbeat with good lighting verses the second video that wasn’t upbeat and the background was dark.

After watching this video, it makes me question how often I am affected by the halo effect, especially when meeting knew people. Often, I have had great first impressions with people, and it has clouded my judgement on the rest of their behavior.

This video kind of shows of how attitude plays an important part of how you see someone and influences if you like them

Very interesting. I find the whole concept of body language and how we seemed to be perceived and how it affects us really interesting. Especially when it comes to dating and what not.

This video could also help with job or school interviews, just saying.

Different people can have different opinions on the same thing. That video doesn't prove the Halo effect... Even the same person can have different opinions about the same thing in different times.

It goes to show that saying about only 10% of what we say is coming out of our mouths- is so true. It's worrying though that this means we will be temporary blinded by "halo effect". The question is, will we remember to think twice?

Human's judgement can be easily influenced. The fact that you made the upbeat group watch the video on a bed and the others on table chairs is a big mistake, it can affect their judgement. For example, just the fact of holding a hot beverage vs a cold beverage in your hand changes your percetion of the coldness/warmth of the peson you're speaking to in terms of personality.

not really. with the upbeat video, one girl said she liked him but wouldn't date him. the others just said they liked him, never saying they wouldn't date him. the downbeat one had 3 girls say they wouldn't date him and one saying she might "give him a chance", which doesn't mean much

This vidoe makes you realize how accepting we are to peoples tone or voice or body language. what may seem good for us is not actually good for us because we are only looking at one quality that is appealing and it is clouding or jugdment about how we precieve that person. this is very interesting because this is something that one does not think of.

How it all started...What is it that attracts us to others? & What do others find attractive about us? Pressure of conforming to something we should expect to hear or want to hear blinds us. As soon as we meet someone we tend to make a conclusion of them and subconsciously say if we like them or not. But unfortunately our judgment could be wrong. The Halo Effect which is shown in this experiment helps us realize that a person's tone of voice and facial and body expressions can make us agree to what they are saying or not. Which are the kind of things we should pay more attention to when we are in a relationship, talking with friends or anyone as an everyday thing.
