I think when a stranger gets too close you think they want something or they are trying to rob you. That causes anxiety since you have to constantly evaluate their behavior with the chance that it's harmless as well. It becomes awkward not knowing what to do.

Humans are fascinating. There is a reason we use the word ”invading” personal space. In addition to being uncomfortable, it’s also ways to intimidate people. So much non-verbal stuff happening there. Also interesting that being on the spectrum limits your ability to interpret those behaviors.

Strangers invade my personal space all the time, the intimate kind, I usually quickly double check my valuables and place them on my other side away from them. After that I do not worry unless I see them itching themselves or sneezing/coughing. Or if they pick their nose, I want to get away from there. Otherwise, I usually say hello and make conversation when they invade my space. Their penance. I eat an awful lot of garlic.

I just had an engineer come to my flat the other day to fix the boiler, I was trying to show him where the heaters were and he was too close to me in my personal space I had to get something out the way in front of the heater but I couldn't he was that close I would had to touch him. Then I tried opening the door for him to let him out and again he was right behind me he didn't even move back and give me space to open the door properly. It was very strange because I've had many engineers at my flat they have never done this. I don't understand why he did that it was very uncomfortable.

Really? Because that 4th one "family and romantic relationships" is pretty much the space my good friends are in. If we didn't get in that space, how would I even be able to hug them? However the other spaces are bigger in my case. I think I'm a bit more black and white - good friends, very close, touching, hugging.. Others, don't touch me at all, stay at a distance.

I wanted this group of people I used to know to leave me alone for years and they didn't and kept coming near me, and the scary part was that they had people convinced and treating me like it was me who wasn't leaving them alone. The one person would hack me and then repeat some things I said online before I could and then people just assumed that if I repeated my opinions online that I was copying them or that I saw it because I was stalking them, even if I had only found them by accident. They'd also add in things I never said, too, so people ended up thinking I was saying awful things even when I wasn't. When I would try to explain it wasn't me people wouldn't care or believe me, and I got relentlessly bullied over it all for years, with a large number of people telling me to kill myself and sexually harassing me to my face, telling me I deserved it. All of the people abusing me were them and people they told, even if they weren't people I ever knew on a personal basis. People had also been telling me they'd hurt me and others but those threats stopped years ago, and they instead just tried passing off they were good people since people didn't believe they did it in the first place. It makes me angry when they change facts and lie about what they did, and when they brag about themselves in ways that either aren't true or that were compliments they took from me to spite me. I ended up having a mental break down because being spited, mocked, followed/stalked, harassed, sexually harassed, and bullied for years, had a huge toll on my mental health. Also the people who stalked me stalked me online as well as in person, and they knew it was me since they moved here just to follow me, and they live in my same city. Despite lying about where they live and their age and what they look like, and other creepy shit, like if their parents are alive or not, and that they had ADHD when they don't, and that they're shy when they're not. They also have a tendency of being so highly manipulative that they actually fake actions just to make themselves look how they want to others. All hidden behind calm soft-spoken tones. They also liked to say "if at all" a lot. They like to gas light me and hide to others what they did by repeating things so people don't know the accurate time of events. Police also help them to cover up the severe crimes they committed and I've been stalked and harassed for years by police, too. I wanted to be left alone and I didn't get that. I wanted my privacy and I didn't get that. The one person has finally after years left me alone, but others have not.

Terrible examples. Way too exaggerated. In the real world people have small differences in personal space needs so you can be too close or too far without knowing it. You usually are. This is like teaching people not to burn pizza by shooting a flamethrower into the oven. No subtlety or understanding of how complicated this is.
