Kissing is pretty much essential foreplay.

Sure, it's kinda the same thing. However, most people enjoy kissing, so there's a 'reward' to distract from the disgust. Just drinking somebody's saliva isn't really very 'rewarding' (unless that's your kink), so there's nothing to distract from the disgust. For balance, it would've been nice to see those who responded negatively to the offer of kissing. I bet there were some.
