silicones are not good because it is fake moisture and it's basically plastic. It acts like a moisturizer for a short period of time because it coats the hair in a plastic type film and keeps real moisture from coming in, therefore over time your hair gets dry. but sulfates are fine because its clarifying but should only be used once a month because it has harsh chemicals that dry out the hair.

Sulfates are necessary for ALL hair types. You need to clarify your hair at least oncw a month. Strip the hair all the way clean and using oils, hydrating masks etc to maintain a balance. Using sulfates gets rid of build-up which can actually cause a tonne of problems. Using sulfates is actually helps keep your hair healthy. You just gotta maintain a balance

Agree I can't live without it. Hair feels heavy and kinda dirty too plus I know for sure without sulfate my hair gonna look dead. Balance the sulfate with moisturize hairmask or conditioner. If you lazy like me and don't want to have to many products, trust me shampoo with sulfate and moisturizer conditioner plus hairmask is already GREAT.

There is nothing wrong with silicones. Your hair does not need to breathe or whatever. The film that silicones form on your hair is why silicones are beneficial. Of course it’s all about formulation and not all products are the same but simply saying that silicones are bad is misinformation.

Not everyone wants 'locks' or at least, not all the time. Different styling techniques produce different curl types. Sometimes the aim is definition and at others it may be volume or length.

please do research and try things for yourself y’all. all the ingredients they said are bad for curly hair actually really help my curly hair. find your own process, try what people recommend but don’t just take what they say as truth. there’s just no scientific evidence that these ingredients are bad for ALL curly hair (or evidence they cause dryness or other issues)

Sulfates and silicones are safe and necessary even for the kinkiest of hair types. This myth that they should be avoided at all cost was started by the woman who created the curly girl method in the 90s. Silicones are necessary for making your hair more manageable if your hair is bleached. Sulfates help clean the scalp and if you’re going to be using a lot of product you need to be clarifying once a week with a clarifying shampoo. Those ingredients may not be as helpful for extremely healthy hair, but most people have very damaged hair.

Misinformation. I'd recommend watching videos from Lab Muffin Beauty Science about why all of these ingredients are perfectly fine. Parabens get unnecessary hate despite being a very useful category of preservatives that have a low rate of allergenicity. Often products that are "paraben free" actually have MORE preservatives becase parabens are really good at their job. Silicones are especially helpful for those with coarse, dry, or frizzy hair; all issues that those with culry hair deal with. Silicones help your hair retain moisture. Sulfates are super good surfactants that are only really a problem if you're allergic/sensitive. I'm sensitive to SLS in toothpaste, but not in haircare products.
